Music to Our Earsby GreGG Shapiro

If you saw (and loved) writer/director John Carney’s 2006 breakthrough film “Once,” about the unlikely romance

that develops between an Irish busker and a Czech immigrant, then you’ve probably been waiting for a follow-up that is its equal. “Begin Again” (Weinstein) comes close, but it doesn’t quite make the cut.

Down-on-his-luck indie record label founder Dan (“The Normal Heart”’s Mark Ruffalo) hits bottom when he’s dismissed by his business partner Saul (Mos Def) from the company they co-created. His marriage to music journal-ist Miriam (Catherine Keener), like his steady flow of libations, is on the rocks. His teenage daughter Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) has basically lost respect for him.

Across town, Greta (Keira Knightley), a Brit-ish singer/songwriter, has seen her relationship with boyfriend and songwriting partner Dave (Adam Levine) come apart at the seams as he experienced an unexpected rise in popular-ity. Reduced to crashing on the couch at her friend and busker Steve (James Corden), Greta plans to return to England.

But a chance meeting between Dan and Greta at a live music club, where Steve has invited Greta onstage to sing a song, will have a profound effect on both of their lives that neither of them could have foreseen. Where “Once” felt grounded in gritty reality, “Begin Again” has a New York fairytale (minus the fairies – it’s Manhattan, they couldn’t find one gay character?) quality that borders on the surreal. The environmental recording sessions, for instance, are pure Hollywood. So is Dan’s discovery of his daughter’s previously unre-vealed musical talent.

Redemption and romantic reunions are part of the soundtrack, as are the infectious tunes (a few of which were co-written by Gregg Alexander and former child-star Danielle Brisebois) sung by some of the cast members. There are parts of “Begin Again” that feel familiar, especially if you’ve watched “Once,” not enough to consider this “Once Again,” but sufficient to make you wonder if Carney is running out of ideas. However, if you are look-

SCREEN SAVOR

ing for some non-traditional summer enter-tainment, you’d be wise to start with “Begin Again.” [In theaters July 2, 2014.]

The Elton John concert doc “The Million Dollar Piano” (Eagle Vision/Yamaha/Rocket) is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Filmed in 2013 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace’s in Las Vegas (where Elton John has been per-forming for many years), the concert features 18 songs from the legendary piano man’s career, now in its sixth decade. Backed by long-

time members of his band, including Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson and Ray Cooper, as well as backing vocalists including Tata Vega, the Rocket Man demonstrates why he’s been able to be the concert draw he’s been for all these years.

Seated at the titular Million Dollar Piano, a nine-foot Yamaha (introduced by EJ as his “co-star”) equipped with several video screens to identify songs, albums and more, the gay music icon sings and tells stories to the audi-ence. He even gets extra points for a Madonna slam. DVD bonus mate-rial includes a “Making The Million Dollar Piano featurette and “Live In Kiev” footage.

Thursday 7/3Gourmet Grilled Cheeseo Thursday nights are notorious on the Drive, what with drink specials at almost every single bar. The best way to cap off a drunken night of foolishness is by enjoying a delicious gourmet grilled cheese at Wil-ton Drive’s celebrated New York Grilled Cheese. An eclectic array of sandwiches is offered at this trendy eatery, including a SoHo Sweet Cheese (mixing brie, caramelized onions, bacon and berry marmalade) and the famous Blue Buffalo (combining blue jack and American cheddar with buffalo chicken). Each sandwich comes with a delicious tomato bisque dipping sauce/soup. Newly arriving for dessert is the Hell’s Kitchen bread pudding, made fresh with their famous soft bread. 12 p.m. New York Grilled Cheese. 2207 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

rock and rollers Relyx will entertain the audience. At around 6:15 the ultimate Eagles tribute band, The Long Run, perform such American classics as “Hotel California” and “Take it Easy.” The night culminates in Fort Lauderdale’s ultimate fireworks display, with simulcast music on Lite 101.5 FM. 12:30 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Beach. A1A and Las Olas Blvd. 33316.

4th of July Fireworks Gay Tea Cruiseo Independence Day brings with it feelings of free-dom, patriotism, and visual stimulation. Thanks to the many different cities’ fireworks displays, there are more than enough opportunities for South Floridian residents to catch a beautiful night sky celebration. Why negotiate the various congested traffic patterns near A1A when there’s a gay tea cruise happening along the water? The 4th of July Gay Tea Cruise begins at 6:30 p.m. and sails around the Intercostal until 10:00 p.m. Entertainment includes host Kitty Meow, performer Deja Devonier, and DJ Greyson Jubilee. Also appearing: dancers from Johnny’s and Boardwalk. 6:30 p.m. Smoker’s Park. 540 SE.5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

The musical takes place in 19th-centruy France as Jean Valjean, a French peasant, tries to re-deem his life after spending nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child. 2 p.m. Pembroke Pines Theater of the Perform-ing Arts. 17195 Sheridan St Pembroke Pines. 33026.

Florida’s Supercono Comic conventions have become an important American cultural activity and are certainly not only for geeks anymore. Florida’s Supercon will have over 100 celebrities, 100 comic book artists and creators, and over 1,000 events. Cast members from such popular shows as “Game of Thrones” and “Sparta-cus” will be on hand to take questions and sign au-tographs. Pokemon tournaments, cosplay, and film screenings will all occur during this weekend long event. There’s even an information session on “Dr. Who.” Nerds, hipsters, geeks, and basically anyone interested in pop culture will unite for this one of a kind event. 12 p.m. Miami Beach Convention Center. 1901 Convention Center Drive. Miami Beach. 33139.

Bill’s knows this well and hosts a Country T-dance on Sundays, with DJ Cliff Roberts. Join all of the Fort Lauderdale country fans for $3 well and domestics, beer buckets for $12, and a complimentary buffet at 5 p.m. The night ends when Misty Eyez presents Trannie Palace. 4 p.m. Bill’s. 2209 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors. 33305

Two are quite ordinary—a pool league and poker competition from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The other is much more different—various video game consoles set up for competitive play, including a Wii, Nintendo, Sega, and Super Nintendo. As you play such retro games as Mario Kart and Duck Hunt, enjoy the retro music of this era as the sounds of the 1980s is played before 8, followed by the hits of the 1990s. Drink specials include $2 domestics, $2.50 imports, $1 Schnapps, and $5 Absolute flavored cocktails or martinis. Chill Wine Lounge BY RICK KARLIN

Chill is a sleek, modern wine lounge with convenient, if not abundant free park-ing. It’s a place to enjoy a glass (or two or

three) of wine, chat with friends and, well, chill. There is a beautiful bar, numerous tables, couch-es and even an outside area, if you don’t mind the mixture of cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes (it’s right at the intersection of Sunrise and Federal) and the smell of popcorn from the Gateway Theater, located right next door.

If the smell of that popcorn makes you hun-gry, the small menu has something for every-one. Cheese and charcuterie boards are available in two sizes for $20 and $27. A variety of crostini are also available. The selections include prosciutto with peaches, sweet peppers with goat cheese, escargot with spinach, pate with goat cheese and brie with mushrooms. Each option is $10. A sampler platter featuring your choice of any combination of the fi ve varieties is $25.

For something really yummy and decadent, try either of the baked cheeses; brie topped with gingered pears and caramel or Camembert topped with roasted mushrooms. The baked cheeses require a 30-minute wait, so have a second glass of wine to pass the time, then scoop up the oozy goodness with some bread.

Many other dishes are served tapas style. The pan-cultural selection includes a trio of dips, Mediterranean meatballs, frico tacos, cherry tomatoes stuffed with mozzarella and basil, and the classic prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. These dishes are priced be-tween $8 and $12. A sampler platter is also available featuring the taco, cherry tomatoes and asparagus for $25, although you’d be better off ordering the three items separately for just $2 more.

However, it’s the beverages that draw folks

to Chill. The vast selection of wines by the bottle and glass is complemented by a selec-tive variety of craft and IPA beers. The diverse boutique wine list is global in focus, offering more than 50 wines by the tasting, the glass or bottle. Prices average $10-$15 a glass, $35-$65 a bottle. The prices become even more reasonable on weeknights between fi ve until seven with a two for one happy hour special.

The beer selections range from hoppy to malt, something for every beer drinker’s taste. A few of the microbreweries are Florida-based. Beer prices range from $7-$10 a glass, oddly enough not part of the happy hour offer-ings. Liking Chill’s Facebook page will get you invites to special events and wine and beer tastings, some of them free.

While not a gay bar, the atmosphere is certainly gay friendly. The bar has even hosted a couple of events for GLBT organizations, includ-ing HRC and the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Weeknights can be a little quiet early in the evening, but that’s an advantage if you’re working on your mobile device (Chill has free Wi-Fi). After a few glasses of wine, your typing may get a bit sloppier, a problem you won’t encounter at Starbucks.

On weekend evenings, there are local performers of varying quality. Service

is friendly, if not always the most polished. One of my pet peeves is when servers “auction off” the items ordered, as in, “Who had

the Chardonnay?” How hard is it to remember when there are only

four people at a table? My only other complaint is that, while Chill looks like a deco movie set for a glamorous period fi lm set in the 1930s or ‘40s, the soft purple lighting isn’t the most fl attering. Switching it for a nice pink hue would make everyone in Chill look more attractive, not that the decidedly pretty people hanging out there need much help in that department.

Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gayby Rick kaRlin

After you’re done enjoying the fire-works here on the 4th of July, head up to Philadelphia where the biggest influx

of tourists is over and you can enjoy historical sites without tripping over families of out-of-towners. Philadelphia is one of our country’s oldest cities so there’s plenty of history to “get straight” and a few to “get gay” as well. The City of Brotherly Love was the site of some of the nation’s first gay rights pickets, and in 1982 was one of the first cities in the country to pass an anti-gay discrimination law.

For history buffs, Philadelphia is full of Colonial heritage. See the Liberty Bell in its new light-filled digs at Liberty Bell Center, on Independence Mall. A short block away is Independence Hall where patriots gathered in 1776 to defy the king of England and where 11 years later, representatives from 12 states shaped the Constitution. A guided tour led by National Park Service rangers includes the original inkstand used to sign the Declaration of Independence; and an original draft of the Constitution. If you want a complete tour of Philly’s historical sites, with lots of background knowledge, sign up for “Philadelphia on Foot” run by Ed Mauger (215-627-8680). A captivating blend of historian and gossip, he’ll lead you on a walking tour to behind-the-scenes places and tell true tales that involve everything from 18th-century sex to surgery.

Refuel at City Tavern where the founding fathers gathered. It is still a working restaurant where dishes are prepared according to historic recipes and served on Colonial-style dishware by a wait staff in period dress. Try the pepper pot soup and lobster pie. Cap off the evening with “The Lights of Liberty”, an hour-long outdoor sound-and-light show on the cobble-stone streets of Society Hill. If you want even more history, plan a day trip out to Valley Forge where General George Washington and his troops endured the difficult winter of 1777-78. It is now a National Historical Park and is less than an hour from Center City.

Now that you’ve got your history straight, let’s talk about how to make your nightlife gay. Gay life (and nightlife) is centered in an area of the city fondly called the Gayborhood, which runs from Chestnut to Pine Streets between 11th and Broad Streets. If Epcot Center had a “GLBT” section, it would look like this. Narrow, tree-lined, cobblestone streets, and brick townhouses and apartment buildings peppered with bookstores, incredible

TRAVEL: PHILADELPHIA PART Ilittle storefronts selling trendy furniture, cloth-ing and accessories, coffee shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. Philadelphia isn’t a big city and many of the destinations you’ll want to visit are either in the Gayborhood/Center City or a short walk away.

There are a number of good hotels, but when I’m visiting Philly, I always stay at The Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The first sky-scraper ever built in Philadelphia and a former bank building is now home to this 600-plus-room hotel and located in the heart of the city. There’s easy access to the Convention Cen-ter, Chinatown, the dramatic Academy of Music, and, of course, the Gayborhood.

The Gayborhood offers plenty of nightlife options, whether you prefer to sit at a piano bar, chat at a neighborhood pub or dance the night away. Tavern on Camac is a

traditional piano bar with folks singing-along on the first floor, an intimate cabaret on the second and other floors for dancing and private events. iCandy features three floors swarming with men every night. The Bike Stop, which has been around for more than 30 years, is another multi-level club with each floor offering a special focus on leather. U Bar, formerly known as Uncles reinvented itself and now boasts a sleeker look, better lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows. The legendary strong drinks and great beers at reasonable prices remains the same. Voyeur is a popular after-hours club; Knock is a popular restaurant/bar; and there’s always Woody’s, the traditional first stop on any proper night out.

Fitness Myths Exposed!by Tom bonanTi

I have been a certified personal trainer for ten years, but I have been working out all my life. In that time I have read

a lot, heard a lot, and I’ve seen everything. Everyone has an opinion about how to build the best biceps, how to bulk up, cut up and trim down. Some of this information has proved invaluable and some of it is just plain bull! When I work with clients, I want them to know the truth. Let’s look at some common myths that just may be holding you back, or worse yet, causing you harm.

Myth #1YOU DON’T NEED TO DO CARDIO.Aerobic fitness is among the most preventa-tive medicines available. While building solid lean muscle is important, cardio vascular fit-ness is essential, maybe even more important than resistance training. And the best way to “pump up” the lungs and heart is by exercis-ing aerobically. In short, you must do cardio. According to the International Sports Sciences Association, three to four 30-45 minute ses-sions of cardio per week will definitely help to build cardiovascular fitness. Tabulate your target heart rate (220 minus your age), then try to get your heart rate to within a range of 65 to 85 per cent of that number and keep it there for 20 minutes or so! If you get bored with cardio machines, then find an aerobic sport you like, such as swimming or biking.

Myth #2NO PAIN, NO GAIN.Only a Neanderthal still believes this old adage. This long running myth can potentially have dangerous effects on your body. There is a dif-ference between real pain and the soreness and discomfort you feel after a great workout. Ex-periencing pain during any fitness endeavor is a sign that your body is in trouble. Stop what you are doing, check your form, stretch, and drink water. For any pain that persists and wors-ens over days, you must see your doctor. On the other hand, some muscle soreness can be expected a day or two after a really intense

workout especially after you’ve experienced a lay off. This is called residual muscle soreness. Stretching, rest, massage and contrasting hot and cold showers can help ease this discomfort.

Myth #3I CAN ONLY GET “BIG” IF I TAKE THE LATEST MOST EXPENSIVE SUPPLE-MENTS AND STEROIDS.Just because a prominent body builder is pitching a particular supplement or pro-hormone in one of the muscle rags, does not mean that you need to use it. You can achieve a fit, healthy and beautiful body if you work hard in the gym, eat healthy and clean, and get enough quality rest between workouts. Testosterone supplementation should be ad-ministered and monitored by a physician only.

Myth #4I NEED TO WORK OUT EVERY DAY.Cumulative micro-trauma is the technical term for overtraining and it is nothing you should take lightly. Weight training every muscle group everyday without proper rest will result in muscle tears, joint pain, gross fatigue and even-tually serious injuries. Train each muscle group no more than twice a week for 20 minutes and make sure that muscle group gets 48 to 72 hours rest between training sessions. Take one to two days off from the weights each week, but stay active, do your cardio and eat properly.
