MOOOI AT ISALONI DEL MOBILE.

Find your way home to Moooi’s ‘unexpected welcome’ at via Savona 56 On occasion of the 52nd edition of

the Salone del Mobile, Moooi has prepared an entire collection of refresh-ing new designs and surprising experiences that will be revealed at an unexpected location:

via Savona 56.

From the 8th to the 14th of April Moooi is taking up residence in the im-posing space of 1.700 m2 and transforming it into a stylish assembly of colourful living quar-ters, new product dis-plays, lounges, an ar-tistic exhibition, along with the FRAME Moooi award nominees exposi-tion, panel discussion, exclusive ceremony and VIP cocktail evening.

Moooi’s biggest gift to the public is to reveal how a wide empty space can be magically trans-formed into several icon-ic, rich and colourfully dressed living quarters. This assortment of in-terior environments is decorated with an inspir-ing variety of patterns and colours to embrace any kind of space and make people of different ages, cultures and per-sonalities fall in love with their homes. Of course Moooi will make sure to dress and acces-sories all the interior sets with an irresistible blend of exquisite rich-ness, nurturing warmth and colourful playful-ness.

The living quarters will be furnished with items from the current collec-tion & many new, exciting creations by Marcel Wan-ders, Studio Job, Joost van Bleiswijk, Edward van Vliet, Neri & Hu, Nika Zupanc, Moooi Works / Bart Schilder, Bertjan Pot, Raimond Puts, Lorenza Bozzoli and ZMIK

(Matthias Mohr & Rolf Indermuhle). You are wel-come to enjoy, amongst others, the artistic temperament and intimate nature of Marcel Wanders’ Canvas, Zlig and Cloud sofa’s, the retro atmos-pheres of Nika Zupanc’s Golden Chair and the so-phisticated brightness of ZMIK’s Kroon lamps. Take some time to walk around and study the high-stream inventiveness of Joost van Bleiswijk’s Construction lamps, the pragmatic playfulness of Studio Job’s Bucket & Tub lamps and the grace-ful symbolism of Lorenza Bozzoli’s Juuyo lamps.

The new designs can also be admired and ob-served in detail along an extensive ‘catwalk’ presentation, in which they ‘pose’ individually to share their pristine beauty with the public. This unexpected home vi-sion brings to life a whole world of new ideas and inspiring settings to brighten up daily life with a touch of magic. It represents a place where visions converge and where every travel-ler can stop to admire the perfect eclectic mix of culture & experiences that make a home environ-ment more beautiful and unique.

Celebrating the suc-cessful cooperation and friendship between two highly creative souls, Marcel Wanders has asked renowned photographer Erwin Olaf to join the Moooi presentation with

a grand selection of pho-tographs from his per-sonal work.

Interior design meets artistic photography and they connect, creat-ing the perfect balance between two inspiring, stylish and playful re-alities. The photographs unfold their stories and feelings on a large scale, reaching a stun-ning height of 4,5 meters especially for this ex-hibition. Admiring them feels like stepping into a world of exceptional sophistication, permeat-ed with the sharp inten-sity of human emotions and enveloped in a dreamy haze of subtle tension.

Although cleverly con-cealed, their hidden stories instinctively appeal and connect to our deepest sense of being, revealing the strong frailty of the human spirit. Erwin Olaf’s has chosen to challenge the public with pieces for his se-ries Grief, Fall, Key-hole en Berlin which respectively challenge everyday notions, dwell on sensations of shame & guilt, or show the transcendent relation between people in a dif-ferent light.

A real must-see during the Salone del Mobile!

Especially for this oc-casion the Moooi pres-entation will be inhabited and charac-terized by a number of colourful mannequins by

Hans Boodt. Combining 25 years of experience in visual merchandizing, creativity and know-how, the world-famous, high-quality mannequins of Hans Boodt never fail to make a great impres-sion with their strong charisma. They will make themselves at home at Moooi’s presentation, bringing an extra feel-ing of intimacy to the living quarters and re-sembling peoples’ per-sonality, style & taste. Real and surreal at the same time!

This year the exclusive Frame Moooi Award cere-mony, cocktail evening and panel discussion will also take place in via Savona 56. On the 10th of April a selected crowd of design professionals is invited to attend a unique cock-tail evening dedicated to the celebration of cre-ativity and design. De-sign curator Jana Schol-ze will crown the winner, who will receive a tempt-ing award of 25,000 €. Detailed information on the 9 shortlisted designs will be avail-able throughout the entire week of the Salone on artistic, informative panels at via Savona 56.

Are you looking for in-spiration? Would you like to admire all these crea-tions with your own eyes?

CREATING CHARACTERS.Creating a mannequin is to bring something “into life”. A lot of work has already been done before the first mannequin rolls of the production line. We would like to give you a bit of insight into the process flow of creating a character, so you can vis-ualize how big a project just 1 model actually is. Creating starts out with a concept, a sense, an idea…

20

Page 21: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

21

Page 22: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

After weeks and sometimes months of preparation, market research, the resources of our imagina-tion and careful focusing in on the end result, Hans Boodt captures this creation process into words, images, mood boards and technical specifications to form a briefing for Hans Boodt Studios.

The sculptor will start our design and together with his expertise and knowledge of materials and Hans Boodt’s vision, we will create a new model. During this process slight changes will still be possible to enhance the pose or to smoothen anatomical fea-tures.

CREATION AND BRIEFING SCULPTING

When the end result of the clay model is confirmed by Hans Boodt’s design department, the studio will cre-ate a prototype from clay model. The first mold will be made by the sculptor, to be send to our factories.

Production molds will be made from the Mastermold so quantities in production can be made. Every few hundred items a new production mold is made from the master mold to ensure the same quality.

PROTOTYPE AND MASTER MOLDING

Lamination is the process of applying several layers of glass fibre into different parts of the produc-tion. After this process and all the fittings have been concluded the mannequin will be put together.

LAMINATION3. 4.

23

Page 24: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

After the different parts of the mannequin have been put together, the production continues by sanding the mannequin. All the separate parts need to be exactly right so that they will have a smooth “fit”. The surface needs to be immaculate before the final treatment can commence.

Now the time has come to give the mannequin its final color, fabric, finish or make up. The goods need to dry completely before they are ready to be packed securely.

SANDINGFINAL TREATMENT5. 6.

24

Page 25: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

While the mannequins are drying in a dust free envi-ronment our Hans Boodt Quality Control takes place. Quality Control checks throughout the whole produc-tion process, but the essential control is the one at the end of the process; does the final product meet all Hans Boodt’s standards in all respects, does it answer clients special requirements etc.?

The goods need to be securely packed in cartons, Be-cause they are in for a long voyage at sea to any one destination somewhere on this globe. We make sure that when the mannequins are unpacked at their final destination they still look stunning!

SUPER FUTURE CONTESTRemember our super future contest last year?

In cooperation with Super Future, Hans Boodt Mannequins held a contest in April 2012. The question; “Ever wanted to immortalize yourself?” was answered by a great many readers of Super Future’s Web and all of Hans Boodt’s FB followers.

All of whom sent photos of themselves.

28

Page 29: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

WINNER ANGELOAfter some deliberation the jury decided on the pho-to of Angelo. The process of the clay model could be followed on Hans Boodt’s FB fanpage and finally we have a life size mannequin bearing the name Angelo.

The fun part; He lent us his jacket, shirt & bracelet, from the original picture he sent in to join the con-test, so we could do a photoshoot of the endresult! Not all famous celebrities have bad attitudes, they

can be friendly and helpful too;)

29

Page 30: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

30

Page 31: Hans Boodt Magazine 5th issue

You had to take a very creative picture of yourself, how did you to choose this particular pose? Actually it came to me right away, I didn’t really have to think too long about it. The next step was finding some cool clothes and then I just took the photos straight away. I took them in my parents’ garden. It was as simple as that. The pose I used, has been used by a lot of celebrities. Pretty uncomplicated, but I thought it was a pretty neat idea for a mannequin, I had certainly never seen it before!

The clothes you’re wearing are very colorful, how would you describe your clothing style?I’d say the clothes I wear are pretty much “out of the box”. You can find me wearing a dress shirt with Clarks one day and the next day I’ll be wearing a classic Air max or Nike Air Jordan with a nice Tee or something. This is exactly what I am! When somebody looks at me I want that somebody to think that I am a mix of different clothing styles, a bit of a hipster, a bit of a skater, a bit urban. I really think that a lot of guys are too involved in a certain hype (they may do this consciously or not), but by doing so they completely lose their own individuality. It is so much nicer to create your own unique style.

What does fashion mean to you?Fashion is a big part of my life, I spend a lot of time keeping up with the latest trends. On the other hand I just choose the kind of clothes I real-ly like. Especially shoes, I love all different kinds.I have been collecting sneakers (es-pecially Nikes and Jordan’s) for the last 5 to 6 years. When people hate a shoe and think it is really ugly, that’s when I say: “I want that one, just because it is so ugly”. I think that’s fantastic. You won’t see a lot of people wearing those shoes, that’s for sure. I hope to have my own web shop pretty soon, geared to the “Sneak-er scene”.

What was your first reaction when you heard that you’d won? Absolutely fantastic! I was flabber-gasted! I just loved the exciting way

in which the results were announced. Let me tell you a secret… I am really very proud that Hans Boodt has made a mannequin of me, me being a Dutch guy. This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportu-nity. I am just so lucky to have this happening to me. It’s totally bizarre! And I can definitely use the prize money to start the web shop I’ve been dream-ing of. I’m going to sell secondhand sneakers in my web shop. So I’m totally thrilled!

You had the opportunity to follow the complete process of making a manne-quin, starting from clayup to the final product. How did you like that? It was pretty strange to see myself being reborn! I had absolutely no clue how all this would be done. It was really cool to see it happen first hand. Now I have a twin brother for all eternity!

You are now completely immortalized! How do you like the end result? It’s actually kind of scary! He looks exactly like me. You guys did an amaz-ing job. To think that so many people were busy creating a mannequin which is my mirror imagine, it’s just too bizarre for words.

What does it feel like to have a twin brother and to have a photo taken of the two of you? I never really wanted to have a twin brother, kind of weird, the same thoughts, the same clothing style and things like that. But this, of course, is totally different. It’s all cool as long as he doesn’t move and isn’t too pigheaded, ha ha ! It feels really strange to be standing next to my “twin brother”. I’m sure this is something not too many people will ever experi-ence. It’s first-class!

If you could choose any place in the world, which shop window would be your absolute favorite? Really, I don’t care. I think it’s just so fantastic to be in a shop win-dow anywhere in the world. I would be very hard pressed if I had to make a choice. It would be great to be in a window and have people think: “that mannequin perfectly suits that brand in that store”, making me totally fit in the complete picture of the store. Thinking about seeing myself in a shop window just gives me goose bumps. It is just too cool!

AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR WINNER ANGELO FROM THE SUPER FUTURE CONTEST

“ The pose I used, has been used by a lot of celebrities. Pretty uncompli-cated, but I thought it was a pretty

neat idea for a mannequin ”

“ It’s actually kind of scary! He looks exactly like me ”

A romantic love story in Rotterdam.

Last night is WHEN we met, lightening struck, that’s HOW we met. We know that in this ever-chang-ing world experiences can be short or long lasting, deeply touching or just plain fun, here today and gone tomorrow or growing into wonderful bliss. But we don’t care about what happened yester-day or what will happen in the future, we care about the present cause we both have our whole lives ahead of us and the world at our feet.

We have the same taste in music, we share the same passion; fashion, art & literature. We love to visit stylish events, but we know our way at Wasteland as well. And we definitely loved our last night conversation, our future is bright our options are endless. So let’s make this moment worthwhile and get some human interaction along with the thunder and lightning we both felt when we looked into each other’s eyes!

These include, amongst others, Marcel Wanders, Jurgen Bey, Bertjan Pot, Maarten Baas, Jaime Hayon, Neri & Hu, Studio Job and Nika Zupanc. We have high-lighted 4 of them and let them tell their story of

MOOOI DESIGNERS.“Every expression is a statement.”

Founded in 2000 by Mr. & Mrs. Smeets, both gradu-ates of the Design Academy Eindhoven, now based in Antwerp and the Netherlands. They redefine the deco-rative arts for the contemporary age. Their collabo-ration has created highly expressive, mainly one-off or limited edition works, from the outset. Often cast in bronze or, later, crafted from laser-cut marquetry, the physical potential and malleability of the materials they use is pushed to the hilt. Their approach is more in keeping with that of tra-ditional guilds than anything industrial.

For Studio Job, creation is pre-eminent over defi-nition. Smeets describes it thus: “Unlike most, we are probably not coming from Modernism. Studio Job’s contribution is that we have rediscovered a lost path. Consciously and carefully, we are positioning decorative arts in the twenty-first century. Is that design? Whatever. Is that art? Whatever, really.” Opulent, intricate and ironic, Studio Job combine an extraordinarily high level of craftsmanship with extreme ornamentation. They reference both the tra-ditional and the topical, the organic and the arti-ficial. This narrative conveys a tension between the good and the bad exploring all facets of each. Their iconography is at once heraldic and cartoon-like, monumental and yet somehow primitive. Due to this combination of elements, Studio Job’s

style has become synonymous with the term ‘neo-goth-ic’. This style is placed within an enigmatic, in-tellectual framework by the number and complexity of symbols and signifiers it conveys. Studio Job’s work is widely collected both in the private and public sectors. Although, by definition, their work has pri-marily been geared towards collectors and museums, Studio Job has collaborated successfully with vari-ous likeminded brands eg. Bulgari, Swarovski, Bisaz-za, Venini, Land Rover, Viktor & Rolf and Moooi. There have been solo exhibitions in eg New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Milan, Geneva, Miami and Basel.

Today, Studio Job designs are in collection of more than 40 museums worldwide. In 2009 Nynke and Job opened Studio Job Gallery, a curatorial exhibition space for contemporary art and design based in Ant-werp. In 2010 an important monograph titled The Book of Job’ was launched by the New York publish-ing house Rizzoli. In 2011, Nynke and Job turned a post war villa into Studio Job House filled with modernistic icons and contemporary pieces. In 2012 they designed and opened the Studio Job Lounge in-side the prestigious Groninger Museum. The Groninger recently dedicated a massive retrospective accompa-nied by a new book to celibrate the large body of work of these world famous creators!

MOOOI DESIGNER.“Design is too complex for one liners.”

BERTJAN POT is a designer, proba-bly best known for his Random Light (1999). The light started as a material experiment, which is basically the start of each product created by Stu-dio Bertjan Pot. The outcome is usu-ally an interior product showing a fascination for techniques, struc-tures, patterns and colors.

Most experiments start quite impul-sively by a certain curiosity for how things would function or how some-thing would look. From there Bertjan takes on challenges with manufacturers to explore possibilities and push the boundaries a bit. The reward for each challenge is a new one. Studio Bertjan Pot works with manu-facturers such as Arco, Established & Sons, Feld, Gelderland, Montis, Moooi and Richard Lampert.

MOOOI DESIGNERS.

Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Anna Lindgren are the members of the Swedish design group Front.

Their works are based on common discussions, explorations and experiments and they are all involved in the projects from initial ideas to the final product. Front’s design objects often communicate a story to the observer about the design process, about the material

it is made of or about conventions within the design field. In their work they have assigned part of the making of design to animals, com-puters or machines. They have made a constant-ly changing interior, created objects with explosions, robotic furniture and a range of furniture inspired by their fascination with magic.

LONDON CALLING

Just like Milan, UK’s capitol is one of the leading capitols in the world of fashion. London Fashion Week took place right after New York Fashion Week in

February 2013.

As in the past, London has always been a very important city inspired by the latest trend in fashion and design.Hans Boodt Mannequins is, of course, interested in what is shown on the catwalk, but what really provides us with the best ideas and stirs our imagination, are the streets & its people, the shopwindows, the decoration used, the settings created, the indoor

atmosphere, the prevalent colors in shop fitting, new gadgets or new innovative ways to present merchandise, the use of in- and out- door signing and what music is being played in the stores to attract their target group?

So, once again, we created a collection of impressions for you from our last London visit in February 2013.
