Next Saturday, July 20th, we celebrate the

50th Anniversary of the “Eagle’s” landing on

the moon. We will hear over and over those

thrilling words of Neil Armstrong, “That’s

one small step for man, and one giant leap

for mankind.”

In 1969, those words united a world and gave us a vision

of new possibili es for our planet. The words of Jesus in

today’s Gospel are far more empowering, as He answers

the ques on of the lawyer, “What must I do to inherit

everlas ng life?” The answer we know by heart:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

and with all your soul, and with all your strength,

and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

The power of love brings us to life, for it is love alone that

affects us in heart, soul, emo ons, strength of mind and

will. Love demands our all. To love is to live. To love God

is the beginning of life. The ancient book The Cloud of

Unknowing states: “Love is such a power that it unites all

things. Therefore love Jesus, and then everything that He

has will be yours.”

The lawyer in the Gospel took this one step farther and

found out that love for God always leads to love for one’s

fellow human beings. He asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”

Jesus responded with the story of the Good Samaritan,

and commanded us to “Go and do the same.”

Are these radical words for our mes? When we follow

Christ’s commands, we create meaningful leaps for our

world, much more so than the historic moon landing,

because our ultimate goal surpasses the moon; it is eternal

life. When our clergy send us forth from each Mass, they

echo Christ’s words in today’s Gospel: “go in peace to love

and serve the Lord; or “go and glorify the Lord by your

lives”. In other words, take a step and “Go and do the

same!” - Deacon Steve

El an guo libro

Reconnect with Jesus Christ * Refresh your spirit * Renew your Catholic faith

I personally invite you to experience the Parish Renewal Retreat. This journey opened my heart to see what I was missing as part of this community. I was coming to church but never even attempted to say hello to the parishioner across pews or even next to me. We are a community / family, yet we don’t know each other.

After the Renewal Retreat, Hospitality Ministry then provided the space for me to meet even more awesome parishioners and encourage others to do the same. It all came from the Renewal Retreat. Your journey may be different but it will enrich you. I can truly say that. I hope to see you at September’s retreat. -Bertha Shotwell

I’m Eddie  Valdez,  2019 graduate of the UC River-side. I have joined “FOCUS— the Fellowship of Catholic University Students". Our mission re-sponds to a real Church crisis. It is a fact that 80% of high school seniors who enter a university as prac cing Catholics leave the Church before gradu-a ng. This has had an incredibly nega ve impact in family and parish life, the Church, and the world as a whole. I want to do something about that. That’s why I joined FOCUS.

FOCUS sends post-graduate men and women to college campuses to be full me missionaries and evangelizers. In leading bible studies, taking students on mission trips, and pu ng on retreats, we invite them to have a personal relationship with Jesus and the Catholic Church. We encourage them to live fully authen c Catholic lives while in col-lege and beyond.

In August, I will relocate to Texas A&M University to begin a year of missionary work on campus. In order to serve as a full-time mission-ary, I am required to fully fundraise my salary, particularly from the faithful men and women in my home community. We create mission support teams of people that are willing to partner with us financially and in prayer. We ask for monthly support; with the complete under-standing that everyone's finances are different. Some are able to give $50 a month, while others can give $500. All we ask is that you prayerfully ask the Lord how He is specifically asking you to help.

Please come and talk to me a er Mass this weekend.

Please visit my mission page: www.focus.org/goto/eddievaldez There’s detailed informa on about what I will do at Texas A&M, and a short 3-minute video that explains the need and the FOCUS mis-sion really well. Join my support team by clicking the "support eddie" bu on, and please pray for me. Thank you!

Opportunities or Loopholes?

Last week, I wrote about my family’s journey from Oklahoma to California along Route 66. During the

dust bowl era, Great-Grandpa Cecil searched for work with his wife and boys in tow. Water was scarce.

Fried bologna sandwiches were a treat. The jalopy needed cranking and regular re-patching. Yet, these

Okie Callons joyfully sang “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” and worked together to make the most of

their God-given opportunities. They also placed great faith in the kindness of strangers, like the merchants

who extended credit for bread and nonfat powdered milk and the ranchers who allowed them to bunk in barns. Great-

Grandpa Cecil often reminded us of the importance of seeing opportunities to help people in need like the Good Samaritan.

The Good Samaritan demonstrates what stewardship in ac on looks like; in fact, he could be called the Good Steward!

He is aware of the needs of those around him and responds generously, unlike the others who brush past the man on the

side of the road. Because the Good Samaritan prac ces a hospitable way of looking at the world around him, he is

“moved with compassion at the sight” of the man, in the same way Christ is moved with compassion to heal each of us.

But, the Gospel’s legal scholar views the world through a different lens, doesn’t he? Instead of accep ng Christ’s answer

which is the fullness of the law, the scholar looks for the LIMITS of God’s commandments. As he asks, “And just how

would you define ’neighbor’?”, you can visualize the LOOPHOLE he seeks to avoid doing more. The story of the Good Sa-

maritan demonstrates how we can easily limit ourselves with distorted lenses based in our own needs.

The Good Samaritan disrupted his life to care for the man who was hurt. He set aside his own schedule and plans, and

even commits to returning to check on the man later (TIME). He cleans and bandages the man’s wounds, li s him onto a

donkey, and provides him with shelter (TALENTS). He pays the innkeeper to house and care for him (TREASURE).

THIS is how we Catholic Chris ans live out God’s commandments. This is how good stewards act when we come upon

neighbors in need... and our neighbors include everyone. My family encountered suspicious people who refused to help

them as well as Good Samaritans on Route 66. O en people visi ng Holy Name of Jesus are welcomed on Sunday. But,

some mes those regular welcomers and hospitality ministers are out of town or taking

care of family… and those who visit us are NOT welcomed or even greeted. Some mes,

there isn’t an opportunity to get to know visitors over coffee a er Mass because 9 people

cannot serve every Mass at both loca ons every Sunday. Sadly, some mes we cannot

help people with more important needs because we are just out of funding.

Jesus says to each of us personally, “Go and do likewise”.

So… What is your answer? ...opportuni es or loopholes? What kind of parish are we,

and what kind of parish is God calling us to be for Redlands?

I pray that we could welcome and support a young missionary like Eddie, Jordan, or Erick

on ANY weekend. We CAN when we embrace our God-given opportunity to work together.

Do not be afraid to give the best of yourself and your gifts to Christ. He deserves nothing less.

Pray + Serve + Give your First Fruits and watch what God does!

Laudato Si’! Caring for God’s Creation On the World Day of Peace, January 1, 1990, Saint John Paul II wrote that, “The aesthetic value of creation cannot be over-looked. Our very contact with nature has a deep restorative power; contemplation of its magnifi-cence imparts peace and serenity. The Bible speaks again and again of the goodness and beauty of creation, which is called to glorify God.” cf. Gen l:4ff; Ps 8:2; 104:1ff; Wis 13:3-5; Sir 39:16, 33; 43:1, 9

The next time you’re outdoors, take extra notice of something natural that you see, and consider what it tells you about our Creator. Do you find goodness and beauty? In what ways does nature glorify God? What can we learn from it? A worthy program of outdoor ethics and practices by the Boy Scouts of America is “Leave No Trace”.
