Dear Huegel Families,What a great start to the 2014-15 school year! It was wonderful to see each of our returning students, and also to welcome many new students. I feel very grateful to be a part of such an amazing community of staff, students, families and community partners. Our teachers are very happy to be back at school, as you can see in this Happy video (http://goo.gl/Y7tDT4) we showed students on the first day!
We kicked off our new school year by taking time to review our Huegel expectations, which are to be safe, respectful and respon-sible. We practiced what being safe, respectful and responsible looks like in all areas of our school, including the hallways, cafete-ria, playground, bathroom and classroom. On Friday, September 19 we celebrated learning our expectations by wearing hats and sunglasses to school!
We work hard to maintain the Huegel expectations because we know that our best learning happens when they are in place. Our teachers are committed to meeting the learning needs of each student, and we hold high expectations for our students and our-selves. We are excited to continue to use technology to support teaching and learning at Huegel. You can read more about our journey as a Group 1 Technology School throughout this newslet-ter. Our first All Family Forum on October 14 will also focus on the Technology Plan and how Huegel is incorporating technology into our daily habits.

2 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
continued from A MESSAGE FROM MS. POTTER-DAVIS
You have probably heard from your child about some of the changes we have put in place this year. After con-sulting research about lunch and recess we decided to have students go outside for recess first and come in to eat lunch second. Our recess supervisors are engaging students in several structured play opportunities, includ-ing Sharks and Minnows, soccer, flag football and a walking club. Students can also play freely with their friends. We have anecdotally noticed that students are eating more of their lunch because they are not rushing to get outside; I am curious what parents are noticing too! Our teachers in the older grades are also bringing their classes back to their classroom for lunch, which has allowed for more community building time. You might have also noticed that students are invited to come in to school around 8:15 rather than waiting outside for the 8:25 bell. They can pick up breakfast if they choose and go right to their classroom. While the school day still starts officially at 8:30, we wanted students to start their day on a positive, calm note. So far so good!
Finally, I look forward to continue connecting with our most important partner—parents! We have many ways to stay connected, including monthly PTO meetings; quarterly All Family Forums; our Huegel Eagle Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/huegel.eagles) and website (https://huegel.madison.k12.wi.us/); monthly newsletters; multiple family events, such as Open House on October 7 and the Fall Festival on October 24; and November Parent-Teacher Conferences. My hope is that all families feel welcome at Huegel anytime. The teachers and I are always available by phone or email to answer any questions, and you are always wel-come to stop into the office for a visit.
I hope to see everyone at Open House and the Fall Family Forum!
Warmly,
Abby Potter-Davis, Huegel [email protected]

TECH PLANLast May the district invited schools to apply
to be a Group Technology 1 school and serve
as a model for how technology will drive
great teaching and learning as defined in
the Information and Technology Plan 2014-19.
Huegel’s proposal was accepted and we are
excited to use the 2014-15 school year to plan
for the technology that will be put in the hands
of our students in the fall of 2015. The plan is for
each 2nd through 5th grade student to have their
own device to support their learning; there will be
one device for every two Kindergarten and 1st
grade students. The technology in our classrooms
will also be upgraded this year. Our staff is very
excited to take on this challenge and our goal this
year is to think about how to weave technology
into our daily habits. We are also looking forward
to connecting with our Huegel families around
the use of technology. The focus of our October
14 All Family Forum is technology, and we also
encourage you to watch our Huegel website for
updates throughout the year.

PTO CORNER BY: JENNIFER SEEKER CONROY, PTO PRESIDENT
Welcome back to school! It is so nice to be back to the
community and routine of the school year. Huegel is truly a
special place with creative students, engaged families, and
energetic staff members. We are all lucky to be a part of it, and
we have the opportunity to make Huegel even better for our
kids and community!
The PTO is a non-profit group that organizes special events
throughout the year and raises money for expenses not covered
by other funding, such as special teacher requests or after-
school clubs. Anyone who is passionate about our school is
encouraged to take part! You can support the PTO as little or
as much as you want or are able to with opportunities from
chairing an event, to being a board member, to handing out
pizza, to simply attending a PTO meeting and hearing more
from Principal Abby Potter- Davis.
This is an exciting time for Huegel as we prepare to be at
the forefront of the Madison Metropolitan School District’s
technology plan. We hope to see many families at the Fall Family Forum on October 14th at 6:00 to discuss
what the tech plan means for us and our kids. We’ll hear from
the district’s head of IT as well as tech teachers at Huegel. This
will be a great time to ask questions and share ideas about
technology in education. Dinner will be provided or you can
bring your own if you prefer. Child care will also be available. Be
sure to RSVP to
Our next regular PTO meeting is Tuesday, November 11th, at
6:00 p.m. in the library. Pizza and child care will be available and
meeting business begins at 6:15 p.m.

6 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
HUEGEL PBS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT SYSTEM DAILY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: This acknowledgement is based on students earning Huegel
Tickets for demonstrating school-wide expectations. All staff
will carry tickets with them and hand out to students who are
“caught” following the expected behaviors.
WEEKLY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Each week, students will have an opportunity to “trade in”
their tickets in their classroom. Students can save or bank
their tickets for a higher priced item. However, before the
monthly school wide Gathering all tickets will be turned in and
included in the monthly drawing.
MONTHLY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:
Classes that have successfully been taught the current Cool
Tool, gone down as a class to the PBS Showcase and signed
the completion bulletin board, can attend the all-school
celebrations monthly throughout the year to recognize the
hard work of all students. We will have monthly drawings for
prizes at our school wide Gatherings.
QUARTERLY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:
This system recognizes students who are meeting
their academic and behavioral goals. Academic
Acknowledgments are recognized 3 times a year and
Behavior Acknowledgements are recognized 4 times a year.
Stars are posted for each student and acknowledgements
are displayed as stickers added to their stars. The stickers
are something to work for, as an extrinsic motivator as well as
acknowledgement for students. Also, a list of students who
have earned their stickers will be included in a PowerPoint at
the Community Gathering as well as on the school scrolling
monitor in the main office. There will be a celebration at the
end of the year for all students who have earned at least 6
stickers.
RESPONSIBLE. RESPECTFUL. SAFE.

increase safety, decrease
problem behavior, and
establish a positive school
climate.
