Advent begins next weekend. We will begin Year

A of the 3-year liturgical cycle and shift to the Gos-

pel of Matthew. Interestingly, before the Second

Va can Council, Ma hew was almost the exclu-

sive Gospel read at Mass on Sundays. Back then,

there was not a three year rota on (A, B, C). Since we will be

reading and praying this Gospel (with some excep ons) during

the next liturgical year, it would be worth our me to further

explore this Gospel.

Most scripture scholars deny that this Gospel was wri en by

the apostle Ma hew. In the ancient world, it was considered a

tribute to name an author to a work who was authorita ve or

famous. That would not go over today. Since ‘Ma hew’ is

par ally taken from Mark’s Gospel and other sources and likely

not wri en before approximately 80 A.D., which was probably

20 years a er the apostle Ma hew’s death, authorship by the

apostle is unlikely.

When reading the Gospel of Ma hew, we can envision the

make-up of the community for which it was written. Like Moses,

Jesus’ infancy was in jeopardy from Herod just as Moses’ was

from pharaoh. Like Moses, Jesus came out of Egypt (a er the

flight into Egypt); and like Moses, Jesus went up the mountain

(Sermon on the Mount). Unlike Moses, Jesus did not ascend

the mountain to receive the law; but rather, to present or

preach the ‘law’ in his most famous sermon of this Gospel —

the bea tudes — where the ‘law’ is applied to Chris an life.

Ma hew’s community was primarily made up of converted

Jews. They were trying to know and love Jesus from this per-

spec ve. A er the destruc on of the temple in Jerusalem, their

whole lives had been overturned, especially when the Romans

expelled them from Jerusalem. Previously, they had been able

to worship Christ in a Jewish context, a ending temple and

therea er celebra ng ‘The Breaking of the Bread’ (mass).

Matthew’s Gospel is most like a catechism of the four Gospels;

and  more  than  in  any  other  Gospel,  Jesus  is  addressed  as

‘Teacher.’ A great deal of the teaching in Matthew is about ‘The

Kingdom of God.’ In Jesus, God has come to establish his King-

dom of love and mercy. God cares about the human race and

wants to make his loving presence manifest to his people. This

is the ‘hidden treasure’ and the ‘pearl of great price’ which is

revealed to us in Jesus. He wants his children to respond with

total acceptance.

Ma hew wants us to see the Kingdom coming in Jesus. He is

Emmanuel, ‘God with us’. His miracles and his words are the

irresis ble power of this Kingdom. Not only do his ac ons over-

come evil; his words issue God’s challenge to the world to accept

His divine gi .

Ma hew is not only the Gospel of the Kingdom, it is also the

Gospel of the Church. It is the only Gospel that uses the word

‘Church.’ Built on Peter and led by him and the 12, the life of

the new community is to display the lowliness, the service, and

the forgiveness that together characterize the Kingdom. This

Church is then, as noted at the end of Ma hew, charged with a

mission: to go out to all na ons and help all to experience the

dynamic love of God, the reality of the Kingdom of God. This

Church is to share in the mission of Jesus who assures his

disciples that he will be with them, even to the end of me.

I can hardly wait for next weekend’s readings!

semana!

Who is your King? 4

FIRST FRUITS

PRIMEROS FRUTOS

Thank you for funding the mission of the Church.

From June 2018 to July 2019,

your gi s made it possible to transform these lives:

My husband, Sco , o en tells me that the world is not the Catholic way I see it. He knows because he grew

up without ANY faith or anyone even talking about God.

In 1998, Sco was bap zed — one of the 68 adults bap zed at St. Monica’s that year. He was 34 years old,

and he says this was the best day of his life! (Marrying me was the second best, and I’m okay with that.)

Sco reminds me that Bap sm changed him and that he views the world very differently today… because Christ is his King.

The feast of Christ the King was ins tuted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, at a me when the world was experiencing a rise of sec-

ularism, materialism and individualism, and an increasing denial of Christ’s existence and authority. As Chris an stewards,

today’s feast reminds us of three vital truths:

First, when it seems the world is spinning out of control, we need not fear because we have a King of kings

who is very much in charge and who is loving, merciful and just!

Second, if Christ is king of all, then He is also king of me, personally. I am not “lord” of my me, talents,

and treasure. He is. I am a servant of the King and a steward of His gi s to me.

Third, as His disciple, I am called to imitate my King. Christ’s kingship is characterized by humble service,

by emptying Himself for the good of others. Jesus says of Himself, “I came not to be served but to

serve.” How can I live in any other way than as a humble servant like my King?

Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe, chose to endure betrayal, torture, revilement, and death because, as St Paul says,

“the Father… has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” You and I are made for union with Him.

This is the Good News that overcame the world’s false messages for Sco . Twenty-one years ago, his Catholic community

welcomed him to ask ques ons about the Catholic faith at R.C.I.A., like we welcome the adults seeking answers at Holy

Name of Jesus. Twenty-one years ago, Sco joined the Body of Christ through Bap sm, Confirma on, and Eucharist. In

thanksgiving, we offer the First Fruits of our Treasure to support our parish’s efforts to welcome and form adults like Sco ,

as well as children and their families. Together, we build Christ’s Kingdom on earth… transforming one soul at a me.

Pray + Serve + Give your First Fruits— in the Holy Name of Jesus, our King!

Laudato Si’! Caring for God’s Creation

“Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell in it; let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy.”

(Sirach 35).

In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis calls for ecological education, noting that “Only by cultivating sound virtues will people be able to make a selfless ecological commitment. A person who could afford to spend and consume more but regularly uses less heating and wears warmer clothes, shows the kind of convictions and attitudes which help to pro-tect the environment. There is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions, and it is wonderful how education can bring about real changes in lifestyle.” (LS: 211).

Creation Care Idea of the Week: Did you know that there are several Catholic non-profit organizations dedicated to environ-mental education and action?

Reflection: How are sound ecological virtues developed and passed along? Are there ways I can help to spread the important ideas found in Laudato Si’ to my Catholic and non-Catholic friends? Want to help our parish with a Laudato Sí Ministry? Write to Marilyn and Anne: HolyNameLS@out look .com
