HOLY CHILD

Attention all 6th - 12th graders

The Youth Group is having their first 2 meetings of the season on September 13th and September 20th

from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

We are recruiting heavily right now and you do not have to be a current parishioner to join. Spread the word. We will be meeting in the rectory board room, enter through the door on the right of the garages. We will prepare for Family Fun Day, perform community service, gather ideas, partici-pate in PTAF functions, have fun movie nights and ice cream parties, as well as visiting nursing homes and soup kitchens. All great experience and service credits for school too. We also have some members that play a musical in-strument - that are in our Youth Group Band - who play at these functions. Come, get involved, and bring a friend - see you there!

(which afflicts our little parishioner, Michael Capolongo)

SEPTEMBER 13, 2015

The naming of holy child parish

By Marie Ferro

Monsignor Francis M. Brennan was sent to Staten Island to start a new parish. When he arrived, there was nothing but trees, grass and woods. He solicited the help of the neighboring parishes but they were hesitant. They were reluctant to help a newly assigned priest start a new parish in their neighbor-hood, on their territory.

So Monsignor Brennan took matters into his own hands. He went to the Eltingville train station, early in the morning, and greeted all those people commuting to New York City. He introduced himself and invited them to come and join the new parish forming on Arden Avenue and Amboy Road, The people were impressed with his enthusiasm and his determination to get a parish started.

The next step was to find a place to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The first Mass for our par-ish was outside on the grounds of the Elk’s Club on Richmond Avenue near Arthur Kill Road. The Altar was set up on the porch of the Elk’s Club, and the people sat on the grass or on lawn chairs.

Monsignor had to find a building to protect the parishioners from the elements. He decided to rent the Island Theater, on Richmond Avenue, every Sunday morning until he could build a church on Arden Avenue. The movie playing at the theater for the first Mass was, “Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf?”

Monsignor Brennan also went to the homes of parishioners and introduced himself and handed out, “The Book of Catholic Worship”, so the people had the readings and hymns when they went to Mass at the theater.

The parish was growing and the building of the church began. The Archdiocese had the name of a saint picked out for the parish but Monsignor wanted the parish to be named Holy Child because of all the children he encountered walking through the neighborhoods. He eventually convinced the Archdio-cese to select the name, “The Church of the Holy Child.” Fifty years later we are still here continuing the work of teaching and spreading the gospel that Monsignor began.
