The Galloway Society and the Belted Galloway Society of
the United Kingdom and Eire are delighted to invite you to the
2016 Galloway World Congress August 5-10, 2016, in the
ancestral homeland of all Galloway breeds of cattle—Scotland
and the North of England!
There will be something for everyone--excellent cattle, tradi-
tional tartan and castles, spectacular scenery, shopping, and
delicious local food. The Congress will consist of official busi-
ness meeting, the popular county show at Dumfries, three days
of farm tours, and a night at the world-famous Edinburgh Tat-
too. This will be an excellent opportunity to view some of the
very best Galloways in the country and to experience Scotland
and the North of England’s finest.
Gretna Hall Hotel, www.gretnahallhotel.com, located in the
famous border town of Gretna Green, will provide accommoda-
tions for the five-night stay. The oldest part of the hotel was built
in 1710 and it is surrounded by 10 acres of beautiful gardens.
Gretna Hall Hotel is very historical but has the facilities of a lead-
ing contemporary hotel. The Gretna Green village is steeped in
history that dates back to the 1700s when young couples from
England were known to run away to Scotland to take advantage of
different marriage laws. You may repeat history and get married
“over the Blacksmith’s Anvil” or possibly renew your own mar-
riage vows.
Gretna Green and Gretna are both famous for shop-
ping. There are many traditional and high street stores within
walking distance of the hotel. For tartan, there is the famous
Blacksmith Shop, where you can buy anything from kilts to
cashmere, or bronze statues to crystal. The Gretna Gateway
Outlet Village is in Gretna and there are a variety of stores that
include classic and contemporary clothing plus homewares.

Look for a complete itinerary in the Events Calendar on bel-
tie.org including all information needed for booking the con-
ference and the hotel. The conference is £280 per person. Ho-
tel rates are £70 for a two-person room and £45 for a single-
person room at the Gretna Green Hotel. (The exchange rate of
one British pound equals $1.53 US.)
Jon and Sylvia Bednarski of Kentucky have coordinated an
email list to provide those who are interested in attending with
the most up-to-date information. The Bednarskis are consult-
ing with travel agents to see if it is possible to coordinate
flights for regional groups to travel together. They will update
the email group, if it is possible. Currently, airfares are around
$1200-1500 (US) per person for flights to Scotland. Contact

Regional Organizations
Vice President Greg Hipple
Over the past few months, I have been
engaged in some discussions involving regional Belted
Galloway groups versus the Belted Galloway Society, as
well as conversations on social media. The focus of the
discussions and questions is in regard to which
organization should a breeder join, or which
organization is necessary. I’d like to delve into this topic.
The Belted Galloway Society is the “national”
organization. In order to record, transfer, or register an
animal, annual membership is required.
Your membership has these additional benefits:
Listed under the Breeder’s Directory on the Society’s
redesigned website;
all mailings and published promotional materials
related to Belted Galloway cattle;
assistance of the Executive Director;
the ability to use all of the resources of the Society,
including classified listings;
voting privileges, which means eligible to vote for
members of Council or any other business properly
brought up for consideration;
the ability to have members of your family apply for
promotional funding;
the opportunity to apply for all three of our
educational scholarships through the Belted Galloway
Foundation.
Regional groups across the United States are the New
England Galloway Group, the Great Lakes Belted
Galloway Association, the Southwest Belted Galloway
Association, and the Western Belted Galloway
Association. Membership in these groups is voluntary,
but so very important. Nobody works harder to promote
the Belted Galloway breed than these regional groups. A
perfect example of hard work and success was held in
Tipton, Iowa where the Great Lakes Belted Galloway
Association held the Belties Unlimited Show on June 13,
2015. Forty-eight head of cattle, shown by 17 exhibitors
from seven states, gathered for a fun day that
exemplified the cooperative spirit between a regional
and national organization.
These are exciting times to be involved in the cattle
industry. Please take a moment to reflect on your
successes and goals. From those of us who serve you as
officers and Council members, we do so with pride and
dignity. We are always striving to better our breed’s
image within the beef industry, while we constantly
search for new ideas to help you--our members and
breeders of Belted Galloway cattle. Please take time to
let any member of the Council know your thoughts and
feelings on the issues we face. If you do not tell us, we
will not know. Let your voice be heard.
If you are not currently a member of a regional group,
please consider joining and supporting one or more of
our dedicated regional organizations. They are the grass
roots effort of localized promotion of the breed! The
benefits of membership in your region are values you
cannot put a price on. Thanks to belonging and
participating within these organizations, Pat and I have
met some of our closest friends and have strengthened
family relationships.

The first Northeast Regional Junior National was organized
by Diane Gushee (ME) on the same weekend as the Fryeburg
Youth Show and National Belted Galloway Show. Congratu-
lations on a very successful event! Several contests were held.
Photo Contest
Three divisions of photography—either black and white, or
colored were judged. The subject was anything involving
cattle—farm life with cattle, cattle alone, or people with cat-
tle. Sophia Romani (RI) won overall with her winter scene.
Sophia was also awarded the inaugural Keely Walsh Award.
The award was established to commemorate Keely Walsh
(ME) who died tragically in an auto accident during 2014.
Keely Walsh was know for positive focus on life and her
leadership qualities. The award honors a person who exempli-
fies those qualities. Congratulations to all the winners!
Speech Contest
Juniors who pre-
pared a speech related
to the Belted Galloway
and the beef industry
were asked to bring
one illustration or vis-
ual aid. In the junior
and intermediate divi-
sion the speech was to be no more than three to five minutes.
In the senior division the speech had to be no more than six to
eight minutes. The judges also asked questions relating to the
individual speeches. Ellie Pendleton (ME), PJ Clair (ME),
Abby Caron (ME), Autumn Clair (ME) all were winners in
their divisions.
Cook-off Contest
Teams of three or four members were supplied with two
pounds of Beltie hamburger to incorporate into their dish.
Teams were asked to provide their own recipe, cooking sup-
plies, plus the recipe must accompany a starch and vegetable
for their presentation. Teams were allowed one hour to pre-
pare and cook their meals from start to finish and they were
given 10 minutes for an oral presentation of their dish. Teams
were judged on safety of preparation and cooking, teamwork,
taste, originality, display and presentation.

Team Marketing
The team marketing competition was very popular! Age divi-
sions, comprised of three individuals on a team, were respon-
sible for their own marketing strategy. Their objective was to
sell their animal to the panel of judges and every member of
the team was required to speak during the ten-minute presen-
tation. The team brought their animal before the judges and
discussed pedigree, performance and visual characteristics.

New England Heifer Project
Congratulations to Julia Stanley (ME) who was selected as
the 2015 heifer recipient by the New England Galloway
Group. Julia is quite active with livestock and she has shown
a pigs, dairy cattle, and beef cattle. She is looking forward to
