A Christmas Carol is such a fool-proof story you can’t louse it up - Leonard Maltin

HESWALL Hall has been handed over to

the community to run in future.

Wirral councillors agreed that Heswall

Hall shall be transferred to the new

Heswall Hall Community Trust under a

99 year Lease. There had been huge

concern that the council would be forced

to close Heswall Hall in order to make

cost savings.

The basis for the transfer was a

business plan put forward by the Heswall

Hall Steering Group.

In essence this means that the hall will

become viable in future if it is used often

enough by the local community.

In addition and for a limited period of up

to three years Alexander Hall will also be

transferred to the new Trust. This means

that the council won’t be involveed in

running the halls any longer.

As a result, the threat of closure has

been lifted from Heswall Hall which will

be run as a community Hall by local

people for the benet of all groups of

the local Community through the new

Community Trust. The Trust will hope

to foster a sense of belonging, and its

existence should help to play a role in

raising people’s aspirations for their own

community.

The Business Plan sets out how the

Hall begin to make money within ve

years and then become both viable and

sustainable in future years. The transfer

itself will not take place for some months

while considerable improvement work is

carried out and arrangements put in place

to run the Hall by the new Community

Trust.

In the near future meetings will be

arranged with all existing User Groups,

Community Groups and other interested

parties to explain exactly what has

been agreed. Dates of Public meetings

will also be arranged so that everyone

interested can have the opportunity to

fully understand the proposals. At all

these meetings help will be sought from

individuals willing to contribute to the

project. Dates of public meetings will be

well publicised

For further information please contact

Angus Clark of the Heswall Hall Steering

Group on 0151 342 3321 or by e-mail at

Christmas isn’t a season. It’s a feeling - Edna Ferber

With Christmas fast approaching and allthoughts turning to presents and food, Ithought I’d write a few ideas of my own1. I you are having guests to stay then maybe the sparebedroom might need a little makeover. Crisp new

bedding, a throw at the oot o the bed and a moremodern table lamp might smarten up the room2. Te new Bio Fires are greator creating a ame eatureeither indoors or outdoors, and perect or a wall with nochimney. Tey run on bioetha-nol so require no connectionto gas or electricity.3. Smarten up those dining

chairs. Many chairs have seatpads that can be removed quiteeasily. ake a length o abric,a staple gun- and voila! Ideal i your seat

pads are the original white calico and maybe looking alittle scrufy.4.My mother still changes her curtains rom sum-mer to winter, but changing cushions and adding atextured throw can also create a more cosy room overthe bleak winter months.5.ake time to wrap those presents. I love lots o

ribbon and tie into them sweets, whisky mini-atures, decorative soaps. Much nicer than just

cellotape and a label. It can make thesimplest present look like much

more thought has gone into it.Check Abakhan or great selection

o ribbon6. I you can’t put on an amazing

array o lights on the outside o your

house and drain the National Grid ,then add a simple wreath to your ront

door. Decorate with some inexpensivegold ribbon and a ew baubles.7.Scented tealights are antastic at thistime o year- pine, cranberry and theChristmas Memories. Most supermar-kets will have a good selection8.Don’t orget the bathroom- a littlebowl o baubles, some red hand tow-

BARNSTON Panthers Junior Football Club are enjoying another good season at the

top of the league.

The club have continued to grow since starting out mainly with boys attending in and

around Barnston Primary School. This year they won tournaments at Hope Farm and Moss Farm, in Northwich, which

has allowed them to recruit some of the best age group players in the Wirral to the

club.

They play on Saturdays, in Parkgate, and currently sit second in the Ellesmere Port

under 14s league.

The club is run by a team of six parents who together form the team committee

and arrange all the purchasing of kit, training, club fees and extra activities such as

tournaments through the summer and visits to ‘What’s Cooking’ etc as rewards for all

the boys’ efforts.

There is a great team spirit throughout the team which is very well supported by allparents. This season they were able to obtain sponsorship from dstele.com

AS a lifelong Everton fan, John Fowler has seen his fair

share of ups and downs over the years.

To younger readers it must seem as if the Blues havealways been a mid table team – but that hasn’t always been

the case, as John points out in his new book ‘Pops, how

come Everton won the League in ’87? ’

John, who has lived in Gayton for the past 31 years,

was actually born in Walton (that’s the district, not the

prison). He has been a fan since his Dad took him down

to Goodison Park in the early 1950s when he was about

eight years old.

Fast forward to the 1980s, and John took his own

children to Goodison where they were to witness the

glory years of Howard Kendall’s rein on Merseyside,

where the great names such as Andy Gray, Graeme

Sharp, Pat van den Hauwe,

Neville Southall, Peter Reid and

Alan Harper would become etched in the

memory.

In those years, the Blues won two titles, the FA Cup, a European

trophy and were the main challengers to their rivals across Stanley

Park.

The book attempts to explain in a humourous way how the Blues

came to win their second league title in 1987 and is a good read for anyone who

remembers that era – or for those under the age of 25 who probably can’t believe that

Everton were once champions!

John has also published two other books, “ Growing up in Liverpool before

Beatlemania” and

“The Clubman”--Tales of an Insurance Man.

The book is priced £5and published by Countyvise books. It can be obtained by

emailing John at [email protected]

Aren’t we forgeting the true meaning of Christmas? You know, the birth of Santa - Matt Groening

Fiction: February – Lisa Moore

If you’re looking for a good novel to give someone for Christmas why not try this

one?

Its main character, Helen O’Mara, was one of those left behind when her

husband died in the Ocean Ranger oil rig disaster in 1982. Her story starts years

after the event but she is compelled to travel back to the February (of the title)

that persists in her mind and to the moment, when, expecting her fourth child,

she received the call informing her that her husband has been lost at sea. 25

years later she receives another phone call from that same fourth child, a son,

to say he has made a girl pregnant and he wants his mother’s help. As son John

grapples with what it might mean to be father, Helen realises she must shake off

her decades of mourning in order to help. The novel takes us through the whole

story of her loss and how she has survived, culminating in the moment when the

oil rig goes down and Helen begins to emerge from her grief to meet a new life.

A beautiful, although at times harrowing novel, February is poignant, gently

amusing and heart warming. Highly recommended.

Autobiography: I must collect Myself- Maureen Lipman

This sparkling collection of stories, reminiscences and jokes, interspersed with

original and inventive monologues introduces us to all kinds of unforgettable

characters. There’s the excitable ‘wannabe’ auditioning in ‘Brittney’s Got Talent’,

Sheila the unintentionally smutty art tutor, the bitter American army wife suffering

in the Home Counties and many others, all illustrated with some wonderful

photographs of the author herself bringing her characters to life.

Maureen Lipman’s appeal lies in the fact that she is so normal and ordinary,

experiencing grief and happiness in the same ways that we do. Her talent is to

be able to collect those experiences and share them with us in a way which we

can recognize and identify with. A lovely warm and human book.

Local interest: Hoylake: A history of the Links- Anthony ShoneIf you have a golf enthusiast in the family this is the book for him/her, beautifully

presented in a glossy hardback. It is the story of Hoylake Golf Course, taking

us through the early years when the course was rst built (only 9 holes

initially!), through all sorts of changes and developments right

up to the present day. There is a section on

greenkeeping and ecology and an appendix on

the championships, all illustrated with stunning

colour photographs and sketches. A wonderful

book to keep and treasure.
