BOY CRIES WOLFSheep, Dog & Wolf is the winner of the Hallenstein Brothers Critics’ Choice Prize in the 2013 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. Finalists Janine and the Mixtape, Paquin and Sheep, Dog & Wolf each performed a live set at the King’s Arms in Auckland on Wed 06 Nov in front of a packed crowd and a panel of 10 music critics. The critics were tasked with selecting just one recipient; a musical prodigy they believe has the potential to become a future Tui winner. Following an impressive set, Sheep, Dog & Wolf - the stage name of Auckland’s Daniel McBride - took home the prize. McBride says: “I’m stunned. I’m just so happy. Paquin and Janine and the Mixtape were incredible tonight; I can’t wait to see where they go next.”

SECONDHAND LOVEThey hijacked the charts with ‘Thrift Shop’ and followed it up with the number one ode to gay rights, ‘Same Love’. The Seattle duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will bring their world tour to New Zealand in March 2014. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will be joined in Tinie Tempah. The Londoner has just dropped his latest album, Demonstration featuring guest spots from Diplo, Dizzee Rascal, 2Chainz, Big Sean, and John Martin, Tinie’s set the bar high for grime lovers across the globe.

Her sophomore album, Fire Within was released in September and debuted at #5 on the Top 40 Albums chart in New Zealand. The album features the hit single, ‘Wings’.

ISN’T IT IRONIC?Alanis Morrisette is no stranger to taking the stage, but it will be other people singing her hits ‘You Oughta Know’, ‘Hand In My Pocket’ and ‘Ironic’ when her musical hits Broadway. That’s right: Jagged Little Pill is coming to the Great White Way. The seven-time Grammy-Award winner is teaming up with Pulitzer-Prize winning Tom Kitt, the musical mastermind behind Next To Normal and Green Day’s American Idiot, to create a production with the same honesty, power, and raw emotion as the 1995 hit album.

MINAJ - À - TROISNicki Minaj has confirmed she will release a new album next year. The rapper hasn’t dropped any music for the last 18 months, but she admits she’s beginning to plan her third LP and is expecting it to be ready by the end of 2014. Speaking to MTV, she said, “I’m definitely working. I’m very excited at what I’ve been coming up with. I already started, I didn’t tell anybody because I didn’t want to jinx it and stuff but I already started and I’m going home tomorrow to really start.” Nicki is remaining secrative about who she is working with, but she’s confident the people she has selected for her new studio album will put a different spin on her music

DRIVING EM CRAZYDue to high demand, selling out both his Auckland and Wellington shows, Jimmy Carr has added an extra show for both cities. No longer chasing the April Sun in Cuba, the boys return to New Zealand to perform their first series of acoustic gigs around the country. Their one of the biggest rocks bands of a generation, spurring a number of top chart hits, and now revisiting their classics from an acoustic mindset, fans are in for a treat.

Long before Riri was grabbing her crotch, the original queens of hip-hop were sexing it up. The Grammy award-winning group and are known for putting on an energetic, dynamic and incredibly fun live show. Salt (Cheryl James) and Pepa (Sandy Denton) first burst into the worldwide spotlight in the late 80’s with their international smash hit ‘Push It’.

Nashville-based artists Robert and Cory are joining forces to present a show steeped in country, bluegrass and gospel genres. Robert was inspired by the records he’d heard while growing up in southern Texas, while Cory was raised by religious parents who didn’t approve of pop music and grew up listening to vintage gospel and Johnny Cash.

Top trio (Ben, Liam and Katie) are keeping things calm and chilled out for your weekend wind up and are very happy to be joined by two other cool peeps for their show: Emily Edrosa and Big Bend. Emily, of Street Chant fame, is playing a mix of cool jams, while BB is Auckland’s newest guitar band.

Led by the rare charisma of frontman Henry Wagons, a celebrated solo artist in his own right, Wagons offer heavy doses of stomping outlaw country, irresistible crooning and classic pop. The group has just spent the last few years touring with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Justin Townes Earle, and Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zero’s.

Brockaflower is a nine-piece hip-hop/neo-soul group, hailing from Wellington. Since their formation early in 2011, Brockaflower have built up a strong and enthusiastic fanbase through their energetic stage shows around the country, and are set to release their eagerly awaited debut studio album in 2014. Get up, jump around and go crazy.

On their upcoming tour, the Wellington show is the first in The Black Seed’s home city since their sell-out Dust and Dirt tour in 2012, and for the first time the band are playing Masterton. Fans are in for an extra treat at these three gigs with members of band performing DJ sets before each show. With support from DJ’s Flash Harry, Lord Echo, Hammondhead, Black Butter and friends.

Fresh from an inspired US trip of writing and performing, Watercolours aka Chelsea Jade Metcalf is releasing her EP ! To celebrate this and all her recent achievements, including playing alongside Cat Power, Dirty Projectors and Bloc Party, she’s going to give you the gig of your life. Supported by Signer (Glass Vaults).

UK heavyweight Mr C is joined by Andy Vann, Jason Kyle and Matt Drake. Ol’ C-dawg was a child of the 1960s and began MCing around London clubs at 16 years old. Founder and owner of Plink Plonk records, cofounder of End Recordings, and cofounder and owner of the Superfreq label, he’s a big name and a big star.

Merzbow is spouting some serious definitive brand of Japanese noise. From the darkest subterranean lows to interstellar cosmic highs, his punishing, remorseless frequencies pour forth in a relentless onslaught of pure sound. Celebrated for his solo releases and collaborations, it’s an aural experience like no other. One word: Loud.

Songwriter and guitarist Ivy Rossiter has been trekking across the country, playing solo shows from Fiordland to Northland. Even though our classic turbulent weather may have dampened her spirits a few times, she pushed on and through it all new music and beautiful lyrics have grown, providing Luckless with an arsenal of fresh grief-and-glory borne material to perfect and perform.

When Timberland got his paws on their single ‘Apologise’, OneRepublic became the band you couldn’t escape. And seriously, that song was in every pub around the country for too long. Now, still going strong and without Timberland remixing things up, the US rockers are coming to New Zealand.

The San Fran trio’s latest offering has been hailed by some as their most poignany album to date, with NME calling it “beautiful and stately”. Recorded at Dave Grohl’s iconic Studio 606, the album is laced with much emotional and historical significance.

It’s easy to see Matangi as a Jackson Pollock. Meaning, a shit-load gets splattered onto canvas and next second, hey presto - we have questionable art!

But it’s not like that. At least, not once you get over the shock of so much being thrown onto one album. Afterwards, you see the method behind MIA’s seemingly frantic madness.

Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasm (MIA’s name in the real world) has had a rather crappy time of it, lately. She’s in the midst of a legal battle regarding her flipping the bird at America’s most holiest of holies - the Superbowl. There’s a court case for custody of her young son, and, just to heap another log on her bonfire of problems, she’s had more than a few issues getting this latest record out to the masses.

But Matangi finally gets to see daylight and it’s a good, if at times confusing, thing.

The album’s aptly named for one Hindu goddess of music and learning. That first connection isn’t rocket science but the second plays into the trouble’s that have plagued this 38-year-old rapper/singer/artist. Matangi is a tangible representation of rebirth for MIA, marking a second coming for her music career after the lukewarm response to her third release, MAYA, from 2010.

And just so you didn’t miss it, she’s loaded Matangi with every bullet she possesses, firing off each round with a self-assured glee. The album’s gorged with her trademark London-accented

raps, frenetic drums, thunderous bass, and general, dancehall/hip-hop/indie-pop, mash-up madness.

That berserk, smashed-up quality comes to the fore on tracks like ‘Warriors’ and ‘aTENTion.’ ‘Warriors’ is a psychedelic tilt with more than a hint of eastern-influence. While ‘aTENTion’ cools the irons before cranking into a crazed, pop-behemoth of a song, that still needs to take its pills to keep from going totally berko.

There’s the high profile ‘Bad Girls,’ which seems to appear on every soundtrack of the last year or so. But, seemingly to balance out such commercial ear-wormery, are the pointed little reminders that this lady of London remains as socially aware as ever. She pokes a stick at YOLO culture with ‘YALA,’ a fun yet insightful dig at gen Y’s try-to-be-different-by-being-the-same, methodology. Further hounding the clueless on ‘Boom-Skit, with lines like, “all I see is poor people, they should be on ghetto-gram.”

And that’s just scratching the surface, because in MIA’s layer cake of art, there’s always more to put on the canvas.

What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? The LEGO Movie. ‘Nuff said.

Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? They’ll never find me. I never return to the same place twice. I’m as illusive as a black cat against a night sky. A ghost, a shadow dancer, walking from town to town. That movie The Book of Eli is about me. I know, weird casting.

What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi? I assume the world ends. Or at the very least a parallel universe is created where you never existed.

and apologize profusely. Fancy Italian pizza so it tastes like I made an effort.

The best TV show around at the moment is… Probably Parks and Recreation. Just watched the first episode of the newest season. One of the funniest episodes of TV I’ve seen in a long time.

The best place for a date night is… I dunno about dates. I don’t like the word, too much pressure. I reckon we should change it from “date” to “fancy hang out time”.

People say you look like… People yelled “Harry Potter” at me a lot in Thailand. I think any white guy with glasses would get that though.

Five celebs on your f**klist? Oh man you’re seriously doing this to me? Okay, Amanda Bynes, Ke$ha, that chick from Paramore… Nah, Aubrey Plaza five times, no joke.

When first interviewed for the butler’s job, Cecil Gaines is informed: “We have no tolerance for politics at the White House.” Yes, it’s easy for cynics to sneer, but with every main character afforded some complexity, what could have been Civil Rights 101 from the daytime TV-movie school is nowhere near as black and white.

Inspired by the real life of White House butler Eugene Allen, Lee Daniels (Precious) takes the ‘truth’ and ladles on heaps of Hollywood fiction. Creating the character of Cecil allows the film to take in a sweeping history of US Civil Rights – from the harsh life of a 1920s Southern cotton picker, to an audience with the newly elected Obama. Yes, it could easily be accused of oversentimentality, simplification, liberal leanings and melodramatic flourishes – but then, so could Gandhi and Forrest Gump.

The minor cast reads like a dream talkshow guest list – Jane Fonda,

Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, Terrence Howard, Vanessa Redgrave – but they’re all pretty good. As the Presidents, Alan Rickman makes a great Reagan, Robin Williams a fine Eisenhower, Liev Schreiber a light-relief Lyndon Johnson. The only casting hiccup is John Cusack who remains uncannily unlike Nixon, fake nose and all. But the spotlight belongs to Forest Whitaker as Cecil and Oprah Winfrey as his wife Gloria, with both delivering superbly realised performances.

The unshowy direction serves a script juxtaposing racism, sexism, sentimentality and serious social concern. It may be a TV movie writ large, (think Roots with Winfrey), but it works because, true or not, there’s enough warmth, intelligence, heart, humour and humanity at the core of The Butler to serve as more than superficial entertainment.

There is an easy way to do absolutely nothing yet support a charity. It’s a crazy concept, but for just one Wattie’s can, you can get a ticket to a recent release movie, with all the cans going off to The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Unsurprisingly, this is a huge success every year with thousands of cans going their way.

Stephen King’s 1976 thrilled/horror shocked audiences to their core. The idea of a coming-of-age girl, with telekinetic powers, was a radical concept for the time and turned into a hit. Now, Kick-Ass’ Chloë Grace Moretz takes on the titular role, with a new kind of scary evil of a girl wronged by her peers.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in this retelling of the early days of the whistleblowing website, culminating in the release of a series of controversial and history changing information leaks. The website’s overnight success brought instant fame to the flow of information to news media.

Made famous for Ryan Gosling’s “photoshopped abs”, this poignant comedy will have you laughing and crying at the same time. Forty-something, straight-laced Cal thinks he has the perfect life, but when his wife Emily asks for a divorce, things quickly unravel. Cal is taken on as a protégé to handsome player Jacob.

Just when you thought at 42 years old it was time for Jackass’ Johnny Knoxville to grow up, he comes back with this. Candid camera moments capture real-life people being shocked and disgusted at “Bad Grandpa”. Joined by a young sidekick, the pair get up to all kinds of dirty mischief.

When we last left Hank Moody, he had just been sentenced to three years’ probation for statutory-rape. Entering its fifth season, Californication picks up two years and nine months into Hank’s probation. He is living in New York and has just split from his most recent girlfriend.

ShIT WORTh EATING

Are you a lover of fine seafood and fresh fish? What about amazing service and a cool atmosphere? Squid Row could be for you! With new owners, a new look and a fresh take on seafood dishes, this is the place you want to head for lunch and dinner! With a funky, casual art-deco style refurbishment, there’s a new menu to boot. You’ll be blown away by the option – everything from surf and turf, to crumbled scallops and chips, and salads. The new Squid Row also runs drinks Happy Hour Wednesday to Friday, pizza promotions on Tuesdays, and 2-4-1 mussels on Sundays.

SQUID ROW224 SYMONDS ST

Gourmet burgers are shizering all over chain-food takeaways. What’s not to love? It’s local produce and juicy meat, which means you can feel (almost) guilt free about having burgers for dinner. Since the ‘80s these guys have been working hard to perfect the art of burger construction. It’s a constant process to get you the best of the best.

BURGER WISCONSIN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

As the name suggests (very cleverly, might I add?) these guys are slaying your early morning wake up with all kinds of amazing breakfast/brunches. Pancakes smothering in maple syrup and vanilla, a hearty omelette stuff with the good stuff, or mince on toast (with a modern twist). Always fresh and fast, it’s good stuff.

CONCERT SEASON COMES and goes and for many metal fans, it’s a sad time. Soundwave somehow gets better and better, Vans Warped Tour passes us by and many of the metal Gods never quite make it here. It doesn’t cost that much to fly to Australia, does it? In some cases, it does. But, we finally get something to call our own. Westfest 2014. Two nights at Vector Arena showcasing the world’s best rock, metal and punk acts, needless say, shit will get crazy.

As if that wasn’t enough, Westfest is bringing back bands that haven’t been here for far too long, artists that have never ventured down this far and a multi platinum selling beast from thrash metal. So, lay down an excitement tarp because the first of the line up is; Korn, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Asking Alexandria, Five Finger Death Punch, Black Veil Brides, Eagles Of Death Metal, August Burns Red, Whitechapel, Terror and Saving Grace with more acts to be announced.

Korn are following through from their latest album The Paradigm Shift and they’re in fine form with original guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch back in the fold for the first time since 2003. It’ll be the first time they’ve returned to our shores in over five years, with a filled out back catalogue including; Untitled, Korn 111 and Path Of Totality.

As for the bands that haven’t yet ripped your face off on a New Zealand stage, Asking Alexandria are right up there. They’re coming off the back of their record From Death To Destiny which was highly anticipated (and stole the number five spot on the Billboard top 200) and looks to propel them to international stardom, they’ve held the prestigious place of main stage at Download Festival.

Dave Mustane is also coming along - and he’s bringing Megadeth with him - and he’s in the ranks of those who will be arriving here for the first time. And another with a new release, Super Collider. The multi platinum band are playing alongside the master of horror rock, the one and only Rob Zombie, who will also be down here for the first time.

Zombie has taken his show all across the world and played with the likes of Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Murderdolls) so it’s about time he brought his brand of musical theatre this far down.

To round off the bands that haven’t been here before, Black Veil Brides have heard the cries of the BVB Army will be making their way down to Vector as well.

But it gets better and it gets heavier, much, much heavier. With genre front runners Whitechapel, a defining force in contemporary heavy music whose first three albums, including the latest self titled release, bring some of the most aggressive, hostile and dynamic music to the scene they’re a force to be reckoned with.

At the tail end of the first announcement, are hardcore punk rockers Terror who are right back at and will be bringing spirit, fight and essence to their performances of songs that would make death himself resurrect the dead for one final wall of death. And the pull no punches homegrown Saving Grace, whose modest beginnings have led them to multi record deals followed five star reviews, headlining tours and festival shows across Australasia.

Announcement number two is on its way and if the first one is anything to go off, Westfest is shaping up to destroy the metal scene in a way New Zealand’s never experienced.

Get Excited.

Location is easy (clues are in the title) and up those narrow stairs lies a whole ‘nother world out there. On one side, there is the indoors, with fairylights, wooden floors and tables and a sweet space to get your groove on. ASSASSIN’S CREED IV: BLACK FLAGxBOx 360, pS3, cOmINg TO pc, xBOx ONE, pS4

I won’t give away too many details, as discovering the story is a lot of the fun of the AC series, but Edward Kenway is the hero of this tale. He takes on the dangerous life of a privateer in order to make some quick money, and to find a better life than the drudgery and poverty that seems to be his destiny. He then stumbles by accident into the path of a desperate member of the secret order of Assassins, and learns of the centuries old battle waged against mortal enemies the Templars. Whether Edward is really interested in choosing a side is to be discovered as the story progresses.

As in previous titles, the player can move through story mode, and choose how many of the multitude of side quests they want to dip into. There are assassination missions, ships to battle and plunder of their riches, recruitment and rescue of potential shipmates, and treasure hunts. There are also skill and equipment tree upgrades, including to Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw. Edward’s arsenal of swords, guns and knives can be expanded and improved, as can his outfits, and headquarters. And yes, his art collection.

While in previous titles, you could mostly choose to ignore side missions if you wanted to power through and get to the freaky ending that you never really had a hope of understanding, in AC4, in order to keep advancing on through the story, you must make at least a few necessary upgrades to the Jackdaw. For this you’ll need to make some serious money, which can be achieved by looting chests, selling items you’ve found (or stolen, or hunted), or taking on contract assassin jobs to make quick cash.

As upgrades are performed throughout the game, the Jackdaw goes from “average little ship that could”, through to “genuinely terrifying threat to all it encounters.”

For a platform supposedly on its last legs, AC4 looks sweet as a nut on the 360. The water effects in particular are staggeringly good at times. I cannot wait to see what it’s going to look like on the next gen consoles in the next few months. It’s a boat-load of fun, too, and comes highly recommended for fans of the series.

ACTIVISION’S THIRD-QUARTER EARNINGS BEAT EXPECTATIONSActivision Blizzard’s latest financial report shows better-than-expected earnings for the third quarter of 2013.

The company’s net revenues for the quarter were $691 million, exceeding the $635 million outlook by 8.8%, but falling short of last year’s $841 million figure for the same period.

“Robust continued engagement with our core franchises drove digital revenue,” the company explained, “which constituted a majority of all revenue. This quarter demonstrates that games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft engage and entertain our fans year round.”

Despite the recent launches of Call of Duty: Ghosts and Skylanders SWAP Force, however, the company has revised its fourth-quarter predictions down from $1.3 billion to $1.26 billion, citing the unique challenges presented by the transition to a new console generation. Predictions for the year have been raised from $4.31 billion to $4.32 billion.

GRAN TURISMO 6 UPDATE WILL INCLUDE COURSE CREATORAn update on the official Gran Turismo 6 website reveals plans to add a course creator to the game.

The Course Maker app will be added in a title update some time after the game’s December 6 launch, allowing players to create and race on their own tracks. Additionally, a separate update will add the ability to generate custom courses using real life GPS coordinates gathered using a smartphone application.

Other news out of the update includes a return of B-Spec mode, which lets you manage a team as a race director, and a “GPS Visualiser”, also coming in a future update.

A RECENTLY BROADCASTED TED talk by English education specialist Dr Ken Robinson discussed the future of the education system, with a particular emphasis on lost opportunities. Robinson argued that in the new world employers will seek out students who are creative, with good ol’ academic skills such as Maths and English being less important.

While she wouldn’t exactly come out and say it, singer/songwriter Ginny Blackmore is a living example of that theory. On the phone from Aussie she’s bright and breezy as she tells me all about her meteoric career rise from a shy, unconfident student afraid to put her hand up in class to a successful writer who’s worked with Christine Aguilera, sung in the board room of Epic records to performing her own music, making a hit video and recording her own debut album.

Hang on what? Back up the bus! Blackmore left school at 16 to become a musician, but she didn’t drop out, she was encouraged by her principal and supported by her parents, Blackmore’s father was a singer musician in the local church.

“You see many people begin singing in church. I have to admit though I love R’n’B.” At 9 years old she was blown away by Lauren Hill performing in Sister Act II.

“My first album was a Fugees album, which my Dad bought me but I got to know Destiny’s Child, Usher, Pink and Michael Jackson.” When she left school a deal was made with her parents to work diligently on her song writing, as a serious concern. “I had a nine to five job, writing, and if there wasn’t some kind of noise coming out of my bedroom, my dad was in there wanting to know why!”

At age 20 Blackmore took the punt and relocated, unscripted and unsupported to London with a plan to earn a living writing for others. Blackmore had pretty little to trade, saved for a self produced demo she’d recorded on equipment bought for her by her new friend Daniel Beddingfield.

“I was doing something at Parachute Festival, and I was tapped on the shoulder by Daniel who told me I amazing and he ended up helping me out.” Her work was shopped around and eventually scored a deal with Sony/ATV. However, she found it very hard to write for others, yearning to perform for herself instead.

“My time in London was hard, I didn’t really have a plan, I was

struggling to get record labels to believe in me, beyond just writing and because my songs were deeply personal, it was hard to make them work for others.” However, people did listen. Veteran music manager Mark Sudack (Mariah Carey) heard her promo, which featured early versions of ‘Bones’ and ‘Sing for Me’, who not only signed her on the spot but introduced her to songwriter-producer and A&R man Tricky Stewart (Beyoncé, Rhianna).

“That was a magical day, meeting these amazing and powerful people.” Daunting too, no doubt because that meeting eventually led to an introduction to Epic Records CEO LA Reid. Blackmore was asked to sing ‘Bones’ for him -twice!

“The first time I was very nervous, I choked.” But Reid was convinced that she had one of the best voices he’s ever heard. He encouraged her to come out of her shy shell and sing it again, this time with more conviction. He called in the office staff for audience encouragement. Blackmore’s second run brought the house down and reduced many to tears. It landed her the deal and now she’s writing material for a full-length album.

“It’s going well. I get to sing my own material, which is satisfying.” And that includes ‘Sing For Me” which was performed by Christina Aguilera. “I got flown out to LA to rework it. It was cool, my lyrics were all from a Kiwi girl’s point of view so some needed a bit of rework, as she didn’t always relate. It’s a bit surreal because everything is set up hours before she arrives, all perfect. I actually decided I wasn’t going to sit waiting like a puppy dog, everyone was all waiting in anticipation of her arrival, and so I popped into the loo the moment she was scheduled to arrive. When I came out it was all (puts on casual voice) “Oh, helloo…” Being ‘casual’ at that meeting was great, The Kiwi laid back approach helped, overall.”

And now Blackmore is performing her own material, she’s in Australia having just come from a supporting Ed Sheeran around the USA. “It was really special when I’d perform ‘Bones’ and could see fans down the front, in places like San Francisco, mouthing all the words. Now she’s finally coming home, to perform this week at Galatos and later at Parachute Festival. Welcome home Ginny.

Salt-N-Pepa was one of the first all-female rap crews, but how did you all come to be making music together in the first place? Well, Pepa and I were in school together, we were also friends at the time and we also worked part time at Sears together as telephone operators. I was dating Hurby Luv Bug at the time who was a producer and he was going to Centre of Media Arts and he had to do a project and he wanted to use Pep and I to rap on the track. The song ended up being ‘The Showstopper’ which was an answer to Doug E Fresh’s hit ‘The Show’. So what started out as a project ended up getting played on the radio. Shortly after this we recorded an album, which was Hot, Cool & Vicious.

You entered the industry at a time when rap music was believed to be a fad and record companies were reluctant to sign rap artists. Were you guys aware of this at the time, did it affect or influence your music? We were very aware that it was particularly difficult for females at that particular time. Ironically, we promised an independent label that we could finish a whole album for $5k so Hurby, Pep and myself literally lived in the studio trying to deliver on this promise, and the album we made was Hot, Cool & Vicious that went double platinum!

Of the five studio albums, which was the hardest to make and why? Brand New was the most challenging to make because we did it completely on our own. We had split from working with Hurby and it was a weird time for us as we were transitioning between record companies. A lot of different things were going on personally and professionally at the time and I feel like that interfered with the process. We were also having some internal struggles, which made the process a little harder.

Which was the most rewarding and why? Very Necessary was by far the most rewarding. Our lead single was ‘Shoop’ which Pep put together and we had to fight to convince the record company to even release it! We really believed in the track so we fought hard and when we won the battle, it ended up becoming a massive

worldwide hit so that was very rewarding.

The band officially disbanded in 2002. Were you sick of the industry? The reason I left the group was because I was just exhausted and I was disappointed in the business at the time, and Pep and I had become estranged due to external interferences in our relationship. So I made it public that I just had to take some time out to quiet my life. So I left and stayed at home raising my children and being a Mum. I leaned heavily on my faith to get me through that time.

Were the mixed emotions about this break up? Yes it was very difficult because I wasn’t able to articulate my emotions and feelings to Pep. Me leaving came as a surprise to Pep and really hurt her so we had to take some time to go through rebuilding our relationship and learning to forgive each other. We actually ended up going to counseling which gave us some understanding of our relationship and taught us how to communicate again. It was very hard for both of us.

And the upcoming tour, are you guys excited about this? We are so excited to be back on the road. We’ve been to Australia three times in the last four years and we just love it, the fans embrace us so warmly. It was great news when we found out we were coming to Auckland this time as well.

Do you have a favourite song or songs to play live? We love performing ‘Shoop’ – it has such a great energy live

What are you most looking forward to about the Auckland gig? We are just looking forward to reconnecting with our fans. It’s been such a long time since we’ve been to Auckland, something like 19 years! So we are just so excited to come over and see and reconnect with everyone.
