Even though it’s August, a new Jewish year is soon upon us. As summer wanes, we know some of this year’s troubles, and certainly its

headlines, will carry over into the new one. Anticipating the future we want to focus more on our hopes than our concerns. It’s time for a fresh start and a new chance. A New Year presents us a calendar with no days yet marked off or lived as they still might be.

Our apprehensions and challenges are real every day. Even so, as we anticipate what comes next in a worried world, we want to be optimistic. We want to be realistic and positive. During the High Holy Days we find uplift

and encouragement. Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot remind us to look forward with renewed purpose and encourage us to imagine what’s possible.

Days. During our New Shabbat service on August 9 in song and conversation we’ll celebrate with a happy and upbeat spirit. Before and during our Selihot Service on August 31, we’ll discover the “holiness of hope,” the optimistic spirit

of Judaism. Soon thereafter, early as it will seem, summer will end and the New Year will begin.

You Are Invited to Join Our Shalom Squad!Everyone who comes to Chizuk Amuno on Shabbat and holidays should leave feeling that Chizuk Amuno is a special community, one that goes out of its way to embrace visitors and members alike. We need your help.

Chizuk Amuno is your second home. We are expanding our Hakhnasat Orhim program – Welcoming Visitors. Join our new Shalom Squad! Be a greeter or a host. We are assembling a corps of members to welcome those new to Chizuk Amuno, and, of course, to welcome those who have been here all along. A friendly face, a help with page numbers, a personal touch. You can do this!

For details, please contact Sheila Sandbank, [email protected] or 410/484-5016, or Fran Glushakow Gould, [email protected]. We anticipate that our Shalom Squad participants will be called upon two or three times per year, with occasional luncheon meetings after services. Our opening luncheon meeting will be on August 10 right after the Shabbat morning service, when we will explain what our greeters and/or hosts on the Shalom Squad will be doing.

We look forward to joining with you in this wonderful mitzvah!

Support the State of Israel 5774 High Holy Days Israel Bonds Campaign at Chizuk Amuno CongregationThe work of Israel Bonds lay-leaders along with the purchases of millions of dollars of Israel Bonds over the years has been vital in building Israel into the modern sophisticated country she is today.

Participating in an Israel Bonds High Holy Days Campaign means you stand beside a nation that sends a field hospital to Haiti (earthquake) and Japan (tsunami) immediately and helps to invent a missile defense system (Iron Dome) to protect Israeli citizens from terrorist rocket attacks. It means you support a country that is constantly unveiling innovations like a window that doubles as a solar energy collector, a bionic retina that dramatically corrects vision impairments, or a no-hands pressure bandage that saves lives and limbs on the battlefield.

Sheila Sandbank will be chairing Chizuk Amuno’s Israel Bonds appeal again this year. During the High Holy Day Campaign, please join members of hundreds of congregations around the country by purchasing an Israel Bond to show your support and love for Israel. Once again, Hopkins Federal Savings Bank and THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore are partnering to make a 100% match on all Israel Bonds purchased during the High Holy Days appeal throughout the entire Baltimore community.
