April 2011

Dear Galloway Family,

THANK YOU for all the support and encouragement during the sermon series on Twisting the Truth. At times it is rather uncomfortable identifying the lies of the devil because we’ve so bought into the lies. As I identified truth twisting and lies, folks have not been offended they have thanked me for clarifying that which had confused them.

THANK YOU also for the support and encouragement during the Celebrating Generosity sermon series. I am honored to pastor a church that has generosity as one of its distinctive characteristics. I continue to celebrate God’s generosity and your generosity. As we allow God’s provision to flow through us, we are privileged to see lives being transformed by Jesus Christ.

In April, I am inviting you to join Jesus as He went “Up To Jerusalem.” We’ll start in the Old Testament and see the Ark of the Covenant being taken to Jerusalem. Then we’ll travel with Jesus up to Jerusalem. In doing so, our understanding of the salvation of God will be enhanced and hopefully experienced. Then, we’ll be ready to “CELEBRATE” on Easter.

PLEASE KEEP PRAYING FOR ME as I lead, preach, and teach you. As the Apostle Paul asked for prayers, so do I.

Pray for me that whenever I open my mouth words may be given so that I will fearlessly make known the mys-tery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador.

Pray that I may declare the gospel fearlessly as I should.

Pray that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored.

Pray that I may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith.

Pray that truth would be confirmed in my life. Truth that says the Lord is faithful that he will strengthen and protect me from evil.

Pray that I would have confidence that I am where God wants me to be and doing what He wants me to do.

Pray the Lord would continue to direct me in God’s love and Christ’s perseverance so I would never give up on what God is doing in me (or in you!). Ephesians 6:19-20, II Thessalonians 3:1-5

I am pleased with the prayerful deliberations of the Strategic Planning Team and Ministry Council, and their reviewing of the Healthy Church Assessment and setting of the 2011-2012 Galloway Goals. Copies of the 16 characteristics defining Galloway’s health quotient are available at the church office. If you want to provide input to our Ministry Council Chairperson, Shane McCoy, about these goals and possible action steps we could be taking, you can e-mail him at [email protected] or me at [email protected]; please let us know.

THANK-YOU for hosting the Josh McDowell event. Your hospitality was exceptional. THANK-YOU to the 30+ who helped out and the 50+ who attended. The sponsors of the day were the WPA Conference of the United Methodist Church Work Areas on Evangelism. They were very appreciative for all your efforts.

With you in serving Christ,John Seth, Pastor

Memorize - Personalize

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition,

with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends

all understanding, will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus.

News from the FaMILy ResouRce centeRStory Time is back, and has moved to Monday! If you are a Mom with a child newborn through age 6, you are invited to Story Time! We will now be meeting the first Monday of each month at 10AM is the Family Resource Room. This is a great opportunity for Moms to relax, visit, and enjoy coffee, tea and pastries! It is also fun to watch your children enjoy great stories, a fun activity, and time to play together. The Family Resource Room has large doors open into a nursery. This is especially nice for our little ones that are shy, and just feel better knowing that Mommy is close by. The Moms sit and visit in the comfy Family Resource Room couch and chairs, while the children are read to and play in the adjoining nursery area, and the babies spend most of their time crawling in between!

Monday May 2 - “Let’s go on a Mommy Date” by Karen Kingsbury

If you are interested in attending, please contact Johanna McCoy at 437-2597 or [email protected].

Galloway has been blessed with the amazing opportunity to host 15 of the children from Danita’s Children’s Orphanage for a concert on Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30PM. These children are children that we have supported these past few years. They have had the opportunity to come to America for a nine month tour through an organization called “His Little Feet”. This energetic, culturally unique, Gospel centered performance brings attention to the plight of millions of orphaned and vulnerable children living in the world today. Words cannot express how delighted I am that my church family will have the opportunity to meet these children that are so near and dear to my heart. I pray you will clear your calendar for this evening.

Series: Up to JerusalemJesus turned his face toward Jerusalem and led his disciples “up to Jerusalem.”

Let’s follow along and see what God has for us to learn and experience.

April 3 - The Ark of the Covenant - On it’s way up to Jerusalem God expects us to know His Word and follow it. The Ark brings blessings. David asked for instructions and followed them. We are the Levites who minister to God. (15:2) We are the temple filled with the glory of the Lord.

April 10 - Jesus on His Way Up to Jerusalem The disciples were astonished, the crowds were fearful for their lives and for Jesus. Yet, they (we) follow. Jesus took the disciples aside and told them what would happen. Jesus wants us prepared for what is to happen. Confused, yet they followed. Do we have to know everything? What’s enough for you? A blind man cries for mercy. He knew all he needed to know. Jesus was on his way but he took time for one in need (He’ll do the same for you), he heard him. The man had no sight, but he had faith. Do you?

April 17 - Jesus Enters Jerusalem – Palm/Passion Sunday Weaving together the whole story from the Gospels, we’ll look at: The plan of God unfold. The crowd greet the King. Jesus weeping ... for they did not know what would bring them peace. Who? Jesus! Whose house? His house, a house of prayer. People healed, children shouting ... now that’s church. The reason Jesus came ... for the Father’s glory ... to drive out the prince of darkness. April 21 - Maundy Thrusday @ 7PM We will share in the fellowship hall “Christ is the Passover” - see page 7.

April 22 - Good Friday We will participate in the Community Cross walks, breakfasts and Community Services (see page 1 for full details). The Chapel will be open from 6AM to 8PM that you may sit and meditate on the suffering, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ. Appropriate music will be playing softly and reading on the passion of Christ will be available.

April 24 - Tired of Empty Promises – Easter Join us at Galloway on Easter Sunday at 8:15AM and 10:45AM as we celebrate CHRIST IS RISEN! The Empty Cross … The first Easter promise – “your sins are forgiven.” The Empty Tomb … The second Easter promise – “the hope of eternal life.” The Empty Burial Clothes … The third Easter promise – “Jesus is alive and wants to fellowship with you.”

Christ in the PassoverMaundy Thursday, April 21st at 7PM

Exodus 12:13-14 1 Corinthians 5:7-8“Then they are to take some of the blood “Get rid of the old yeast that you may beand put it on the sides and tops of the a new batch without yeast - as youdoor frames of the houses where they really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, eat the lambs. That same night they are has been sacrificed. Therefore let usto eat the meat roasted over the fire, keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, along with bitter herbs, and bread made the yeast of malice and wickedness, butwithout yeast.” with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.”

Before I, Pastor Seth, share “Christ in the Passover” on Maundy Thursday, I want to briefly answer why we, believers in Jesus, are celebrating a Jewish holiday – Passover.

For me, there are several reasons:

God chose to reveal himself through a People – Israel, and through His Son Jesus, who was Jewish. •Scripture says: “Salvation is from the Jews.” - Genesis 12:1-3, John 4:22

God promised that through Abraham He would bless all nations, and through the nation of •Israel would come the Messiah.

Scripture says all things that happened to Israel were an example for us. 1 Corinthians 10:11•

Revealed in the Passover is the Salvation Story: Man’s Sinfulness and God’s Willingness to Forgive.•

We are told • “For indeed Christ, our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast …” 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

It was at Jesus’ last Passover that He instructed believers to keep the Lord’s Supper, in remembrance •of His sacrificial death on the Cross.

I want to help you see that The Jewish Passover of today still points to Y’shua, the Hebrew way to say Jesus, as the Messiah. Y’shua, Jesus and Joshua are all the same word, meaning Salvation, Jehovah saves. We come together as individual families and as a Galloway family to remember “Jesus saves!”

RESERVATIONS NEEDED: “Christ is the Passover” will not be a full meal but you will be eating and drinking and experiencing a Jewish Seder. As in a good Jewish family, you’ll be assigned your seat with your family. There will be tables of six and eight.

RESERVATIONS will be taken on April 4 and 11. We will reserve some seats for last minute guests. A donation basket will cover the cost of the meal and over and above giving will support the Pittsburgh Project and Dominican Republic Mission trips.

Youth Ministry Visioning Forum April 16th, 9AM to 2PM

When most people read this, these may well be their first two thoughts.

9AM-2PM? That’s a long day. I’m not going.1.What’s a visioning forum?2.

I want to try and help ease these thoughts and help you all to understand what this “Visioning Forum” is. I have been here a little over a year now and have been able to get a good picture of where the Youth Ministry is and where we are headed (if we remain as we are). It has become very clear to me that we need a clear underlying structure for the youth ministry that will help to build a sustainable ministry that provides a meaningful impact for the students. That is why we are having a Visioning Forum to begin to establish the underlying structure of the ministry together as a collective group of parents, volunteers, leadership, and those with a heart for the youth.

Now to cover the thoughts from above.

I’m not going to lie and say that this isn’t a long time to commit to something of this sort, and I am not naïve 1.enough to believe that this won’t impact anybody’s decision to attend the forum. I do think, however, if we truly desire to see a ministry that thrives, for the sake of our teens, then we need to make the commitment and work this stuff out, and yes, it is a commitment. I also understand that people have things they need to do. I so very much would like as many people to work together on this as possible. The input of many is needed in this process. If you cannot attend the whole time, come for some, and for those who are sticking around, we will provide meals and plenty of breaks to help you stay connected and processing together. For those who already received an invi-tation, note that the time has been changed from 9-4 to 9-2.

A visioning forum is a strategic planning meeting for the Youth Ministry where we will be working to hash out 2.the structural elements needed in the ministry. These things include the purpose statement of the ministry, the mission, the values of the ministry, and some tangible 3-year goals for the ministry. The forum will be a chance for brainstorming on these things, and a chance for people’s voices to be heard for the direction of the ministry. We often enjoy talking about what’s wrong with any number of things. We even like to go as far as to offer solutions to any number of said problems, but we just as often do not step forward to have an active role in creating the change needed to move out of the things that we are usually so adamant to complain about. This is our chance to really move forward as a ministry and to help settle the frustration that we have with the current way in which the youth ministry functions.

We will be meeting to begin to work these things out, and I hope to see anyone who feels they can offer something to the discussion there.

“Who is needed to attend?” you may ask.

Anyone who has a heart for the youth is invited. (This does not commit you to being an active member of the ministry on a regular basis, it just allows you to have your thoughts heard).

Anyone involved in Youth and Church leadership is needed.

Parents of not only youth, but of the children’s ministries are needed as well.

Please make every effort to attend.

CONNECT – Wednesday NightsIn February we began a series that is designed to help students have a greater relationship with God by showing them the character of God as revealed through scripture, tracing His redemptive plan for mankind throughout the Old Testament. We do this by using a discipline within Christian Theology known as Biblical Theology. Biblical Theology traces themes and events throughout the entirety of the Bible to form a “Big Picture” of the given them or event. Through this, you are able to see that there is such a thing as a theology of clothing or a theology of food. There are things we are able to trace through scripture, and come to a more Godly understanding of, that we wouldn’t normally associate with our Christian lives.

We are using the same process to trace God’s Story throughout the Old Testament to reveal his character, particularly through His redemptive plan for us. We have already looked at this throughout the book of Genesis with Adam, Abra-ham, Jacob, and Joseph. We are going to be continuing this series for the remainder of the school year, touching on the major “characters” within God’s story, and revealing more about who He is.

GROW – Sunday MorningsOn Sunday Mornings we have two classes for students.

Confirmation – In Confirmation class we have been discussing who God is through the major doctrines of Theology Proper, Christology, and Pneumatology. In other words, we have just completed talking about the trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. After we discussed these aspects of God, we discussed what worship is, and even closed the class that day with a short time of musical worship with the rest of the youth classes.

Jr. High/Sr. High – The Jr. and Sr. High-ers are combined and are now discussing the topic of purity along with their teacher Susan Scott.

What is Focus on the Family’sIn a recent study, the Bama Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview.

Because of this, today’s believers live very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy and we begin to wonder what life’s ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation.

To counter this slide within the body of Christ, we are launching one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry – Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project.

The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 12 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This home study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each les-son discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.

We believe this one project represents the possibility for exponential change within the body of Christ, as we expect that thousands will be transformed by this curriculum. As it has been throughout history, God continues to call ordinary people to make an eternal difference in our world.

We invite you to be a part of this cultural change by participating in a Truth Project Leader Training Seminar. Training will be April 9th at the Community Alliance Church in Butler. Register online at www.pafamily.org or call 717-545-0600 or 1-800-FAMILY-1.

Attend the training conference and receive The Truth Project DVD set, which includes all 12 professionally produced lessons on seven DVDs. If you are willing to lead a full Truth Project Group, Galloway Church will reimburse your registration cost.

Giving Generously, Changing LivesThe body of Christ. What does that mean? Pastor Seth asked me if I would be interested in cheer leading generous giving. Highlighting Galloways’ missions and the monies invested in this area. At first I was a little reluctant then I said yes how hard could it be to go down the list of missionaries, Christmas offerings and the like and just say the numbers. Then God stepped in.

God hit me with “it’s not about the money, it’s about how lives have been changed for the good.” So we say we are the body of Christ. Hands that serve like the clothing ministry, angel food, handihelpers, Pittsburgh project, UM women, outflow projects. His feet for who goes. The Bells, Julynda Nulph, Hannah McCarthy, the Kurtichs, the Williams and Kayla Simons. His heart: ABC Pregnancy Center, Mega sports camp, Barrow civic theater-American cancer society. The little ones. Danita’s Orphanage, MOPs, Crisis Center in Oil City, compassion international and many more that you all support here at Galloway.

I could of just went down the list and told you all how much money every one has received and where the monies are going but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Look at the Bells how their faith and trust has grown in God. When they were preparing for Mexico and didn’t have the money how God was faithful. How they were not sure what God had in store for them and they just stepped out and again God provided friends, family and support.

How a local elderly women was about to lose her insurance on her home and in turn lose her house because of out dated electricity. You helped provide funding for the parts and a company offered free labor.

How Kenneth from ROTOM continues to do great things in Uganda with very little. How the elderly are learning the Bible. How they are getting the necessary basics to just live like clean water and food. How they are so grateful for those who come and just visit.

I can go on about the clothing ministry. How it has helped many locals with clothing and at times with prayer. How the majority helping on a Wednesday night seems to be people who don’t even go to church but has committed to helping others.

How monies to Community Services are helping people we have no idea who they are. People who are in need.

Body of Christ, I stand before you because my family is a testimony of your generous giving. When I started to go to Galloway in 1998 it wasn’t long before Kara said we need to start tithing. I was like tithe on what. We don’t have anything left. The Lord asks us to give of the first fruits not the left overs. So, we began $10 here maybe $20 then as we grew so did the giving. In early 2002 our 5 month old daughter passed away. Tragedy hit the Hawkes household. We lost a young one and how will we pay for the $10,000 funeral expenses. That was the wrong question. We couldn’t. The body of Christ could though. Through the help of this body, all expenses were paid. Before I started to come to church I always heard that the church was after your money and I believed it. You know it has some truth though because Jesus says where ever your treasures are your heart will be. So, if your money is your treasure and your heart is there why wouldn’t the body of Christ be interested in it, not for the treasure but for your heart which is the treasure. We started to fill out commitment cards for tithing and before long I put on one card that I would like to tithe 25% of our gross. Never thinking anyone would read it. Then Pastor Dave read it. He came to me one day and said how he was proud to have read the card and he gave some encouraging words and went on. We have not reached 25% we have committed to yet. We are a work in progress. I say this not to brag but because of you. The body of Christ who helped us in need and when you sent Kara and Desi to Haiti and their life has been changed for all eternity for the good. Because of your generous giving, my children can someday say they never knew a day without knowing our God and Savior Jesus Christ. I truly believe that there are many families sitting here today that can say the same thing and we all will be eternity grateful and who knows. Maybe one day in heaven some one we meet may say thank you for your giving. Continue body of Christ to be faithful because surely I say our Lord is faithful.

-Shannon Hawke

Dear Friends at Galloway,

It was nice to visit you last fall.

I thank you for the wonderful hospi-tality accorded to me, my wife and ROTOM board members during our visit to Galloway .

At the beginning of 2005, we ac-quired two acres of land to build the ROTOM Centre. The goal was to have a “home” for ROTOM and a place where sick grannies could come for medical treatment, hospice ser-vices and other support services.

With your support and other part-ners we are making progress towards achieving this goal..

In 2006 the first building was put on the ROTOM ground. The 14x28 ft building housed our office, a store, and a home for Augustine (senior) till June 2009. It has since been turned into a small guest apartment

In January 2007 with the help of a mis-sion team from Bread of Life Church in Uvalde TX, we built the foundation for the health center. Shortly after, we real-ized the need to adjust our design to achieve optimum land use. As a result we suspended work till June 07 when a team from Engineering Ministries International (eMI) Canada helped us develop a com-prehensive master plan for ROTOM Centre.

In October 07 with the help of a mission team from Galloway work resumed with construction of the ROTOM Administra-tion Block. Galloway building as is named was completed in 2009 and is being used by our staff. It houses the offices of the Executive Director, Programs & Out-reach Departments, plus Finance & all Administration offices. In addition, it also has a Board Room and much needed Re-source Centre.

My focus now is to complete the health center phase 1. The foundation is ready and some money has been secured for bricks and sand for the walls. Our desire is to complete it in 2011-2012

I urgently need prayers, financial support and volunteers to complete. We still need to do:

Walls and roofing.

Internal wall finishes

Doors and windows

Exterior finish and landscaping

Furniture and partitioning.

Floor finishes

Electricity and plumbing etc

eMi engineers have estimated the remaining works to cost US$ 128,091

I am so glad and thankful that Galloway UMC can contribute towards the com-pletion of Health Center (pictured above). Thank you. Kenneth M Neh.2;2

Youth Dominican Mission TripThe Sweetheart Dinner was a great success and we were able to raise $1,800.00 for the Dominican Republic Mission Project. Thank you to all who participated. This was a great opportunity for the youth to serve and bless the congregation that is sending them to the mission field.

Speaking of the mission field, we will be leaving on July 6th to go to Sousa, Dominican Republic to serve with a United Methodist Volunteer in Mission team. There are 25 going, which includes youth, children and adults. Our mission will consist of a building project (to be determined late in April). The project will be done at the Bishop’s house and church. We will also be having Bible School for the local church and com-munity. Finally, we will have the opportunity to visit the local community in their homes. All of this is such a great opportunity for the youth to serve in another country and experience their culture.

You will hear more and more about events concern-ing the mission. We are selling sub sandwiches every month, will be selling candy (think of Easter baskets to be filled), flowers for Spring planting season and a yard sale on April 30th. As you begin your spring cleaning please keep in mind any items you would like to do-nate to missions that we could sell at the yard sale.

We so appreciate the church and their generosity and support of missions. We could not go without your prayers and support. Thank you! The Youth Dominican Republic Mission Team & Sweetheart Dinner Laborers

Some of our youth hanging out at the Winter Fun REACH Event held in January.

Spring is just around the corner and so is spring clean-ing. We’re having a church yard sale on Saturday, April 30th and are asking that, as you clean your way through your home and garage, you be on the look out for earthly treasures that you would be willing to give up to bless our mission team to the Dominican Republic.

We are in need of nice household items, furniture, knick-knacks, anything for which people would be willing to pay. We will be accepting clothing, but it will go down to the Free 4 All, so all clothing will be free for the yard sale. We cannot accept donations until the day after Easter and the rest of the week before the sale. So, let’s get busy cleaning and praying for a generous heart.

THEME:

Moses, David, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Mary mother of Jesus, Paul … just some of the Biblical characters undone by an unexpected encounter with God that left them humbled, surrendered and transformed. That’s the heart behind the theme of Aldersgate 2011: Suddenly Undone.

It is our prayer that we would encounter God and in humility, offer ourselves fully to His purposes fulfilling our God-given destiny. Come, be empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry on the ministry of Jesus. Come, be suddenly undone and forever transformer.
