2. Con la medalla se puede obtener indulgencia plenaria La medalla, como se le conoce ahora, es la del jubileo de 1880 por los 1400 años del nacimiento del santo. Fue lanzada exclu-sivamente por el superior abad de la famosa abadía benedictina de Monte Cassino en Italia.Con ella se puede obtener la in-dulgencia plenaria en la Fiesta de San Benito, que la Iglesia celebra el 11 de julio, siguiendo las condiciones habituales que manda la Iglesia: confesión sacramental, comunión eucarística y oración por las intenciones del Papa. 3. Cuando San Benito hacía la señal de la cruz obtenía una especial protección divina Cierta vez quisieron envenenar a San Benito. El santo, como era su costumbre, hizo el signo de la cruz sobre el vaso y el ob-jeto se partio en pedazos. En otra ocasión, un pájaro negro empezó a volar a su alrededor, San Benito hizo la señal de la cruz y tuvo entonces una tentación carnal en la imaginación. Cuando estaba casi vencido, ayudado por la gracia, se quitó las vesti-duras y se arrojó a un matorral de espinas y zarzas, lastimando su cuerpo. Después de ello nunca volvió a sufrir una tentación similar. 4. La medalla tiene gran poder de exorcismo La medalla de San Benito es un sacramental reconocido por la Iglesia con un gran poder de exorcismo. Los sacramentales son “signos sagrados con los que, imitando de alguna manera a los sacramentos, se expresan efectos, sobre todo espirituales, obtenidos por la intercesión de la Iglesia". El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica establece que por los sacramentales "los hom-bres se disponen a recibir el efecto principal de los sacramentos y se santifican las diversas circunstancias de la vida". 5. La medalla muestra a San Benito sosteniendo una cruz y el libro de sus reglas A ambos lados del santo dice: “Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti” (Cruz del Santo Padre Benito). Se puede ver también una copa de la cual sale una víbora y un cuervo. De manera circular aparece la oración: “Eius in óbitu nostro preséntia muniamur” (A la hora de nuestra muerte seamos protegidos por su presencia). En la parte inferior central se lee: “Ex. S. M. Cassino MDCCCLXXX” (Del Santo Monte Cassino 1880). 6. Las siglas de la medalla en el reverso y su significado C.S.P.B. "Cruz del Santo Padre Benito". C.S.S.M.L. "La santa Cruz sea mi luz" (crucero vertical de la cruz). N.D.S.M.D. "Que el dragón infernal no sea mi guía" (crucero horizontal). En círculo, comenzando arriba hacia la derecha: PAX "Paz". V.R.S. "Vade Retro Satanás". N.S.M.V. "No me aconsejes cosas vanas". S.M.Q.L. "Es malo lo que me ofreces" I.V.B. "Traga tú mismo tu veneno".
