The parable describes the astute ploy of a
steward who uses resources within his reach
to ensure his own future. When he is about
to be fired from his job, he decides to make
friends to protect him when he loses his job.
He deceives his boss, and alters receipts so that debtors will
have to pay less than they owe. That way, he earns friends
for the future. Jesus does not present this parable to us to
judge the honesty or lack of honesty of the treasurer, but to
let us see the creativity in the use of goods. The point of the
parable is that the children of light should also be clever in
the use of our resources so that we can ensure what is really
important.
You can do lots of things with money and other material
resources. Money can buy pleasure: food, luxury hotels,
cars, trips. Money can buy material security: health insur-
ance, the best doctors and hospitals, weapons, security
guards, and lawyers. On the other hand, money can build
schools, churches, and roads and can publish good books.
With money, you can alleviate the sufferings of the poor
and the sick, or you can help in the struggle for all people to
be treated with justice. Money is useful for many things.
But, are all the uses of money equally wise? The Gospel
tells us that money is useful and also very dangerous. It is
dangerous when it is turned into an end in itself. At that
time, we make it into the gold we serve, instead of having
money serve our best interests. When money becomes the
center of our lives, our energies are employed in getting more
and more money. In a certain way, we sell our souls to get
more money.
If we choose God as our Lord, we cannot have money or
riches as our lord. No one can serve two masters. We are,
however, in a society in which everything invites us to see
the highest value in money. Jesus tells us that true happi-
ness is not to be found in money. Jesus calls his disciples to
use money and other material possessions as one who ad-
ministers something that does not really belong to him, and
to use it for really important things, that is, for building the
Reign of God. Frequently, the best interest of the Reign of
God is served by using money in works to create a more just
world where goods are shared among all and where the
accumulation of unnecessary goods is abolished.
Is money sometimes at the center of my life? What do I
think I want or need the money for? Have I ever been in a
situation where getting more money would have meant
something dishonest? What did I do?
Blessings,
Deacon Steve
¿Alguna vez he estado en
algo deshonesto? ¿Qué he hecho?
Bendiciones,
Diácono Steve

A Wake Up Call for the “bad” Steward 4
I really used to dread this parable because I misunderstood it. Today, I understand that the corrupt stew-
ard is NOT praised for squandering his master’s resources and trying to save his job sneakily; but, rather
for waking up and applying his crea vity to create beneficial solu ons. Instead of con nuing to neglect
debt collec ons, the “bad” steward reaches out to the various debtors to wheel and deal with them. The
steward recoups a large por on of the debt for his master while making friends who would look out for him
when he becomes jobless. (Note: the Gospel does not say that he remained employed.) The steward is rec-
ognized for applying his talents for the benefit of the master… even though it took a kick in the pants to do it!
Jesus is asking us about our thinking and our priori es here. Worldly wealth will pass away, probably sooner than we
think, so Christ reminds us to focus on eternal priori es while responsibly tending to worldly tasks. “If you are not trust-
worthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth?” In other scripture passages, Jesus plainly describes
how he will separate the sheep who obey his commands from the goats who neglect them. The Church teaches that there
is a direct relationship between moral action on earth and existence beyond death. Together, we are co‐responsible for
advancing God’s kingdom on earth, which means using our God‐given Time, Talents, and Treasure wisely.
Co-responsibility is part of our Catholic communal identity. After all, we believe that sin affects everyone; and, that the
Sacrament of Reconciliation provides a means for us to be accountable to God and to the rest of our community. Although
we practice this sacrament privately today, individuals in the early Church confessed their sins and asked for forgiveness
publicly. OUCH! As Catholics, we recognize that we can easily talk ourselves out of accep ng personal responsibility for
our ac ons. That’s why Confession IS good for the soul, and, it can help us from becoming goats who neglect others!
Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure to advance God’s kingdom on earth is our mission. It requires that we collaborate
co-responsibly. Together, we pray, serve, and give. The Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community is what we make of it —
from the success or downfall of our ministry efforts, to the care or lack of care for our parish facilities, to whether or not
we create and maintain safe environments for our children, to our willingness to employ new methods to meet our grow-
ing needs. God, the Master, is counting on us good stewards to tend his resources wisely.
How much impact would our parish make in our wider community if each of us honestly assessed our
Time, Talent, and Treasure? Could we crea vely find ways to Pray, Serve, and Give generously to become
game-changers for the local poor? Where and how are we neglec ng our mission? Where and how are
we advancing God’s kingdom on the earth? We have done very well, but there is much, much more to
be done.
Discipleship is not a burden; it is a privilege. Don’t wait for the Master to confront you. Make a choice to fully par cipate
in His plan today.
Pray + Serve + Give your First Fruits;
then enjoy what God does with them!

Independent Compensation Program — Programa Independiente de Compensación 8
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
You may recall the announcement this past May that our Diocese would be one of six in California to par cipate in a new Independent Compensa-
on Program for Vic m—Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse by Priests. As a point of informa on, the program is open for registra on as of Monday, September 16, 2019.
The program, as its name makes clear, is inde-pendently run. The Diocese will have no involve-ment in the administra on of the program, inter-viewing of vic ms or determina on of se lement amounts. The par cipa on of the Diocese is part of an ongoing commitment to healing and recon-cilia on for vic m—survivors of abuse by priests. It does not excuse these terrible sins of the past. It is an acknowledgement by our Church of the pain experienced by vic ms and an effort to take responsibility.
You can find more informa on about the Inde-pendent Compensa on Program launch in the latest issue of the BYTE newspaper (near the church doors). You can also find a link to the independent web site and hotline for program registra on posted on the homepage of the Diocesan website: www.sbdiocese.org
Let us all pray for the healing of vic ms of abuse and for our Church as it con nues to confront this crisis. Thank you.
Gracias

Laudato Si’! Caring for God’s Creation
The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones,” (Luke 16)
Care for Creation Idea: One small attitude that can add up to big benefits for our environment—before purchasing an item, consider where it’s packaging will go. Will you be able to reuse or recycle it, or will it end up in a landfill? According to the US EPA, almost 30% of US landfill waste is packing-related material, more than 77 million tons annually. Avoiding or reducing packaging can help a lot.
Reflect. What would I ask manufacturers regarding the way my favorite products are packaged? Aside from deciding not to purchase, is there a way I can positively advocate to them for less waste?
“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” — St Thérèse of Lisieux
