February 7, 2016 5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
DEAR PARISHIONERS and VISITORS:
We begin the liturgical season of Lent on WednesdayFebruary 10 . Lent has two major purposes: it calls us to ath
deeper appreciation of our baptism promises and itemphasizes a spirit of penance. Through forty days of closerattention to God’s Word and of more fervent prayer, we aredrawn to be closer to the passion, death and resurrection ofJesus.
We think of the social consequences of sin and renew ourdesire to turn from sin and to do the good which needs to bedone. A Share Lent collection in the 5 week of Lent helpsth
us to support the work of the Canadian bishops through theDevelopment and Peace organization in developingcountries.
Some special devotions during Lent help us to broadenand deepen our prayer experience.Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Friday andWednesday in Lent after the 5:10 pm Mass, starting onFriday Feb 12.
Please ask the Holy Spirit to let you know what Godwants you to do this Lent to make it special. On your part, have some quiet time in the next few days to listen in adeeper way to the Holy Spirit speaking to you personallyabout Lent.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
All that is not of God must die.
All that is crushed will be restored.
All that is lost will be made new.
Lord God, may we repent of ways
that do not serve you
and admit to the tensions
that tell us where we need to change.
Christ is coming walking towards the cross.
May we see Him clearly
pouring out love, pouring out mercy
pouring out peace.
May we kneel before Him
in humble adoration.
May we take up our cross and follow
and walk with Christ
into the ways of life.
Amen.

a quienes tienen necesidades materiales.
o Edna.

Moments of Mercy
As Catholics we take up the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving every year. These practices help us to remember the merciful
love and compassion that God shows all people. Participating in these
practices, we journey toward repentance with our community and God and
toward the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of our Lord. We do not make
this journey alone. The whole Church prepares for the celebration and
together, along with those who are preparing to enter the Church at the
Easter Vigil, we try to live more faithfully to God's call to be merciful, loving,
and compassionate to those around us. Our acts of love through sacrifice
and prayer are a tangible witness of God's love to those around us. 1) Spend
some time in reflection about why you choose to participate in the prayer,
fasting, and almsgiving of the Church during this Lenten season. Next time
someone asks you why you aren't eating the chicken on Friday in the
lunchroom, you'll be better prepared to share your belief in God who is
merciful and compassionate. 2) Share with someone what your Lenten
practices will be this year. This is not to brag about how good you are at
following Christ, rather, it allows us to each have something of an
"accountability partner" so that we can strive to be a more credible witness
to our faith. USCCB Moments of Mercy
