HESWALL Police Station will remain open despite thecutbacks at Merseyside Police.

But the station will no longer have general enquiry ofce,

which is essentially a front counter.

The only two front desks to remain open in the Wirral will be

at Birkenhead and Wallasey.

Police chiefs say the decision was made to allow more

ofcers to be out on the streets, rather than being stuck

behind a desk.

Superintendent Kevin Johnson said: In all the changes

we have made we have focused on what the public tell usis important; maintaining a visible policing presence, answering your calls within our

target time and attending, both emergency and non-emergency calls, within our agreed

target time.

No police stations will close but as part of the cost savings, the number of GEOs

across the force will reduce from 34 to 12. I would like to reassure our communities that

residents in every area will continue to have access to a 24-hour police station within

their local area and another that is open from 8am until 10pm.

The Wirral Committee of the British Horse Society is conducting a survey which will

contribute to a decision on whether to open a new bridleway to bypass a busy part of

Voltage Direct Current Link cable will

bring power from Scottish wind farms

The cable would need to be laid across

part of Arrowe Park Golf Course,

potentially closing up to three holes for

nearly three months.

HESWALL PROBUSFOLLOWING another successful year, Heswall Probus held their customary AnnualWalkers and Ramblers Luncheon at the Grange Thornton Hough

The luncheon attended by some 24 Probus members followed the usual programme

in setting out the walks and rambles for the current year. A number of favourite venues

have been included together with several new locations to encourage new and regular

members.

HESWALLS Mark Sargent was among the daring swimmers who took part in the Boxing

Day Dip at West Kirby Marine Lake

The shrieks above the surf were not the usual seagulls - but madcap people braving the

wintry water for a festive dip.

Screams from the waves of fancy-dressed funsters were an accurate thermometer that

told exactly how cold the water was on Boxing Day, but it did not stop more than 80

entrants tackling the event at West Kirby.

One of the prize hampers went to Mark Sargent, from Heswall Round Table, for dressing

up in a Morph outt to enter the water in. Another went to brave dipper, Iolene Marie

Parry, entered the water in an Hawaiian outt, has raised over 650 to help the Northern

Lights charity send seriously ill children to Lapland.

Death o well-known

community fgureA PROMINENT gure within West Wirral RotaryClub had died.

Vernon Schwarz died late last year at the age

of 64 after a battle with cancer.

Vernon had a distinguished career in

secondary education, working at a number

of Wirral Schools, including Pensby Boys

School.

In 1986 Vernon was one of the founder

members of the Rotary Club of West

Wirral and was its president for the year1990-1991.

He was well known both in his local

community and in Rotary as a hands-on

contributor and champion for the needs of young people both at home and abroad.

He was Vice-chairman of governors at Meadowside School in Upton; a school for

children with complex learning difculties.

Vernon was also chairman of the Dale Farm Association. This non-prot day centre

for adults with learning difculties in Lower Heswall promotes independence through

various aspects of horticulture. Vernon was often to be found working closely with

these adults on plots producing organic vegetables, honey, perennial and beddingplants for later sale in the farm shop.

Over the last two years Vernon and his wife Jenny visited Lucknow in India to help

with Rotarys Polio Plus campaign to vaccinate millions of children under the age of

ve in one day.

Alan Swift, from the Rotary Club, of West Wirral, said: Sadly Wirral is poorer by the

passing of this outstanding member of our community.

The way we were

Heswall Golf Club

was founded in 1902,

overlooking the River

Dee on land leased from

John Baskerville Glegg.

Work began on the nine

hole course in June and

was ready for informalopening by September. The

temporary clubhouse was

part of Gayton Hall Farm

and with a membership

of almost 200, the club

was able to build a new

clubhouse next to the

temporary one in 1904. This

two storied clubhouse was

burnt down in 1924, with

total damage of 10,000.

The new clubhouse opened

in 1926.

Pilot Ofcer Pentlands

RAF bi-plane crash landed

onto Heswall Golf Course

in 1926, the River Dee

side of the railway line. His

life was saved by using a

parachute and he became

the rst British member of

the Caterpillar Club whose

membership was open

to those whose lives had

been saved by parachute.

BOOKS FOR THE NEW YEARBY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAMS BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Genera Fiction: Jamrach Menagerie: Caro birch

This magical novel begins with the encounter between eight year old

Jaffy Brown, a lad from the slums of Victorian London, and a tiger who

happens to be roaming the streets of the city. This leads to a whole

series of events which shape Jaffys life, eventually leading to his

waving goodbye to his true love Ishbel and boarding a ship bound for

the Indian Ocean. Besides the tiger we meet other animals including

a whale and a dragon; we also get to know Tim, Ishbels twin brother,

who goes through many adventures with Jaffy. Eventually they become

shipwrecked and thats when we discover who the real menagerie

are, those members of the crew who are left with them oating on the ocean in a lifeboat. Not abook for the fainthearted- the last third is pretty grisly- but it is a fantastic yarn with a beautiful and

bizarre atmosphere. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize last Sept, this is a must-read for anyone who

enjoyed Life of Pi and also a great novel for a book group.

The name of William McGregor, founder of the Football League, stands alongside those of

Ebenezer Cobb Morley (father of the Football Association) and Charles Alcock (founder of the F. A.competition) as one who belongs among the games great innovators. In this beautifully produced

little book local writer Peter Lupson (author of Thank God for Football and Across the Park) and

John Lerwill tell the story of William McGregor who, as a committed Aston Villa man and an

important ofcer of the club, became vitally concerned about the organisation of the national game

leading to his starting a movement which resulted in the creation of The Football League in 1888.

This publication came out on the 100th anniversary of William McGregors death and introduces

the reader to the character of the founder of all league football. It contains several photographs and

illustrations and there is a foreword by Kevin Moore, the Director of the National Football Museum .
