A child went to his mother and asked her where
they came from. She answered, “Adam and Eve.”
A short me later the boy asked the same ques-
on of his father and he responded, “… from
monkeys and apes.” The boy, confused went to
his mother a second me and voiced his confusion. Then his
mother said that this was easy to explain. She said, “You see, I
was talking only about my side of the family, while your father
was speaking only of his.”
Perhaps nowhere in the study of scripture have believers come
closer to blows (or actual blows) than on the issue of crea on.
The Scopes trial, for example, is legendary in the annals of U.S.
history on the issue of teaching crea onism versus evolu on in
public schools. We now accept this in religious circles as the
ba le between crea onism and intelligent design.
Crea onists believe that crea on occurred exactly as recorded
in the Book of Genesis. Crea onism began to be ques oned
during the rise of science in the 19th century. This is not to men-
tion that there are two creation stories in Genesis (chapters
one and two) which conflict in some ways.
Intelligent design is the concept that the origin of the universe
and living things are best explained by an ‘intelligent cause.’
Intelligent design, like crea onism, previously, lost the ba le to
be taught in schools and was described as a “…mere re-labeling
of crea onism and not a scien fic theory.” Since the advent of
scripture study in our Church, Roman Catholic scholars and
theologians have witnessed against crea onism and the funda-
mentalist understanding of intelligent design. We do believe
that God created the universe and everything in it. Perhaps we
can say that science gives us hints as to how God actually
accomplished crea on. Is the ‘big-bang theory’ contrary to a
God-authored universe? Absolutely not!
As we said last week, the Bible is not a scien fic document; it is
a document of faith. As St. Pope John Paul II said in 1981, “The
Bible itself speaks to us of the origin of the universe and its
make-up, not in order to provide us with a scien fic trea se but
in order to state the correct rela onships of man with God and
with the universe. Sacred Scripture wishes simply to declare
that the world was created by God, and in order to teach this
truth it expresses itself in terms of the cosmology in use at the
me of the writer. Any other teaching about the origin and
make-up of the universe is alien to the inten ons of the Bible,
which does not wish to teach how the heavens were made but
how one goes to heaven.”
As a Church, we believe that God’s crea on of the universe is
not an the cal to evolu on. Pope Benedict explained in 2007:
“{Evolu on and crea onism} are presented as alterna ves that
exclude each-other. This clash is an absurdity because on the
one hand there is much scien fic proof in favor of evolu on,
which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches
our understanding of life and being and such.” Therefore, we
can say that in crea on, God gives life, overcomes chaos and
fashions, through skilled ac vity or by word of command, a
good world. “God looked at everything he had made, and he
found it very good.” (Gen. 1:31a)
There was an Adam (translated ‘man’) and an Eve (translated
‘living one’), at least in a figura ve sense. God fashioned
humanity and found it to be very good. When the Book of
Genesis was wri en in about 800 BCE*, there was no under-
standing of gene cs, biology nor science. This was the way in
which crea on was understood, perhaps pu ng in wri ng
what had been orally transmi ed over centuries.
There is no necessary conflict between science and religion.
Each is speaking in a language that is non‐contradictory. Each
is looking at the world through different perspec ves.
As Catholic Chris ans we do not approach scripture to “proof
text.” A proof text is a verse or short passage from the Bible
used by someone as part of their proof for a doctrinal belief
they wish to substan ate to others. Using scripture without
though ul considera on of the verse’s meaning as understood
within a greater context is not helpful. Reading a verse here or
there or using a verse to prove your teaching point is not a
Catholic approach and it may do more harm than good. Context
is everything!
Blessings, Deacon Steve
*the terms BCE and CE are used in deference to our Jewish broth-
ers and sisters. For them, there is no “OLD” testament. There is
only their testament. Christ is not someone who they consider
divine. BCE is short for Before Common Era. It is used in place of
BC meaning Before Christ. CE is short for Common Era, which
begins with year 1 in the Gregorian calendar. CE is used in place
of AD, short for Anno Domini, the Latin term for year of the Lord.

¡Absolutamente no!
do oralmente durante siglos.
no contradictorios.

Grateful for a few of my favorite things... 4
“Girls in white dresses with new satin sashes; Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes; Silver white
Winters that melt into Spring… These are a few of my favorite things!” -Sound of Music
When I was a girl, we sang along with Julie Andrews and the Von Trapp children in the film, Sound of Music,
every year… and I LOVED how the terrified kids ran into their governess’s room in the midst of booming
thunder and were comforted with hugs, dancing, and singing about their favorite things! As the kids named
things like crisp apple strudels, raindrops on roses, brown paper packages tied up with string, and telegrams, we started
naming our favorite things, too: mac-n-cheese, riding bikes, baseball games, slip-n-slides, bedtime stories, hugs, best friends.
Gratitude is an attitude that is SO IMPORTANT for us Christian disciples to cultivate. It is the key to a stewardship way of
life because gratitude leads us to worship God, who gives us life and offers us everything - including salvation.
Today’s Gospel displays the POWER of gratitude. “And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned.”
Only one of the 10 healed lepers recognized the tremendous blessing he had received from Jesus, and returned to thank
Him. I admit that it’s easy to feel indignant at the failure of the other nine to return… at least until I realize that I have often
failed to recognize the blessings, the answered prayers, and the healings (both physical and spiritual), that the Lord has
showered upon me day and night.
But, focusing on failure is like hiding under the blankets in fear while the other Von Trapp children are
dancing and singing amidst the thunderstorm. We can get so caught up in the stresses and distractions of
daily life that we lose touch with this truth: Our very lives and every breath we take are God’s gift to us.
And, He loves us so much that He wants us to be with Him forever.
THAT is worth celebrating!
The cured Samaritan leper reacts to his gift with the proper response. Recognizing what he had just received from the
Lord, he FIRST “returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked Him.” His gratitude led
him to first worship God. .. A God that was previously unknown to Him.
And because of this response, Jesus offered him a far more precious gift than physical healing: the gift of salvation.
Jesus says, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”
At the conclusion of every Mass, we are sent forth with the power of Word and Eucharist to share ourselves with oth‐
ers… to become living Gospels. Become a living Gospel by counting your blessings! Name them. Share them. Help others
who are struggling to see their blessings. And, praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Laudato Si’! Caring for God’s Creation
“Creation is of the order of love. God’s love is the fundamental moving force in all created things: ‘For you love all things that exist, and detest none of the things that you have made; for you would not have made anything if you had hated it’ (Wisdom 11:24). Every creature is thus the object of the Father’s tenderness, who gives it its place in the world. Even the fleeting life of the least of beings is the object of his love, and in its few seconds of existence, God enfolds it with his affection.” (Laudato Si’, 77)
Creation Care Idea of the Week: It’s estimated that each American household receives more than 40 pounds of unsolicited mail per year (the equivalent of 100 million trees!). Further, that less than 44% of it is opened, and less than 22% recycled.
If you find you don’t need so much of what you’re receiving, you can reduce the volume by following tips published by Eco-Cycle at this website: w w w . e c o c y c l e . o r g / j u n k m a i l
Reflect: Aside from unsolicited mail, are there other occasions when people offer me things I haven’t asked for and don’t need? Can learning to politely say no help me to care for and love all of God’s creatures, the way He does?
