Thank You from Food For the Poor Last weekend Fr. William Sokolowski, representing Food for the Poor, visited Holy Redeemer on behalf of Food for the Poor. Food for the Poor is the largest lay Catholic organization working to help alleviate poverty in Central America and the Caribbean. Fr. Sokolowski would like to thank parishioners for their welcome. He appreciated your thoughtfulness and support for the work of that organization. Our western hemisphere has so many people who face the unrelenting grip of poverty. Our support for the self-help projects conducted by Food for the Poor and other charitable organizations can lift them out of poverty and help them live better lives.

AUGUST 22, 2021

From the Pastor Paying it Forward I had a wonderful experience a week ago Friday. I was coming out of the Chatham Village Market. As you might remember, Fr. Sokolowski was my guest last weekend, and I went in to pick up a few items before he came to visit. I was checking out at one register when I heard a slight commotion at the one behind me. It didn’t seem serious. I exited the store and walked across the parking lot to my car. I was settling into the driver’s seat, getting ready to start my car, when a man knocked on the passenger’s side window. I thought it might be a parishioner or someone I knew wanting to say hello. He motioned for me not to drive away as he came around the front of my car. I didn’t recognize the man. He was slender, probably in his seventies, dressed in work clothes with a Chatham Fish and Lobster Company cap on his head. It was evident he wanted to speak to me, so I rolled down the window. He came to the side of the car and said, “Did you witness what went on in there?” Maybe it was his choice of the word “witness,” but I became a little alarmed. I didn’t feel I was party to anything unpleasant. I told the man, no, I didn’t feel I had seen anything out of place. He said, “Well, a young man came to one of the registers with a few items. The clerk rang them up, and when the young guy reached into his back pocket to get his wallet, his face blanched. He told the cashier his wallet was gone. He thought he might have dropped it in the parking lot. Would she wait as he went out to see? At that moment, the woman behind him in the line pushed her credit card into the reader and told him not to worry the purchase was on her.” He said the young man was dumbfounded and thanked her profusely. I quipped to the man, “So, there is a God!” As he walked back in front of my car, his face wore a beaming smile. It was nice to see how happy he was to have witnessed such an act of kindness. It had given obvious pleasure to the man’s day. The woman’s gesture of kindness not only impacted the object of her thoughtfulness, but it had an impact on all those who witnessed it. My day was more pleasant too! I felt gratified that the man was anxious to share the incident with me. I don’t know if he saw I was a priest and thought the story might be something I could use in a homily, spiritual talk, or bulletin article, but I was very impressed he took the time to tell me about it. Like the generous woman, he took the opportunity to pay it forward too. He shared his joy with a total stranger. Goodness has a beautiful ripple effect. When we pass it on, it makes our world a more pleasant place. During the pandemic, we have heard so many stories of incidents of people being unpleasant and hurtful. This summer, some service businesses have reported increasing rude and hostile behavior coming from customers and patrons. It is nice to note an instance of kindness and thoughtfulness. We have to remember the vast majority of people try to be helpful and considerate. As we enter these final weeks of our tourist season, take every opportunity to pay it forward with kindness.

Annual Collection In Full Swing During August and September, Holy Redeemer Parish conducts our Annual Collection. The Annual Collection offers parishioners an opportunity to make an extra donation to help with the works of the parish. Besides our weekly budget collection, it is our parish’s only special fundraiser. As we begin to emerge from the COVID pandemic, the parish needs to respond to our community’s spiritual and material needs. Thanks to the support of parishioners and careful spending, our 2020-2021 Fiscal Year deficit was less than $20,000. We hope a successful Annual Collection will completely erase that shortfall and put the parish on a sound financial footing for the coming year. Registered parishioners received an Annual Collection mailing at the beginning of the month. Extra pledge cards are available in the pews for those who did not receive one. The goal for this year’s Annual Collection is $62,000. Please prayerfully consider the amount of your donation to this year’s Annual Collection. Let’s all help Holy Redeemer Church respond to God’s call to help His Kingdom grow here in Chatham. As of Tuesday, 74 parish households have donated $36,812.50 to the collection.
