This Thursday we celebrate the Feast of the

Assump on of Mary. We would be remiss to

speak of anything or anyone other than our

Blessed Mother. She is a model of discipleship,

a great model for our parish.

Mary is open to God’s will. Unlike many of us, Mary did not

say, “Who me?” “Why me?” “What will people think or say?”

Instead, Mary said yes. She realized that she was being called

by God to use the gi s that had been given to her. She recog-

nized her power to help God’s reign on earth by bearing his

Son. She trusted God completely. She was open to God’s will

no ma er what price she might have to pay. We, as disciples,

must become “yes people” like Mary.

Mary is Christ‐bearer to the world. Whether during her visit

to Elizabeth, at the Wedding Feast of Cana, or even at the

Crucifixion, Mary bore Christ to the world in mes of joy and

in mes of sorrow. We are also called to be bearers of Christ.

Orthodox Chris ans call Mary ‘Theotokos,’ which is Greek for

‘God‐Bearer’. This is the mission of every Chris an and Mary

is our best example. Whether it is by me, talent or treasure,

we are called to bring Christ to the world.

Mary  models  leadership  that  is  a en ve  to  the  needs  of

others. At the Wedding Feast at Cana, Mary was concerned

about the guests and the wedded couple. It would have been

a great embarrassment for the couple to have run out of wine

at their reception (even though the party may have lasted days.)

Mary, in her compassion, wanted to do her best, through her

Son, in her sensi vity to the needs of others. She intervened

on behalf of ordinary people. She did not shrink from taking

responsibility; she asks her Son to step in and take ac on. We

are also called to be leaders who not only show compassion,

but, who also do not shrink from performing what Christ calls

us to perform in His Name. We are called to be His hands,

feet, and eyes in this world.

Mary is the perfect model of vibrant spirituality for all disciples.

In several places, especially in the Gospel of Luke it is said:

“Mary kept all these things, reflec ng on them in her heart.”

It is so important that we ponder the circumstances of our lives

and discern how the Lord is present to us and how he is calling

us to respond in the present moment to that call.

Jesus makes a curious statement about his ‘family’ in Mark’s

Gospel (3:31-35) when the crowd told him: “Your mother and

brothers are outside asking for you.” Jesus responds, “Here

are my mother and my brothers. [For] whoever does the will

of God is my brother and sister and mother.” This is by no

means an insult to the Blessed Mother. It is a great compliment

because she is the first of the disciples to do the will of God.

This week, ponder the life of Mary, the Mother of our

Church, and the model for all of us as disciples of the risen

Christ. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!

Deacon Steve

Reconnect with Jesus Christ * Refresh your spirit * Renew your Catholic faith

I personally invite you to experience the Parish Renewal Weekend Retreat. This journey opened my heart to see what I was missing as part of this community. I was coming to church but never even a empted to say hello to the parishioner across pews or even next to me. We are a community — a family — a Church, yet we don’t know each other. A er the Renewal Retreat, I got involved with the Sunday Hospitality Ministry, which provided the space for me to meet even more awesome parishioners and to encourage others to do the same. It all came from the Renewal Retreat. Your journey may be different but it will enrich you. I can truly say that. I hope to see you at September’s retreat.

What comes first?

A firestorm is coming, and you need to consider what goes in the truck, what you pack into your car, and

what you can afford to leave behind. What do you take with you, and what gets le behind?

Mind-numbing decisions are never easy — even with experience. We have experienced dozens of wild

fires, flooding downpours, earthquakes and the varie es of damage that a end them. We’ve been decid-

ing what goes and what stays for genera ons although it seems like an original crisis each me. Since the

me of St. Junipero Serra, California Catholics have been asking, “What is most important? What is worth my life?” Jesus

encouraged us all to ask.

“ ‘Do not be afraid any longer, li le flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give

alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaus ble treasure in heaven that no thief can reach

nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be’ ” (Luke 12:32-34).

Las ng treasure is worth hanging on to, inves ng it, placing first. To what degree are we thinking of the eternal when we

pack our vehicles? What’s more, we wisely wait — not on next unse ling disaster — but upon the return of the Lord

himself. That expecta on focuses our inten ons and our ac ons. “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like serv‐

ants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are

those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.’ ” (Luke 12:35-38).

We do not know when Jesus will return, any more than we know what extreme weather will bring! While we watch and

wait upon the Lord, Chris an stewards study, pray, serve, and give. And, when it’s me to go, what will we take with us?

Every step we have taken towards the eternal. What legacy will we leave behind? Our investments that con nue to bring

about hope in the eternal.

As followers of Christ, as the Catholic faithful, we place the eternal first and that eternal focus shapes our decisions about

living. God has blessed us with many treasures, but the most precious, the most las ng, the most valuable are those that

direct our hearts to rest in Him, trus ng and believing God holds us close, now and forever.

Our legacy must speak of this faith. What will your legacy be?

An example of giving First Fruits: Henry earns $52,000 per year.

He donates a total of 5% ($2,600) in gra tude to God in this way…

50% = $1,300 to Sunday Offertory; $25/week = 1 hour of Henry’s pay

10% = $ 260 to the DDF; $ 5/week

40% = $1,040 to figh ng cancer, funding educa on ini a ves, caring for

the environment, families, children, seniors; $20/week

Altogether, Henry gives $50 weekly in gra tude = $2,600 per year.

$25 — His FIRST HOUR of LABOR is given to the Lord in the Sunday Offertory.

How will your $25 or $50 fulfill God’s mission this week?

FIRST FRUITS

PRIMEROS FRUTOS

Do your spending habits reflect your faith? Are you giving the same amount as last year or the year before?

It costs an average of $ 26,565 to maintain our parish every week: maintenance, salaries, liturgy, forma on, and ministry

supplies. This amount does not include ANY new developments — no new classes, outreach efforts, evangelizing, welcom-

ing… The gi s we offer at the altar every week fund our parish community’s efforts to fulfill God’s mission in Redlands. It is

me to move our giving focus from maintenance to mission.

So… When was the last me you reviewed your offering? When was the last me you gave God a raise?

“I invite all Chris ans, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to le ng him encounter them.”

“Invito a cada cris ano, en cualquier lugar y situación en que se encuentre, a renovar ahora mismo su encuentro personal con Jesucristo o, al menos, a tomar la decisión de dejarse encontrar por Él, de intentarlo cada día sin descanso.”

Laudato Si’! Caring for God’s Creation

“…we took to heart the Holy Father's guidelines in 'Laudato Si'.' Our common home needs safeguarding,” said Rafael Ignacio Tornini, announcing that soon Vatican City will no longer be selling any single-use plastic items on its territory. -National Catholic Reporter, July 16, 2019 What’s the big deal about plastic? Just one of the many consequences of plastic packaging – about 8 million tons of it escapes into the oceans from coastal nations every year. That’s the equivalent of setting five full garbage bags on every foot of coastline around the world.

Can you help reduce plastic waste by making your home, school and office single-use plastic free, like Vatican City will be soon? What if California were single-use plastic free? Would our parks and beaches would look better; would our plants, animals and people be healthier?

Creation Care Idea of the week: Switch from plastic wrap and bags to re-usable containers for food storage. Or wrap foods in wax paper, which generally decomposes in only 2 – 6 weeks in landfills. (Plastic bags last anywhere from 10 – 1000 years, scientists really don’t know) Check this website for more ways to keep God’s earth green and His oceans blue for future generations: www. lessp las t ic .co .uk/

How do you suggest reducing use of plastics? Write to Marilyn and Anne: HolyNameLS@out look .com

Why do we fill up the seats in church from the back to the front?   Maybe it’s piety: We sit in the back because, aware of

our many failings, we don’t feel worthy to draw near. Maybe it’s culture: We sit in the back because our mothers taught us

never to claim the best seats or make ourselves the center of attention. Maybe it’s selfish: We want to be able to skip out

early. Whatever the reason, it causes a prac cal problem: The front seats are always empty, crea ng a gulf between the

Lord’s table and the Lord’s people. And latecomers stand in the back rather than march up to the front where everyone can

see that they’re late.

Let’s show some hospitality here! Let’s fill the church up from the front to the back, leaving the back rows for those who

come later or late. And let’s fill each row from the center: If you’re the first one in a row, don’t hug the end (unless you’re a

minister and will need to get in and out). Move into the middle so that others may come and sit beside you.

Filling in the front seats first isn’t proud or arrogant. It’s part of the ministry of

hospitality that all of us who are bap zed are called to exercise. It’s a simple act

of kindness that helps the church to gather be er around its Lord, so that we

may give God thanks and praise. © 2009 World Library Publica ons

We often talk about the need of good Catholic families. What if we invest and accompany them when they are young?

BELOVED is a conference for young couples (18-39) who are seriously dating, engaged, or married. Single young people are also invited to attend since some of the workshops offered have content that can benefit them in their discernment to marriage life.
