A. This question is asked so frequently that I have decided to give anxt nd d n r to your qu tion.

The solution to puffy eyes will depend very much on the cause of thepuf ness. If you have always had puffy eyes, this may indicate that youare genetically predisposed to having fatty deposits in this area; or, thepuf ness could be a result of ageing when the fat pads beneath the skinstart to shift altering the eye contour. In both of these instances there isr y i no cur oth r th n ith urg ry.

However, if your eyes aren’t usually puffy and you awake to nd your under eye area is swollen, this type of puf ness is relatedto in ammation. Firstly, you need to apply something toreduce the swelling. Cold compresses are a good, quick andinexpensive solution because cold causes swollen skin tocontract. Soak cotton wool pads or a piece of clean clothin cold (not icy cold) water, or apply a gel- lled eye maskfrom th r frig r tor.

Cold cucumber slices are also helpful, but they workbecause they are cool, not because they have any magicalingredient. You can also apply used, cooled tea bags,

however they need to be the caffeinated type as thec ff in tog th r ith th t nnin h p to contr ct thdistended skin. Whatever you decide to use, lightly pressthe cold compress on the puffy areas for several minutes toh p th ing ub id .

Continual puf ng up and then de ating of the delicateskin around the eyes will eventually lead to eye bags andwrinkling so it’s important to nd the cause of the puf ness.

If you wear eye makeup ensure that you are removing alltraces every night. Avoid using an oily eye makeup remover as this can often cause puf ness.

Whilst on the subject of skin care products make sure thatyou use a product speci cally designed for the delicateeye area and use the product very sparingly. A bead of eye cream about the size of a grain of rice is ample for theeye area. During the daytime it is also important that your eye cream contains a sunscreen to prevent the thin, fragileskin around the eyes from premature wrinkling. Check theingredient list of your skin care products to ensure thatth y do not cont in fr gr nc . Thro out ny product th tcont in fr gr nc .

Rubbing the eyes can also lead to puf ness and check outany allergies that you may have from pollens or food withyour GP.

Paperback Fiction: The Lacuna - Barbara Kingsolver Some of the national reviews have been rather lukewarm about this book, but I

really loved it. The main character, Harrison Shepherd, is a novelist who writesromantic adventures. Born in Washington, by the age of 13 he is living in Mexicowith his mother, and her right-wing businessman boyfriend. Shepherd gets a jobas a cook with Diego Rivera and his artist wife, Frida Kahlo, (real life characters)who take Trotsky into their household when he has to ee Russia and hide fromStalin’s hit-men. The assassin eventually arrives, Trotsky is murdered, and thesecond half of the novel deals with the way Shepherd’s private life is taken topieces by McCarthyist ‘Red’ witch-hunters who suspect him of being a militantCommuni t.

I know many of our customers are big fans of The Poisonwood Bible and Iwould dare to suggest this is just as good. Kingsolver has a magic way of lookingat history from a new angle and this is a highly satisfying and many-layerednovel. Perfect holiday reading and a great one for your Book Club- I hope to doit in our !
