NEW DELHI, Sept 15:
Counting of votes will be heldtomorrow in three Lok Sabha and33 assembly constituencies spreadacross 10 states where bypollswere held on September 13, withstakes high for BJP.
The three Lok Sabha seatsare in Vadodara (Gujarat), vacat-ed by Prime Minister NarendraModi, Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh)and Medak (Telangana) while 11assembly constituencies are inUP, nine in Gujarat, four inRajasthan, two in West Bengal,five in Northeastern states andone each in Chhattisgarh and
Andhra Pradesh.24 of these Assembly seats
were held by BJP and one eachby its allies Apna Dal and TDP.
After BJP’s near-total sweepof the 80 seats in Uttar Pradeshin Lok Sabha polls just fourmonths ago, it is to be seenwhether the party can retain its10 seats. One seat was earlierwith its ally Apna Dal.
Last month, the saffron partyhad received a jolt in Assembly
byelections suffering a 4-6defeat at the hands of the RJD-JD(U)-Congress alliance inBihar and yielding two strong-holds to Congress in Karnatakaand Madhya Pradesh.
Tomorrow’s bypoll results,seen as yet another test ofNarendra Modi government’spopularity since it assumedpower in May, are also impor-tant as BJP is preparing for pollsin Haryana and Maharashtranext month where it hopes tooust the Congress.
Around 53 per cent votes werepolled in the seats in UP, includingMainpuri vacated by SamajwadiParty supremo Mulayam SinghYadav. SP has fielded Tej PratapSingh Yadav, the grandson ofMulayam’s elder brother and thechallenge for it is not just to winthe seat again but also to maintainthe big margin.
The 11 Assembly seats inUP, whose outcome may be apointer to which way the politi-cal wind is blowing in the run upto 2017 assembly polls, areSaharanpur Nagar, Noida,Thakurdwara, Bijnor, Nighasan,Balha, Sirathu, Rohaniya,Hamirpur, Charkhari andLucknow East.
In Rajasthan, it is a closecontest between main opposi-tion Congress and the rulingBJP, which would try to retainall four seats and maintain atally of 163 in the House of 200.The four assembly seats inRajasthan saw a voting figure of66 per cent.
The counting of votes wouldbegin in four district headquar-ters of Jhunjhunu, Ajmer, Kotaand Bharatpur tomorrow at 0800hrs, Chief Electoral OfficerGovind Sharma said in Jaipur.
Trinamool Congress is hop-ing to retain two Assembly seatsof Basirhat Dakshin andChowringhee in West Bengal inthe face of Saradha chit fundscam that has already ensnaredsome of its leaders.
In Gujarat, Narendra Modi’ssuccessor as Chief MinisterAnandiben Patel is facing herfirst big test with the bypolls inVadodara LS seat and in nineAssembly constituencies, allheld by BJP earlier.
It is the first election inGujarat in more than 12 yearsthat BJP fought without its starcampaigner Modi.
In Medak, TRS’ K PrabhakarReddy contested against BJP’s TJayaprakash Reddy in Medak,
the seat vacated by K CChandrasekhar Rao on becom-ing Telangana Chief Minister.
TDP is trying hard to prove itwon’t be easy to conquer its bas-tion Nandigama assembly inKrishna district where it is in adirect fight against Congress.
Congress again faces chal-lenge in Assam against BJP aswell as perfume baron BadruddinAjmal’s All India UnitedDemocratic Front. The Assemblyseats were bypolls were held areLakhipur and Silchar, both heldby Congress earlier. Jamunamukhwas held by AIUDF.
Counting of votes will alsobe held for Rangang-Yangangseat in Sikkim, Manu in Tripuraand Antagarh in Chhattisgarh.(PTI)
