JUST SORROW, NO GLEEPolice confirmed over the weekend that actor Cory Monteith, who played the teen heartthrob Finn Hudson in Glee, was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver. The cause of death the 31 year old is as yet unknown, but there were no signs of foul play, said police. Monteith had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction in the past, and completed a stint of rehab in April for substance addiction. Monteith’s spokeswoman, Melissa Kates, said in a statement: “We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate.”

US electro-rap group Far East Movement are touring Australasia in July! They’ll be bringing their Movementality show to Auckland. The group rocketed to notoriety with smash hits ‘Like A G6’ and last year’s ‘Live My Life (feat. Justin Bieber)’ and ‘Turn Up The Love (feat. Cover Drive)’.

Come out of the cold and into the heat of Brazil! Juice Bar is here to warm you up this winter with the perfect recipe: The rhythm of a traditional Brazilian Carnival, traditional food/drinks and, of course, the latest Brazilian hits. Have your dancing shoes on!!

Brandishing solid riffs, accomplished drumming and thunderous bass, Husk create a refreshing dose of tight, psych-rock music. They draw influence from classic psych/blues/prog artists such as King Crimson and Free, as well as their contemporary counterparts Graveyard, The Black Angels and Sleepy Sun.

Hot off the release of their highly anticipated fourth LP Time Stays, We Go – The Veils bring their exhilarating craftsmanship and fearless live performance to New Zealanders once again. Their new LP is the The Veils at the pinnacle of creative prowess, instantly dazzling in New Zealand, already racking up significant radio play and critical acclaim.

In celebration of the release of their brand-new double album Fandango, the band announces a six-stop New Zealand tour this July. Fans are in for a treat of a live show “on the spectrum between Spinal Tap’s Jazz Odyssey and David Lynch (in the best possible way)” as recently described by the Guardian UK.

Shapeshifter need no introduction. Recorded in Berlin, Woodhill and Wellington and incorporating elements of the heavy soul tempered with drum and bass, jazz and funk that fans have become accustomed to, their new album Delta sees Shapeshifter stretch their palette even further, adding club tempo feels and other more slanted elements into the mix.

A special one-off live cinema event screening as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival. Italian prog-rock legends Goblin will perform their iconic score to Dario Argento’s horror film Suspiria. The cult classic tells the delirious tale of an American ballet student who transfers to a prestigious dance academy in Germany, only to discover that it is controlled by a coven of witches.

Although Mount Maunganui duo Joseph Thompson and Maia Potier only began recording music together in April 2012, some would say the band’s diverse sound has been evolving. A guitar drives most of their music, with appearances from xylophones, tambourines and a vintage 80s Casio keyboard.

After disbanding the Mint Chicks, Ruban Nielson planned to quit music and take on a day job. For a hobby, he started making psychedelic demos in his basement, using samples. Soon, music took over as a career again, and his fun brand of experimental pop ended up in the hands of Fat Possum Records.

A sculptor of musical sound, with infinite creativity and technical mastery, with a career spanning three decades, more than 15 million album sales and three Grammy Awards, Steve Vai embodies the seamless, symbiotic union between man and guitar, bending sounds as much as audiences’ minds.

Manuka Jam combines an exclusive selection of New Zealand’s house djs and musicians to provide a unique live clubbing experience. Features Jimmy Wales (harmonica), Freedom on Sax (Layla) playing the saxophone and MC Emma Hand with some sweet explicit freestyle vocals.

As front man and pop-writing genius with the legendary Exponents, Jordan clocked up a staggering 18 Top 40 singles over the years, with ‘Victoria’ recently voted by public as the eight greatest New Zealand song of all time. His band is a mash-up of iconic Kiwi singers, bringing the energy of Jordan’s history mixed with a new sound.

Leah Hinton formed El Schlong in Dunedin, 2003, along with fellow music student Nick Baldwin on bass. They learned their craft in the city’s DIY student punk/metal scene before moving to the country’s capital in 2005. This winter, El Schlong is hunkering down in a shed in the middle of a paddock in Masterton to begin writing their third album.

Booker T Jones is undeniably one of the most legendary organ players of all time. His legacy was cemented five decades ago through his work with Stax Records and his band the MGs. Bernie Worrell from Parliament and the late Ray Manzarek from the Doors and, legends in their own right, have cited him as a key influence. Needless to say that Jones has nothing left to prove in the music industry. So when in 2009 he released a new album, Potato Hole and The Road To Memphis in 2011 people were surprised with his

1983’s Speaking in Tongues was Talking Heads’ first studio release in three years, and picked up where the 1980 Afro-punk fusion Remain In Light left off. The LP finally made sense of the Heads’ marriage of art-school intellect and funky dance floor soul, while still remaining purposeful and playful.

At the time of release the nine songs on Speaking in Tongues — the group’s first self-produced studio album after having worked with Brian Eno on the first three — demonstrated a new precision and flair, which quite possibly make it their most influential album. It was a breakout album that added commercial success to their

staying power.

Sound The Alarm is the next in a long line of career defining moments for Jones. Just like his previous two releases this album is peppered with guest appearances from younger artists keen to work with this iconic figure. Contemporary soul men Mayer Hawthorne and Anthony Hamilton are along for the ride along with pop dive Estelle and blues rocker Gary Clark Jr.

These contributions reflect the tone of Sound The Alarm as it veers from feel good R&B (‘All Over the Place’) to gritty blues workouts (‘Father Son Blues’ that features Ted Jones, son of Booker). Sandwiched in between them all is the 60s rave up ‘Fun’, a bubbly concoction of hand claps and horn riffs. Just like The Road To Memphis before it, this is a record that shows off not only Booker T’s influence but also his diversity. This old dog has a seemingly endless supply to new tricks to wow us with.

WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

already critically acclaimed status, and made the band a household name in rock ‘n’ roll.

From album opener ‘Burning Down the House’, with its tumbling drum breaks, springy synths and desolate keys, the rapid zigzagging synths and cleverly articulated guitar and percussion of ‘Girlfriend Is Better’, through to some John Lee Hooker-style blues on ‘Swamp’, Speaking In Tongues takes the Heads’ love affair with funk to the next level with complex rhythms and an extended cast of players (most notably Parliament keyboard legend Bernie Worrell and the classically trained funk maestro Wally Badarou).

But despite the cleverly crafted musicality, Speaking In Tongues is an album that does not flaunt its cleverness. With alluring hooks and deviant rhythms, the real art here is the incorporation of disparate elements from pop, punk and R&B into a coherent, celebratory dance ethic. Little did David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison know it back in ‘83, but they managed to create a new model for great party albums to come.

Everyone’s favourite bald-headed, Polytechnic-mocking, crass-talking comedian takes to the stage. After winning the prestigious Billy T Award in 1998, Brendhan travelled and performed at international comedy festivals throughout the world hitting the UK pro comedy circuit in 2000 and notched up some 300 comedy club shows in his first year alone.

One of the city’s most popular performance and rehearsal venues is offering a fun-filled, enlightening holiday programme. There’s Circus Arts, teaching you the basics of defying gravity and tumbling through the air. Or try your hand/feet at contemporary dance and hip hop.

This is a twisted, bawdy, silly, romp through your favorite science fiction tales where time isn’t the only thing that’s warped! This raucous, irreverent satire illegally marries The Matrix with Star Trek, Star Wars and all things Keanu. It boldly goes where it’s never been before.

As the title suggests it’s a mix of burlesque and zombies. No, not quite Zombie Strippers… but it will be tantalising – sometimes in all the wrong ways! The largest, darkest revue in the country. The show combines the IBC’s trademark mix of live music, dance, depravity, burlesque and warped humor.

Justifiably proud of a ridiculously awesome premise, Pacific Rim lovingly embraces its blockbuster status, clichés and all – refreshingly without any post-modern nonsense, knowing winks at the audience or ounce of satire. The film does exactly what it says on its ludicrously oversized walking tin: Giant robots looking cool while pummeling the crap out of massive monsters. Those expecting a cerebral dimension to Guillermo del Toro’s $200 million action epic may leave a little disappointed, but he revels in the sheer fun of Pacific Rim’s concept and scale in a way that’ll excite and engross those on board with the concept.

Sensory overload is the order of the day, Pacific Rim packing a punch with its bold and bright colour palette, sheer size and mega volume. Yet somehow, as ridiculous as it sounds, there’s an enjoyable subtlety and elegance to how deftly del Toro sets up his world and illustrates the scale of its gladiators inside the film’s

opening few minutes.

The fight sequences do get a little same-y, largely set at night and in the ocean – though we glimpse some short sequences elsewhere. The film also arguably peaks pre-climax with the most brilliant neon bombardment of the senses since Enter the Void – two 50m combatants spectacularly duking it out in late night downtown Hong Kong.

It’s hard to believe Pacific Rim has a 131-minute running time, sustaining attention throughout and ripping along with little of the between-set-piece slump common to other blockbusters. And without a single line of dialogue from a villain, a tired retread of a reluctant hero’s journey or wasting any time trying to ground itself in a gritty reality. We all better hope this makes plenty of money, because del Toro just showed Hollywood how a blockbuster should be done.

A sports documentary that sets out to prove that age is no limit when it comes to athletic triumph, following eight pensioners from four different continents with over 700 years between them as they compete in the World over 80s Table Tennis Championships in Inner Mongolia.

Each fall, The Center for Cartoon Studies invites 20 of the world’s most promising cartoonists and graphic novelists to a village in Vermont for a no-holds-barred education in comics. Those who complete the two-year program earn a Master of Fine Arts degree and are ready to face the uncertainty of a career in one of the world’s most labour-intensive art forms.

Few cases in the history of true crime are as intriguing as that of Zodiac, a bizarre gunman in an executioner’s hood, who taunts the police with dozens of letters containing eerie messages and cryptograms. Director David Fincher captures the story of the infamous killer who terrorised the city.

Cosentino has already achieved what many performers have only dreamed of: Runner-up 2011 Australia’s Got Talent, a three times Australian Award winning Magician, 2012 winner of the Merlin Award for Most Original Magician and sell out shows.

In the brand new season, Patrick Jane’s hunt for serial killer Red John escalates. For years, Patrick Jane has patiently tracked his nemesis and played Red John’s cat and mouse games. With one of his accomplices now in custody, Patrick senses that Red John is closer than ever.

Episodes of The X Factor NZ are here! The hit show concludes on Sunday. With the three remaining acts performing in a final show, followed by the results show which will see the winner named on Monday. This week’s finale will see the series’ contestants having everything to sing for.

Weird is as weird does. and that Lynch does very weird indeed.

He’s out-psyched the psycho’s with movies like Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart, made one of the freakiest (and most critically acclaimed) TV series of all time, and now, almost on a whim, he’s staking his claim as a weirdo-musician non-parallel.

The Big Dream is his second studio LP, following-up on 2011’s super-trippy effort, Crazy Clown Time. That album was notable for the presence of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s singer, Karen O, as well as featuring one of the more disturbed music video’s you could ever imagine (which was naturally filmed by the multi-talented Lynch himself).

But where Crazy Clown Time was uneven yet chock-full of berserk ideas, The Big Dream finds Lynch operating at a new level of musical consistency. it’s an effort that deserves kudos.

Lynch handles the primary song-writing and performance duties here; writing 11 out of the album’s 12 tracks, excluding his very original take on the Bob dylan folk classic, ‘The Ballad of Hollis Brown.’ it was all recorded over several months at Lynch’s asymmetrical studio, with assistance from engineer and friend dean Hurley, who also contributes production and instrumentation on The Big Dream.

Nothing has changed between the two studio albums in terms of Lynch’s creative process, as the man himself points out: “Most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and then we go sideways from there. What comes out is a hybrid, modernised form of low-down blues.”

and that’s what Lynch has dubbed his style as - ‘modern blues.’ at the heart of these blues is his ever-growing affection for the guitar, an instrument he’s still finding his way with but - much like everything else he does - manages to provoke in new directions. On The Big Dream there’s some powerful reverb with that guitar, something he layers up against his oddly child-like and fragile vocals.

The album kicks off in what could only be described as ‘Lynchian fashion,’ opening with the title track and our newest re-introduction to Lynch’s alien voice. “it’s the big dream, the big dream... the biiiiig dream,” he intones. it’s a mantra that prepares you for what’s to come,

the dream, within the dream, within the dream (something Lynch does better than anyone else, long before Chris Nolan ever came up the sleeper-agents of Inception).

We take a trip to Twin Peaks on ‘star dream Girl,’ with handclaps and his favourite guitar forming the backbone of a song that could have played while agent dale Cooper drove through the glades of america’s most twisted (imaginary) township.

‘Last Call’ is an erie, beat-laden, electronic warning. Not overly sinister but thought provoking and a pointer to... something. david probably only knows.

‘The Ballad Of Hollis Brown’ stands out, not just for those haunting, damaged lyrics, but the way in which they’re delivered by Lynch and held together by Hurley’s drums and those ever present guitars. if you don’t know the dylan version, or the one by Nina simone, then hopefully this will entice you to seek out those other two, just to see how beautifully worked each is. it’s a great story of desperation and being dirt-poor - with Lynch’s version standing-up surprisingly well in comparison to the more prestigious, earlier two.

and that’s all part of the beauty of this charming-yet-nuts, director/actor/painter/musician, that when you think you have him in your sights, he stops, turns, and then walks off in another direction. He did it on film when, out of the blue, he created a straight-forward piece of heartland america with The Straight Story. He’s doing it on a smaller scale - and with much more subtlety - on The Big dream.

But don’t see each song as a breakdown of that, because The Big Dream is not so much the sum of its parts as being a part of something else. Lynch is a big one for interconnectivity so that would make a lot of sense. There’s a bigger picture at work but a lot of it is unseen.

GROOVE GEARSOPHIA CUSSELLNATURAL BORN LOVER, FULL TIME BABE FOR CLASH

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Clash is a diamond in the rough. Escaping the rest of Newmarket, it’s like stepping into a time portal to London in the 70’s.

Which historical figure had some wicked style? Frieda Kahlo.

What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? PJ Harvey. She can wear a turtleneck and a feathery hat at the same time like it’s no big thing.

Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Misogynistic T-shirts and boring socks, not necessarily at the same time.

What’s the must-have look this season? Plaits in your hair and necklines that creep all the way up.

Colours/patterns big this season? Deep reds and purples like on the Oxblood Cambridge Satchel. Those colours in plaid would be good too. Also, anything that matches from head to toe. That’s cool.

What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A denim jacket as close to Bill Cunningham’s (Smog) as possible.

What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? Something that your grandma would happily approve of. I always love it when my grandma says she likes my outfit because she’s seen so many in her time.

Everyone should own at least one good… Candle! Two even.

Hyphenate three words to describe your style: Pepper-Ann-esque

Popcap and EA have released the hotly anticipated follow-up to Plants vs. Zombies ahead of it’s planned late-July date, but only to people based in Australia and New Zealand. The staged release, producer Allen Murray explained, is to ensure it’s actually ready for prime time, ahead of it’s launch in the larger US and European territories.

“We want to have at least a four-week testing period,” Murray explained, “so that we can get the game out there, check how our systems are functioning, check how people are using it, and be able to make one or two patches to adjust if needed — and then check to make sure everything’s stable before rolling it out.”

A free to play universal app for iOS devices, Plants vs. Zombies 2 requires a minimum of iPhone 4, iPad 2, or fourth generation iPod Touch, iOS 5.1 or higher, and is a 42.9 MB download.

Square Enix have unveiled a special, limited edition version of the upcoming Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster. According to Phil Elliot, Square Enix’ head of community, it’s only coming as an option for purchasers of the PlayStation 3 version of the game; there are no plans to offer a similar variant edition on PS Vita (where the game will also be available.)

The limited edition includes an exclusive art book, showcasing concept art used in the development of both X and X-2, as well as special packaging and a message from the game’s producer, Yoshinori Kitase.

Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD, a remastered version of both Final Fantasy X (2001) and Final Fantasy X-2 (2003), was originally announced at Tokyo Game Show in 2011. The publisher is yet to announce a release date for the title, however it is expected sometime in 2013.

If you haven’t used the Wonderbook before, here’s a really really quick recap:

It’s an experience that combines your PS3, TV, the PlayStation Eye, a Move controller, and a physical book with special graphics printed on it to create an augmented reality experience that really has no peers. You sit in front of the TV and flip through the book; you are then shown on the TV (along with the book and your living room), and extra things are added as if they’re coming out of the pages of the book.

The second title to be released for Wonderbook is Diggs Nightcrawler. It looks like a film noir cartoon adventure, and features nursery rhyme characters such as Itsy Bitsy spider, the Three Little Pigs, and Mother Goose, amongst others.

Diggs himself is an inchworm in a trench coat. He’s a private detective, thrust onto the case to try and work out who has bumped off his friend. (Humpty Dumpty, off a wall. He had a great fall, apparently.) Diggs has been framed for the murder of Humpty, so with the pigs on his tail (literally), he’ll need your help to find the pieces of shell scattered around the surrounding area, so that he can help put Humpty together again . . . and clear his own name, of course.

The player is dragged into the action immediately, as Diggs notices you looking at him, and asks for your help with the case. He needs you to turn the book around, and turn the radio on by waving your hand. You can interact with similar objects, as well as spinning the book to view different areas of the many scenes, tilt it to dip a lamp over an area that needs illuminating, or by shouting and waving at the PlayStation Eye to let Diggs know when it’s safe to break cover and make a dash for freedom.

With a playful look and feel, an engaging storybook setting, and the sheer magic of using the WonderBook, Diggs is enjoyable for kids and something adults will also gain the occasional chuckle from.

UNKNOWN MOrTaL OrCHesTra’s sound has created a stir through-out the music sphere. Their daft hooks coupled with fuzzy, psych-pop grooves, all connoting a vintage sound that pushes towards the future. Their rise to fame, however, began in a tricky balancing act between isolation and communication, says UMO singer, guitarist and songwriter ruban Nielson.

“One of the things i used to do when i was in New Zealand was hang out in the mall [by myself]. i like being around people, but i didn’t want any-body to actually interact with me. The thing with the band is, it’s a means to communicate with people in a way that i feel comfortable with.”

The recording process of Nielson’s tunes have been widely publicised as introspective nocturnal affairs. Late-night tinkering with recording equipment, rummaging through vinyl relics, giving new soul to an antique sound that barely saw the light of day. The process created a texture that the band’s success has been riding on since ‘Ffunny Friends’ popped up on the music blog circuit in 2010.

“i’d run things in and out of the computer, from a vintage fader into a tape machine, and then record off my tape machine back into my laptop, and just play around with it. i feel like the texture of the sound gives you a whole other thing, where you can mess with people’s emotions, ya know,” the ex-Mint Chicker explains.

Nielson admits this arduous process put him in a strange mindset, some-what intoxicated by his huge desire to find a particular shade and tone, and run riot with it.

“it just puts me in a weird space, it’s more than just the song, and the lyrics and stuff... When i’m making it with all this equipment...[a pause, and the hint of a devilish grimace]… there’s something strange in my brain hap-pening when i’m writing.”

Currently in Minneapolis having a few drinks before their show, UMO have been touring the Usa for just over two weeks, and prior to that played a month’s worth of sold out gigs in europe. Nielson is obviously impressed with this feat, and his tone lightens when listing the bands they have supported.

“We played with the Flaming Lips in Paris and deerhunter in denmark.

[Getting] to hang out with Wayne Coye was amazing”.

While their self-titled debut album heralded Nielson’s return to the music industry with a collection of psych-tinged nuggets, all gritty with a break-beat soul charm, the second release – the aptly titled II – marks a progressive step in their evolution. The song structures are ever-winding and the guitar work is a maze of intricate finger-flexing that carries each number through murky, opiated grooves. This sonic maturity follows from a mindset specifically attuned to the live show.

“When i made the first album, i wasn’t really thinking of it being a band at all. i was just having fun and not thinking about how it’s going to translate live. The second one is a lot easier to play [because we acknowledged] this is a band that’s gonna have only three people, and we’re gonna have to make all the sounds ourselves. it’s a bit more geared towards the live show.”

in terms of their live performance, UMO are a force to be reckoned with. Us music channel Fuse TV earlier this year named them one of the 30 Must see acts at sXsW, an iconic music festival based in austin, Texas. and while stepping from the guitarist position into the frontman spotlight was an initial shock to the native New Zealander, it proved the perfect cata-lyst for change he needed after a rough breakup with The Mint Chicks.

“it kinda came when i was ready for something else. i didn’t wanna be involved in the music industry anymore, i didn’t wanna be in a band, and have all of the conflicts with bandmates, i just wanted to get away from that whole world.

“it’s kinda weird by myself with another band. it comes to the point where an opportunity [is] coming up and you just can’t not try it out”

For seizing the opportunity and giving those first UMO demos a shot, Mr Nielson, we are all glad.
