NEW DELHI, Apr 5:
President Ram Nath Kovindtoday said it was regrettable thatwomen have not been given theirdue in the business arena, andasked India Inc to take determinedsteps towards creating gender-sensitive supply chains.
Delivering the keynote addressat the annual session of FICCILadies Organisation (FLO) here,the President said that women con-stitute half our country. They con-tribute to our economy at work andat home, in many diverse ways.Yet, when it comes to business, itis regrettable that they have notbeen given their due.
Author-entrepreneur TwinkleKhanna, producer Ekta Kapoorand scientist Tessy Thomas areamong the nine extraordinarywomen achievers who receivedthe FLO Icon award at a functiongraced by the President here.
"We need to create conditionsfor more and more of our daugh-ters and sisters to come into theworkforce. We need to push hard-er to ensure appropriate, encour-aging and safe conditions athome, in society and at the work-place to enhance the percentage ofworking women," Kovind said.
He stated that the corporatesector must take determinedsteps towards creating women-friendly and gender-sensitivesupply chains to empowerwomen in our economy, ratherthan just accommodate them.
The President said that if morewomen become part of the work-force, both household incomes andour GDP will rise. We will becomea more prosperous nation. Muchgreater than that, we will become amore equal society, he said.
He stressed that we need totake the magic of entrepreneur-ship to (and facilitate the start-ups of) our sisters and daughtersat the bottom of the pyramid.
The President said that theGovernment has taken decisive
steps to promote a culture ofenterprise among ordinary citi-zens, especially women. TheStand-Up India initiative waslaunched in April 2016 toencourage entrepreneurship
among women, SCs and STs.About 45,000 loans have beendisbursed, mainly to sole propri-etors. "Almost 39,000 of thesehave gone to women – an over-whelming proportion.(PTI)
