SOCIETY NOTICE BOARD Editor’s Comments: Welcome to the first regular bi-monthly 80 page issue of TRACKS for 2018. Hopefully you all had a good festive period, though that seems ages ago, without being blown or washed away in subsequent storms which thankfully we never got up in our corner. We didn’t even get the heavy snow though it snowed on Boxing Day and it stayed consistently very cold until nearly the end of January. Unfortunately this issue got delayed again due that very problem as we lost our water so time needed to sort out our pump as we are on private water, only just over a day without water !!

Apart from chaotic and often cold weather it has certainly been a hectic time on the railways with many changes, stock transfers, new services and services ending. There are no Colas Cl.47s or Grand Central HSTs anymore and GBRf has acquired more Cl.66s from DBC. The first loco hauled TransPennine service was snuck in before the end of 2017 to meet contractual obligations, Cl.387s are now running between Paddington and Didcot and Boden Rail at Washwood Heath has moved. Many new classes of EMUs and DMUs has being added with more promised resulting in older EMU classes being stored and potentially heading for scrap if no-one wants them. This has all meant a lot of changes to record in our new 2018 books (see below).

So having taken on all the books a year ago January has been non-stop producing the first 4 books of 2018, one more than in 2017. For a volunteer role the workload is silly with me working every day. I have also gone to the trouble of refreshing the book front cover design, hopefully to make them stand out from our competitors. It is worth bearing in mind that as the only Society doing so, we are producing books to compete with big publishers who can drive costs down and sell through retailers or the cheaper end of the market with books of numbers but no helpful explanations or style. Moreover the orders have been piling in, up 60% more than 2017 with 261 orders comprising 405 books so far in 5 weeks and all sorts of sundries (most not available to order last year). That takes a lot of work filling in the sales database. As has happened previously with membership and TRACKS it looks like I have

made another rod for my own back with the introduction of the wire bound version of the UK Pocket Book which has been so successful on pre-orders it has virtually killed the original version, which many in all honesty have found difficult to underline in easily.

It was expected 2018 would be a transition year between the two versions as it appeared from comments that it was 50:50. However hardly anyone has ordered the original version, shunning it for the new more user friendly wire bound version. This means it is un-economic to print the original version for just a handful of

potential buyers in exactly the original stitched format but we will print it as perfect bound, the only way a small quantity can be economically printed. It can also be turned around by the printer in just over a week rather than the previous 3 weeks, so is now also available earlier than planned. Just to differentiate between the two versions, the cover photos (front & rear) have been changed giving a few more members a chance to have their photos feature plus the latest Cl.66/7 re-numbering was not available for the wire bound cover, above left. Therefore you can’t get a more up to date photo than that of 66782 on the cover of the perfect bound (with spine) version on the right above. This means whichever way we print the Pocket Book in the future, it can be released simultaneously with the Combine with identical data, not previously possible. One important point to mention however is that to produce the two versions this year has cost us over a £1.20 more per copy and the thicker wire bound version also costs 30p more to post but we haven’t raised the price. Once we have a full year’s sales

figures we can make a decision for 2019 on whether we only print one book so saving with economies of scale but with postal rates due to rise, a slight price rise will be necessary to £9.00 (members) and £12.00 (non-members but it is still value for money against our competitors.

Having also had to take over the event organising with Chris, in practise I am the one ringing and emailing, that has in itself been a source of aggravation. Trying to book a visit is like getting the proverbial ‘blood out of a stone’ and it would be far easier to not bother offering this member benefit. Perseverance is the key but it takes time and it appears a few members do not have patience or understanding of the extreme difficulty in arranging any sort of visit to a commercial railway facility. As it now states under the EVENTS heading please only book for an event that has been fully arranged and we are requesting attendance. Because of the bi-monthly release of TRACKS trying to give you advance notice of possible visits at the end of one year for the next year has backfired with requests to book visits not yet confirmed !! Also if you book too far in advance we have to check again nearer the time in case your circumstances have changed. Having said all that, I have managed to confirm both the Crewe Basford Hall Yard and Long Marston visits, so you can start booking now (see below). DRS Crewe Open Day is also confirmed.

One good bit of Society news is that we have broken the 1100 member barrier and are now surging onto new levels of membership only seen for a short period after formation in the mid 1970s. So thanks to all those who have joined and to those stalwarts who stick in year after year. As many of you do kindly comment, what the Society has to offer gets better and better. Though many of you continue to say the membership fee should rise, it is tricky balancing the costs of running the Society and printing TRACKS with variables outside of our control, against encouraging members to join and stay.

One final bit of news for families is that we have created a new reduced price adult Additional Family Membership category for those living at the same address. This will also benefit existing members who fall into this category, where a switch can be made on renewal. Further details below in Membership Matters. If you think you would benefit please contact our Membership Sec, Colin. Publications: Our first 2018 new editions are now available (see below) to purchase, though many of you have already pre-ordered and should have or be receiving your books. I say it every year but these are really the best ever with even more detail added and with more of those aggravating items of rolling stock either missing or long scrapped amended.

Just to make my life even more difficult we have released three books in one go, of which one is in two different formats, with another one due imminently. But at least you can be up and running for the new spotting season with everything you need if you also get one of our now popular notebooks and pens. The first three books are UK Pocket Book (254 pages) (wire bound) & (perfect bound with spine), UK Combine (242 pages) and UK Locomotives (66 pages). UK Wagons is to follow at the end of February. Next in line will be the revised USFs which will be released in the summer. Prices are on the rear cover.

Page 5: TRACKS · have also gone to the trouble of refreshing the book front cover designhopefully to make them stand , ... Because of the bi-monthly release of TRACKS trying to give you

In case anyone is troubled by the revised condensed font I must explain why this was necessary. This was to prevent both the Combine and the new Pocket Book becoming too thick and unwieldy with even larger ring bindings over 25 mm dia, which would have cost more to print and taken the book into the next postal bracket requiring the price rising by £3 to £20 (non-member). The text is the same font size but in a condensed style and is actually the same density. The condensed font allowed the layout to be improved, particularly in the EMU section where more twin columns could be used, saving about 40 pages. Remember the 2017 books were on the limit of viability at 258 pages (Combine) and 288 pages (Pocket Book) and more info has been put in with several pages of new EMUs etc. Therefore several factors needed addressing and the condensed font was the compromise and I will understand any criticism as I was initially reluctant to change the font, but when It made such a big difference I had to go with it.

It took a lot of work to completely re-format the books that hopefully have a pleasing style but are practical and user friendly. I am also trying to produce books that members want but will sell in enough quantities to make them economic to print, especially if a lot of work is needed in compiling them. Having talked to other publishers of spotting / log books it appears there is a big market out there that we all have a share of and it depends on the user as to what level of detail they want against what they are prepared to pay, hence the variation in books. Hopefully most members support us by buying our books rather than others and promote them to friends.

Just one last bit of info to help explain what extremely busy entails. On top of compiling 4 books designing the covers and editing TRACKS all mentioned above, I have had to liaise with printers / Ian Allan shops, design 3 A4 full page adverts for inclusion in Railways Illustrated and Rail Express magazines, constantly update the website, revise the order form (several times) / membership forms / new members info, started the new sales database for 2018 / processed / posted out orders and organised events....all in 6 weeks since Christmas in which time I haven’t seen a single train !!

Sundries: Notebooks: It appears the notebooks have been a success and more will need to be printed.

Polo Shirts: Again many apologies for the delay in supplying our new polo shirts as I have been extremely busy both with the Society and domestically. We have got sufficient orders now to progress and they will be available during late February and ready for the AGM. To also explain the delay, I wasn’t happy with the initial company I tried or with the embroidered logo from a local supplier to me, so better a delay getting them right. Hopefully I will now find time to sort the supplier and re-do a neater design....only the Wagon book on the go in next few weeks !! Membership Benefits: We have negotiated with ST Publications a 20% off all their range of European books. You will need to give your membership number and order by post or telephone only 07760 284494. You can download and print an order form from their website www.stpublications.co.uk

We have also extended the Additional Family Membership category to adults (£10.00) who live at the same address as an existing member ie. spouse / partner / sibling or parent. This is in addition to the existing Child rate age 10-16 (£5.00). This will be available for existing members where two or more are currently paying the full individual rate eg for 2 Adults £27.50 (Standard) or £26.00 (eMember). You can switch to this new rate on renewal (whoever comes first) using just one of your membership numbers so saving yourselves a few quid. Just one copy of TRACKS will be sent to the joint address. By offering this new category, those who originally joined between the ages of 10-16 can seamlessly continue once the age of 16 is reached with just an additional £5.00 to pay.

Membership Matters: New Members: (* ex-members re-joined) Duncan Allwood (Bristol), Mark Atkins (Doncaster), Chris Ball (Shepshed), Brian Bennett (Reading), John Bushnell (Alfreton), Dougal Chestnutt (Evesham), Terry Cox (Yeovil), Andrew Cross (Radstock), Robson Cutter (Swindon), Brian Dawson (Grimsby), Andrew Drake (Colchester), Adrian Drinkwater (Worcester), Andrew Edwards (Stoke-on-Trent), Paul Fowler (Camberley), Albert Goggins (Seaham), George Gray (Inverness), Paul Hackett (Ammanford), Michael Hall (Manchester), Tony Hancock (Chorley), Neil Imrie (Kettering), Stephen Jones (Lymington), Russell Kinder (Huddersfield), Brian Magilton (Stalybridge), Adam Maloney (Thirsk), Dennis Morris (Ashby-de-la-Zouch), Richard Needham (Plymouth), Vaughan Norris (Reading), Jeff Norton* (Sharnbrook), Stephen Radford (Kirkby Stephen), David Rice (York), Paul Roberts (Southampton), Colin Rutter (Worksop), Andrew Ryder (Plymouth), Tim Singleton (Mossley), Dominic Smith (Crawley), Paul Smith (Seaford), Roger Smith (Milton Keynes), Simon Smith (Barrington), Alice Stacey-Clarke (Taunton), Stephen Summers (Doncaster), Ralph Sunter (Chatburn), Michael Wells (Earls Barton), Natalie White (Plymouth), Peter Wreford (Margate) - a warm welcome to you all.

Family Membership: We have re-created a new Family Membership where a member can add a child (age 10-16) onto their membership for an additional £5 instead of them having to pay full rate. So for £22.50 (Standard Membership) or £21 (eMembership) both then get one copy of TRACKS but it allows both to attend Member Only Visits (normal separate fees apply). Ideally this is best done on joining or renewal and the membership number will be the same for both. This is a way to encourage more younger members and it helps where someone wants to take them along on a visit which requires ICRS Membership. If there are any existing members who wish to switch please contact Colin.

Obituary: Sadly we recently lost James Dobson from Beckenham. Condolences go to his family. Society Magazine TRACKS: Distribution: TRACKS is distributed direct from the printers to members in a clear plastic wrapping with an address carrier sheet (reverse printed with a Renewal / Reminder form if appropriate). If any member fails to receive their copy after one week from the estimated delivery date below then please contact the Editor. For current info during the month refer to the TRACKS page of our website.

The latest date for articles / info for the Mar / Apr 2018 issue is Friday 30th March 2018 with delivery to members after Monday 9th April 2018

please check the TRACKS page on the website for date of posting from the printers

EVENTS

All 2018 events organised or with provisional dates are shown below. Further events may be added in due course between issues of TRACKS so keep a eye on our website. PLEASE DO NOT try to book places for events with provisional dates shown by TBC until they are formalised or where the event though confirmed is many months in advance with details yet to be provided. Once they have, BOOKING OPEN will be shown alongside and a request will be made for you to book your place.

MEMBERS ONLY VISITS AGM: Sat 10th Mar 2018 – East Lancs Rly (ELR): FINAL BOOKING We are having another go at spreading the AGM around the UK and having one in the north so please support it. We have arranged to visit the ELR one of the biggest preserved lines in the UK and which has extensive sheds and yards, mostly out of public view. However to pack it all in is going to be very tight and some may want to come but cannot easily arrange travel, but at least we are offering this visit. The cost for the tour is £5 payable on the day.

The tour will take 3 – 3½ hours so has to start at 9.30 prompt from Bolton Street Station, just as the first services of the day leave the Station and will require a lot of walking on often rough ground, so sadly is not suitable for anyone who is not mobile. Apologies if that means you can’t get there in time but at least public transport is good in the area early on the Saturday morning.

For those then attending the AGM, a cold buffet lunch will then be served over in the Transport Museum on the opposite side of Bolton Street to the station entrance between 13.00 and 13.30. The AGM will then start around 14.00 so there is time to quickly look round the Museum. The AGM will end at around 15.30 prior to the Museum shutting at 16.00 with time if not already done to purchase our sundries and new 2018 books which will be available. There should then be time to look around the Yard outside which has a viewing gallery to Castlecroft Wagon Works where the remaining locos / stock not already seen are housed and a last linger on Bury Bolton Street Station to see the last services of the day arrive at 16.43 from Heywood & 16.44 from Rawtenstall. Sadly there is no time to fit a ride along the line as I am sure you will all agree that having a full tour of the extensive sheds & yards is more valuable.

If you wish to attend the tour, AGM or both and haven’t already done so, please contact Christine by email on the secretary@... email (see page 2) or ring 01466 760724. You might actually get me as I usually answer the phone. All those who have expressed an interest in coming are being contacted to confirm attendance.

Crewe Basford Hall: Sat 21st Apr 2018: BOOKING OPEN The trip around Basford Hall Yard starts at 13.00 from either the Freightliner main office at the southern end of the access road or if new security gates have been fitted then at the northern end, confirmation nearer the time. If it is at the southern end please do not dawdle along the access road taking numbers as you will see them on the visit or on the way back. The cost for the visit is £15 payable on the day. To book your place please contact Christine by email on the secretary@... email (see page 2) or ring 01466 760724 (Trevor or Chris)

Long Marston: Sat 9th Jun 2018: BOOKING OPEN We have arranged to attend the only event planned at Long Marston in 2018. The charge is £15 payable on the day but you MUST inform us in advance that you are attending and ONLY if you are 100% certain. If that is so, please contact our President, Simon (details on page 2) by the cut-off point of the 13th May 2017 so we can provide the organisers with a list of attendees.

Please arrive no later than 10.00 with the aim to start at 10.30. We will be there from 09.30 so if you arrive earlier you will then have time to pay and buy books / sundries which we will have available. Yard lists will be available for sale on the day from the organisers for you to check off stock, though we will as in 2017 provide a detailed list in TRACKS from members own sightings. Coffee and cake will be available from around midday but feel free to bring refreshments. The site must be clear by 16.00, so that is a decent amount of time to wander freely around the site, however you must adhere to the rules below and respect this opportunity.

• No public display of your photographs either online, in magazines or any social media. It is the adherence to this rule that allows visits to continue every year. Any breach will result in membership being withdrawn.

• No climbing onto, between or underneath stock. • No entry into any building or enclosed area unless invited. • Wear good walking shoes, bring waterproof clothing. Hi-viz jackets are preferred but not

essential (no rail movements on the day). • You are entirely responsible for your own safety

There is parking on site with access off Station Road. Programme your Sat Nav with either CV37 8PL or CV37 8RP or if like me you prefer maps, Station Road runs just south of Long Marston village between the minor road to Mickleton and the B4632 Mickleton to Stratford-upon-Avon. The entrance is on the south side of Station Road at the Long Marston end near the ‘The Greenway’ cycle path.

For those who went in 2017 you will know it is a big site (130 acres) and with more stock than ever it is a lot of walking, several miles up and down sidings. However the organisers are hoping to utilise the resident DMU to provide trips around the perimeter track. Also for those that missed out last year, remember to visit the secure Compound as that is where most of the stored locos are. We will no doubt be restricted to an hour inside as previously and you will need it all !

Eastleigh Works: Sat 8thSep 2018: Date confirmed, arrive 13.30, start around 14.15, further details nearer the time.

OPEN DAYS (to be attended with our sales stand) DRS Crewe Gresty Bridge Open Day: Sat 21st Jul 2018: 10.00 – 16.00, confirmed by DRS but not yet on their website which will be where you can book tickets.

ACCIDENTS

This is an occasional series devoted to showing the various mishaps / crashes that have befallen rolling stock in the UK over the years including current incidents. If you have photos and any accompanying info, then please forward to the Editor.

Having worked into Barrington Quarry with 47813 on the 17th January 2018, 47815 failed and 47813 left on its own with the 6T02 empty working to Wembley. 37884 was diagrammed to work the following day’s 6T01 from Wembley but whilst running around its wagons it apparently struck 47815 in the dark as it was fouling the loop. The photos show misaligned buffers on both locos though 37884 came off worse with bodywork damage, receiving the classic 37 nose droop. Both locos were moved to nearby Foxton exchange sidings for assessment and the damaged nose of 37884 sheeted over. 37884 was subsequently moved to Eastleigh Works by 48748 on the 1st Feb 2018.

The photos were taken on the 22nd January 2018 by Keith Partlow in Foxton sidings.

News from Norfolk (Stuart Moore): December: The month started with the RHTT being operated by 66426 and 66303 on 1 December 2017.

A brief stop off on the 4th at Crown Point saw 08480 shunting in the yard and 37422 t&t three DRS Mk2 coaches including 2 DBSOs with 57301 heading for Willesden and beyond.

On the 5th 37606 and 37218 ran the Stowmarket to Dereham (MNR) servicing run which ran into platform 2 for the driver to change ends. The midday RHTT from Stowmarket to Stowmarket via Gt. Yarmouth was powered by 66421 & 66424.

December 6th was the start of a busy couple of days in Norwich. 37405 and 37422 were noted in the Royal dock with 57305 and 37312 on the Northern Belle stock in the yard in advance of a dining tour from Norwich to various locations, Also in the yard was 66181 on the Peak Forest to Norwich stones. Finally 66421 and 66424 arrive on the Stowmarket to Dereham MNR servicing train.

A further visit at 17.30 in the evening saw 37405 & 37422 still in the yard and 57305 and 57312 now in Platform 2 on the dining special. In addition 57314 arrived with the ECS for the next

day’s Christmas special to York with 4-6-2 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ on the rear.

The next day was an early start to go to Trowse to see the Cathedrals Express tour with 60009. 57305 t&t 57312 were in the loop at Trowse to make space in the yard for the steam. The 57’s departed at 08.44, seen below, shortly before the steam to run ECS to Sheffield to run a tour from there.

The steam tour ran without diesel back up with 57314 running light later in the day to bring the tour back to Norwich from Peterborough where 60009 was removed to go light to Southall.

A visit to Norwich station in the morning of the 12 December 2017 to see the Dereham run drew a blank but I was there to see the DRS crew start up 37422 and 37423 which was a very smoky and dramatic event !!

Later in the day 37218 and 37606 were noted on the Gt Yarmouth RHTT and 37405 and 37419 on the 17.36 to Gt Yarmouth.

23

66421 and 66424 powered the Stowmarket to Gt Yarmouth RHTT on the 13th (see RHTT GALLERY.

By the 18th 37422 and 37405 were on the ‘short set’.

37606 and Europhoenix 37611, seen below at 09.35, were both in the yard at Norwich on the 20th along with 66143 on the Peak Forest stones.

37611 was on a structure train along with Network Rail DBSO 9714. By the evening the 66 had gone and 37425 had arrived from Willesden. The final visit to Norwich station for 2017 was to see 37422 and 37425 on a shortened short set formed of just 2 coaches.

January: The monthly gauging train from Cambridge to Cambridge via Norwich Gt. Yarmouth and Lowestoft ran on the 4th January and was seen in Norwich with 37116 t&t 37254. On the same day the short set was seen still running as a 2 coach set with 37419 t&t 37425.

A visit was also made to Norwich station on the morning of the 5th January to see 37609 and

37423 which had arrived in Norwich the night before with a replacement coach for the short set. The 37s were seen in the company of 37405 in the middle of the yard in Norwich along with 37422 which was located in the Royal Dock. In addition 156498 was noted on platform 6 at Norwich waiting to form a service to the North west. 37609 was seen later at 13.45 at Trowse hauling 37405 and 37422 to Crewe DIT (see opposite).

66516 was noted in Trowse goods loop on the 9th waiting to return to Tunstead with the empty wagons. The Freightliner operated Tunstead to Trowse has picked up a little compared to its frequency in December. However, for the last 2 weeks of January it was the same loco all week. 66536 was noted on all moves for the week beginning on the 22nd and 66617 the week beginning the 28th.

66030 was noted in Norwich yard on the 10th with the Peak Forest to Norwich stone move. 37423 was also present in the yard and 37419 and 37425 on the short set. These two have performed well on the short set until the 29th

when 37425 was removed for exam at Crewe. It was replaced by 37405 on the 30th but only for a short period as 37405 was not running well and it was replaced by 37423 on the 31st.

The Peak forest stone traffic has also been noted in the care of 66030 on the 12th, 66034 on the 17th, 66151 on the 24th and 66014 on the 31st.

The other significant move in January was of 37688 and 50026 from the Mid Norfolk Railway to the Severn Valley Railway on the 24th. The two were locos seen below at 09.00 in Trowse goods loop by 66779 where it ran around before the journey across country to the SVR.

Great Central Rly (GCR) Gala 28th Jan 2018 by Colin James: The Great Central Railway held its Winter Steam Gala over the days of Friday 26th to Sunday 28th January. I attended on Saturday 27th on what was cold windy and mostly wet day with no sight of the sun. The day was cut a little short as the worsening light and cold got the best of me.

It had been hoped that 4-6-0 Hall 6990 ‘Witherslack Hall’ would also be running, but this was still in the works, its repairs not completed. The Cl.101/111 DMU also saw action with 2 booked turns. Shunting duties at Loughborough were carried out by D3690.

Three rakes of coaches were in use with two sets of 6 carriages for the Loughborough – Leicester services and a 4 carriage set for the Loughborough – Rothley services (augmented by the DMU). Slotted in and around the passenger turns were the 6 carriage TPO demonstration train, a Windcutter mineral train, a van goods train and a mixed wagon goods train. The timetable is a tried and tested one working well, with numerous loco movements to be seen at Loughborough and the double track formation and sidings at Swithland put to good use.

On the Saturday the timetable settled down well, with passenger turns running to time, but the freight turns generally running 10 mins in front of the supplied timetable! This was until a passenger was unfortunately taken ill aboard a train at Loughborough causing delays with locos running out of turn and a couple of trains not running at all. It also meant the mixed goods train wasn’t seen in operation that day. The timetable then settled down to running up to 15 mins late. One highlight of the day was the double heading of the 13065 + 8572 on the lunchtime non-stop service.

Whilst making use of my lineside photographic permit, the inclement weather meant not straying too far from Loughborough Central station for the day. Observations at Loughborough indicated a successful gala with busy platforms and the vast majority of trains full and in some cases standing. The

home diesel fleet was stabled in their usual positions around the station, with the addition of a recent returnee. As a result of Boden Rail having to relocate away from its Washwood Heath site, 07005 which was there under a long term restoration deal has returned to the GCR, reportedly on the 16th January. Presently an engineless rolling chassis and cab it was stabled in the sidings to the south of the station waiting a move closer to the shed (see above left).

SHUNTER SPOT

Rye Farm, Wishaw, West Midlands: This is the base for Moveright International whose low loaders can be seen regularly hauling rolling stock around the UK and abroad. It is on Dunton Lane just west of the M6 Toll Road, A446 and M42 Jnct 9 interchange. Stock can often be seen in transit through the yard but there is a resident collection of stored stock by multiple owners including 13 Cl.08/09s, 1 Cl.47 and 2 industrial shunters at time of my visit on the 24th November 2017. The yard also contains workshop facilities for Railway Support Services (RSS) for repair of shunters with some long time residents being used as donors so in a sorry state. Surprisingly there is a large collection of wagons including a steam crane some of which have been there a while judging by the undergrowth around them. More on these in a latter article.

LIGHT RAIL & METRO NEWS

Metrolink by Geoff Hope: On the 27th November as part of a crackdown on vandalism and anti-social behaviour on the Greater Manchester Transport network, police hired a drone from a private company as a deterrent for one day on the Rochdale / Oldham line, which has had its fair share of vandalism over the last few months. The result of the trial was a success and will be assessed for further use of the drone in the future.

On the 30th November minor delays occurred on both the Bury and Ashton lines due to failed trams. Towards the end of November the new substation at Brooklands on the Altrincham line had was brought into use, followed by that at Whitefield on the Bury line enabling more double trams to be run increasing capacity. The Bury - Altrincham line carries 40% of the total passengers on the network.

Lessons learned from the last winter meant that trams have been running since mid October frequently through the night to prevent ice build up and will continue to do so until mid March. This exercise is an improvement on last season when trams were dispatched at irregular intervals creating problems the following day especially at Trafford depot when trams were unable to leave the depot.

On the 8th and 12th December cars became stuck on the tram tracks on the Airport line delaying services for forty minutes & one hour respectively. On the 15th December a number of ticket machines on the Airport / Eccles and East Didsbury lines were not accepting card payments due to a technical glitch. During the early hours of the 17th December a pedestrian who was hit by a tram received serious injuries on Aytoun Street between Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly Railway Station. The incident has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). Another “kissing” incident occurred at St Peters Square tram stop between trams 3113 & 3094 on the 22nd December at 13.30, the second incident of this nature exactly six weeks to the day Very little damage to the trams and no injuries reported. This incident did not affect the whole network as did the last incident at St Peters Square. On the 27th December severe delays were caused on the Rochdale line at Union Street in Oldham due to an ambulance blocking the tracks while medics dealt with an emergency. On the 29th December a taxi finished up on the Second City Crossing tracks at Victoria causing slight delays to East Didsbury / Shaw / Rochdale services which were diverted via Market Street / Shudehill for approximately ninety minutes while the taxi & driver were taken home by the recovery truck.

Trams 3011, 3025 & 3032 have had vinyls added celebrating Christmas with Noel the elf which have since been removed. Trams 3004 & 3018 have lost their adverts for LBC a national radio station and the Call of Duty (World War 2) theme computer game respectively.

A visit to Crumpsall tram stop after the observations on the 10th January revealed new accessible ramps at the Manchester end of both platforms with a new track level pedestrian crossing opening on the 3rd January. This allowed the footbridge to be removed in the early hours of Sunday 14th January. The contractors will then move to demolish the original disabled access ramp, passenger lift and widen the Manchester bound platform. The increased capacity on the Altrincham and Bury line can be

seen from observations on the Bury - Piccadilly, Altrincham - Ethiad Campus and East Didsbury-Rochdale services which each have two single tram services increased to double trams.

Monday 22nd January a collision between tram and car on the Ashton line created delays of about an hour whilst the badly damaged car was removed though the tram was only slightly damaged. No injuries were reported.

On the 28th January changes were made to services on the network. The Airport service will be extended from Deansgate Castlefield to Victoria terminating in the centre platform, routed on the First City Crossing via Market Street / Shudehill releasing capacity at Deansgate Castlefield The early morning services from Firswood to the Airport will start from Deansgate Castlefield. The extension of the Airport service will create additional capacity to the City Centre from South Manchester. Media City services will be extended to Ethiad Campus from Piccadilly; Altrincham services to Ethiad Campus will terminate at Piccadilly with the second bay platform at Altrincham brought back into use to increase capacity. Sunday evening services will be extended by approximately one hour into the early hours of Monday, the frequency of services will continue at six and twelve minute intervals. It is interesting to note the extra trams in service on the 31st January observations.

RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS

The Story of 2017 by Ray Smith – Part 3:

Lads Week - Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria & Hungary: The year continued with the now annual ‘Lads Week’ though ‘inflation’ has increased this to 15 days, using a 15 day Inter-Rail Global Pass which I consider this really good value for money. We all arranged to meet at our hotel for the first night in Hannover. I flew in to Dusseldorf, then headed to Hannover using the first day of my pass.

A visit to the Bombardier workshops in Kassel is a must. This is situated at the end of one of the tram routes. From the public side of the railings many new locomotives can be seen. Cls.147/5, 187/1 and

187/3 were visible in the yard. I took some photographs, yet for some reason my card did not record them! From Kassel we went to Munster. A station with a good selection of units and locomotives to be seen. We returned back to Hannover in time for the evening rush hour.

The next day was spent in Berlin. I have seen all of the S-Bahn units and the east – west lines other trains are either ICEs or local loco hauled. I like to go out to Lichtenberg as from the platform you can see some of the units on the adjacent depot and there are other trains that terminate there, which you cannot see in the city. From the city, the station before Lichtenberg is Noldnerplatz. Adjacent to this station is the old Lichtenberg shed that had a good variety of ex-DR locomotives allocated there. Today, private operators stable their locomotive and units there.

As I also have a tram interest I spent some time at the underground station in Hannover. The street section outside the station closed this year. The next day, the 8th April was disappointing. We travelled to Hamburg, and changed for a local train to Maschen. It is a half mile walk from the station which takes us over the bridge

then down to the shed. Even if permission is not granted, although I have never been refused, many locomotives can be seen. This year was different. The bridge was closed to everything and to get to the other side was a detour of many miles. The visit was aborted and we returned to Maschen station to return to Hamburg.

The popular HST services operated successfully by Grand Central (GC) ceased operating on the 31st December 2017 with the sets moving to East Midlands Trains (EMT). 43467 has received EMT livery at Loram, Derby. They are being replaced by redundant Cl.180s (see opposite bottom) cascaded from Great Western Railway (GWR) which finished operating on the 17th December 2017.

As previously reported the East Coast franchise is to be terminated early in 2020 and be taken over by a consortium which will operate both InterCity services and the track, a new model for future franchises.

With Northern Belle (NB) now in the hands of a consortium between David Smith from WCR and David Pitts, a Huddersfield businessman operations are to operated by DRS solely using existing Cl.57/3s. As Cl.68 and other traction is now barred, UK Railtours has cancelled all previously scheduled tours as they their trains require 100mph traction to maintain paths. All NB coaches moved away from Kidderminster at the end of 2017 and are now based at WCR, Carnforth.
