FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 interaces allow you to connect

another hard drive, a DVDRW writer or a digital video cam-

era directly to the LaCie d2 Quadra (this connection is called

    daisy-chaining).

To daisy-chain devices, you must be using the same interace

(FireWire). Your computer will not recognize the daisy-chained

device i the interaces are mixed, i.e. a FireWire device at-

tached to a drive that is connected to the computer via the

    Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interace.

TeCHNICAl NOTe: When you daisy-chain using a mix o

interaces (FireWire 400 and FireWire 800) the resultant speed

will be limited to the lowest common denominator (FireWire

    400 speeds).

Connect your LaCie d2 Quadras power supply and host

computer interace by ollowing the steps in sections 2.1 to

    2.3.

To attach a digita vido caa*:

4-pin end o the cable to the 4-pin port on your digital

    camera.

Connect the 6-pin end o the iLink/DV cable to the 6-pinFireWire port on the back o the LaCie Hard drive (C).

    To attach a iWi iha:

Connect the FireWire 400 or 800 cable into an available

FireWire 400 or 800 port on your FireWire peripheral.

Attach the other end o the FireWire 400 or 800 cable to

an available FireWire 400 or 800 port on the LaCie d2

    3. Optional Formatting and Partitioning

The rst time you use your LaCie hard disk, LaCie Setup Assis-tant ormats your drive according to your needs. I your needs

change, you can reormat your LaCie Hard Disk to optimize it

or use with Windows or Mac, or or cross-platorm use. For

example, i you used LaCie Setup Assistant to ormat your drive

to work with your Mac (HFS+), but now you want to share

your hard disk with Windows users, you can reormat it to

FAT 32 (MS-DOS) or this purpose.

You may need to ormat your LaCie hard disk i LaCie Setup

Assistant was interrupted or stopped. I the hard disk does not

appear in My Computer (Windows) or on the desktop (Mac), it

    may not be ormatted properly.

What is Formatting? When a disk is ormatted, the ollowing things occur: the op-

erating system erases all o the bookkeeping inormation on

the disk, tests the disk to make sure that all o the sectors are

reliable, marks bad sectors (i.e., those that are scratched) and

creates internal address tables that it later uses to locate inor-

mation. A hard disk must be ormatted beore it can be used

    to store data.

    What is Partitioning?

You can also divide the hard disk into sections, called parti-tions. A partition is a section o the hard disks storage capacity

that is created to contain les and data. For instance, you could

create three partitions on your drive: one partition or your o-

ce documents, one as a backup and one or your multimedia

les. Or, i you will be sharing the drive with another person in

your household or oce, you can create a partition or each

person who uses the drive. Partitioning is optional.

ImpOrTANT INO: pas coy th Us manua

and utiitis to you cout bo oatting.

Reormatting will erase everything rom the hard disk. I you

have other data that you want to protect or continue to use,

copy this inormation to your computer beore reormatting.

File System FormatsThere are three dierent le system ormat categories:

NTFS, FAT 32 (MS-DOS), and Mac OS Extended (HFS+).

Use the inormation below to determine which ormat is

    best or you.

    Use NTFS i

...you will be using the drive only with Windows 2000,

Windows XP or Windows Vista (perormance will generally

be greater when compared to FAT 32). This le system is

compatible in read only mode with Mac OS X 10.3 and

    higher.

    Use HFS+ i

...you will be using the drive on Macs only; perormancewill generally be greater when compared to FAT 32. This

le system is NOT compatible with Windows OS.

    Use FAT 32 (MS-DOS) i

...you will be using your drive with both Windows and Mac

OS X 10.3 or sharing the drive between Windows 2000

and Windows XP or Windows Vista. Maximum single le

    size is 4GB.
