    President Greg Hipple

We have had spring-like weather teasing us in the Midwest this past week. Howev-er, with the return to reality with winter conditions, spring calving has begun at Sutliff Belties. I have raised cattle all my life, or at least

since getting my first feeder calves when I was in the 6th grade, yet I still find the start of calving season exciting and full of anxiety. How will the first time heifers do? Will there be any abnormal presentations? Can I save them all and fi-nally have a 100% calf crop? I like to think I have learned from my past mistakes and I am becoming wiser. But agri-culture and raising cattle have a way of bringing me back to reality in a hurry. There is little doubt that I will not become wealthy raising cattle and farming, but I certainly feel rich at certain times of the year. Calving season is definitely one of those times.

We are finalizing the plans for our trip to Fryeburg, Maine for the National Belted Galloway Sale and the Spring Coun-cil Meeting that is held there every three years. The members of the New England Galloway Group that have extended their hospitality to this Iowa farm boy and his wife(who have never been to New England) have been most humbling to us. I have often wondered if breeders of other breeds of cattle are as kind and compassionate to their fellow breeders as I have experienced during my privileged opportunity to serve as a member of Council and as an officer. I am confident in stating that with very few exceptions, you are members of one of the finest cattle breed associations in existence. To those members of the committees that have been hard at work in debate, doing research, or preparing reports and rec-ommendations for the Spring Council meeting, please accept our sincere appreciation for your service. Together, we can make things better for all of us and our chosen breed of cat-tle. Welcome to spring!

News from Napa, California Stewart Ranch, Napa, California recently showed their heifer, Snapchat at MJC Cattle Classic, a club calf jackpot show in California. They showed Snapchat in a commercial class by weight. Owner Ailene Pritchett Tarap communicated that she won her class of ten heifers with judge Miles Toenyes of Illinois com-menting, "This is by far the best Belted Galloway I have ever seen." The next day Toenyes posted about the heifer on Insta-gram. Snapchat was also shown at their local fair and was judged by Ryan Rash of Texas. He awarded her Champion Heifer and stated, "This heifer is the Queen of the Nile and Snapchat wor-thy!" Ailene told us, Belties can compete against these other breeds. It just takes that special one!
