holidays, but also that the serious themes as represented by the rituals of the festivals are perhaps best engaged in adult exploration of Judaism. Then there is the matter of modeling that even without children at home still being able to share with adult children or grand-children that we lit the hanukkiyah and that the rituals are a beloved part of our Jewish practice. When we celebrate holidays with young children we tend to focus on the rituals that would engage them, and providing warm family memories to add to their treasure trove of Jewish experience. As adults, either without children or with children out of the house we have the opportunity to engage with Hanukkah on a more adult level. So if you really want to skip spinning the dreydels this year go ahead, but light the can-dles or the oil to illuminate your own adult practice and study of our tradition.

achshav twice BlessedEvery person on the inaugural Achshav trip to Israel in the winter of 2014 felt extremely lucky and privileged to spend two weeks with the phenomenal, unbelievably dynamic, and theatrical tour guide, Betsalel Steinhart. Betsalel has the unique ability to bring times and places, ancient and modern, to life. His talks are educational and entertaining, personal and relevant, all at the same time. He managed to instill in the students not only a deep interest in and love for Israel, but an appreciation for Jewish

history and the Bible. Many of the Achshav students came closer to finding their places in our Jewish story because of Betsalel’s masterful teaching and challenging personal questions.

Due to a generous grant from the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Fund for the Enrichment of Jewish Education, we are twice blessed, to have Betsalel visit Chizuk Amuno and Beth El (who jointly collaborated on the Achshav High School Leadership Project) as an Educator- In- Residence from Tuesday, December 1st through Monday, December 7th. Betsalel will work with the Achshav faculty on curriculum development and meet with our 7th through 9th grade classes to get them excited about their Achshav trips to Israel. He will also teach in our KSDS Middle School and guide Chizuk Amuno and Beth El parents and students through virtual Israel at defining moments in Jewish history. Our 2013 Achshav students are thrilled to have this chance to reunite with Betsalel during his stay here.

Here are the names of the extraordinary Achshav students who graduated from Rosenbloom Religious School who are beginning the Achshav program this fall, and those who are continuing into their third year: Cole Abel, Sara Berman, Rachel Blavatt, Noam Fox, Danielle Garten, Arenal Haut, Max Holzman, Seth Hudes, Rachel Kaplan, Jessica Karmiol, Ryan Platt, Eden Silver, Aaron Sterling, Hannah Stone, Spencer Wachs, Aaron Zaiman, Eliana Abel, Sarah Karmiol, Katelyn Flaks, Ethan Harrison, Zachary Laporte, Lorin Losin, Lexi Silverman, Ethan Schwartz and Mackenzie Wachs.

The Achshav program has succeeded beyond Chizuk Amuno and Beth El’s wildest dreams. With Betsalel’s upcoming visit, the success will surely continue.

Betsalel Steinhart, the Director of Jewish and Israel Studies on Tichon Ramah Yerushalayim (Ramah Israel’s High School in Israel Program) is their tour guide in Israel.

tips to the Support Staff holiday gift Fund Chizuk Amuno Congregation is fortunate to have a wonderful, dedicated maintenance, clerical, administrative, and support staff, who ensure that the synagogue and schools run well, that the building is set as needed, who care deeply about our children, students, members, and friends and help us achieve the mission and goals of the congregation.

Several years ago, the synagogue adopted a policy of no tipping to individual staff members following events or programs. Some support staff members are more visible than others, but it takes all of them to prepare. In lieu of tipping, the congregation has created a Staff Holiday Gift Fund, which is divided equally among our support staff every December. We appreciate those who contribute to the holiday gift fund to our staff members in honor of their good work during the High Holy Days and throughout the year.

are often asked what we need and what would enhance one of our schools, programs, services, or our

programs.

The following is a partial list of some suggestions compiled by our schools and leadership, but don’t

hesitate to suggest additional, creative ways to enhance our congregation and community. The full list

can be found on our website here www.chizukamuno.org/giving/wishlist. Wish List contributors will
