rEm SlEEPS REM have ofcially called it quits. The band said on theirwebsite: “To all our fans and friends: as REM, and as lifelongfriends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a dayas a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, ofnality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepestthanks for listening.”

Note the words “as a band” – does this mean they’ll eachbe doing their own thing? With over 30 years together, youcan hardly blame them for deciding to close the curtains onthe REM show. But with so much history, it would be hardfor each member to stop recording, playing or touring coldturkey. In other REM news, there’s a picture oating aroundonline of Michael Stipe’s dick. No joke.

In BrIef...Thom Yorke and his other band that isn’tRadiohead are close to nishing their album.Atoms For Peace , which features Flea fromRed Hot Chilli Peppers , Beck drummer Joey

Waronker , Nigel Godrich and Mauro Refoscoshould be putting out the album early nextyear.

Donald Glover is doing raps again. Under themoniker Childish Gambino , the Community  actor put out the music video for ‘Freaks andGeeks’ a while ago, and now he’s back withanother song called ‘Bonre’. Much like theupsettingly boring ick Mystery Team , thisGlover performance would be better if itincluded Aubrey Plaza.

Tori Amos’ new album has “a uniquesound different than any of her previousrecords”. Night of Hunters was recordedentirely acoustically, and the album cover

And speaking of Best Coast and staunch, individual women, Lana Del Rey has a newnickname – Worst Coast. The singer iscopping a bit of meme-like ack for thoseluscious lips that have turned out to be fake(probably) and is being referred to as “amarketers wet dream”, which is ridiculous. So what if she was a failed singer back

Film NEWS The 1983 hit Scarface was a remake of the 1932 crimelm of the same name. What goes around comesaround – Universal is prepping a lm that shows animmigrant to America who rises to the top of gangster-

A few weeks ago we mentioned Jay and Seth VS The Apocalypse – more news on that front with DannyMcBride , Craig Robinson and James Franco also castin the ick. It just gets Apatow-ier by the day.

Ice Cube has approached John Singleton (Boyz n theHood) to think about directing the unconrmed yetanticipated N.W.A. lm.

Warpaint will be re-releasing their debutFools as a two-disc set via Rough Trade ,which will include the Exquisite Corpse EP

Nashville garage-rockers The Ettes havesigned to Shock Records and are releasingWicked Will in mid-October. There’s a greatvideo oating around for their single‘Excuse’ which features everyone’s favouritegeek Patton Oswalt as the clip’s director.Well worth a watch.

Man, these guys have been touring for so long.

Seriously – it’s been over a month. And now they’re

playing their last gig and it’s in their hometown.

They’ll probably say, “We toured everywhere but

Basementfest.2011 kicks off this week on Wednesday,

for jive drapes like you. Tourettes and his buddies lead

the charge in this basementfest.2011 featurette.

Sometimes you go to Karaoke and your only option

is to do your best Louis Armstrong impression, sing

iconic songs from ‘80s movies or jam some Celine

Dion. Clearly the organisers of Karaoke Dick have had

enough of this, which is why you can sing shit like

Peaches, Lawrence Arabia or Slayer.

Millions – literally, millions – of people have seen Ria

Hall sing. Why? Because she’s such a good singer that

she performed at the opening ceremony of the Rugby

World Cup. So she’s basically one of the most watched

New Zealand singers ever. Most watched... that sounds

creepy. But not as creepy as most followed.

Dance! It’s everywhere from babies in nappies

jumping to some bullshit on YouTube to someone’s

grandmother tapdancing at her 70th birthday party

while she’s wearing a top-hat and a leotard (thanks for

that image, Nana). It’s also at the Q Theatre on Queen

Kevin James stars as another family-friendly guy

will be fart jokes and a close-up of Kevin James’ face

when it gets pushed into elephant shit or something

like that.

It’s not the actual Rhythm & Vines, but it’s a teaser.

Katy B, Diplo, Magnetic Man, Digitalism and Ruby

WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER

“iT’S HArD To SPELL, BuT EAS To GooGLE.”

In the comortably distant ‘90s, a fteen-year-old took home Roger

Handy’s Made In Japan: Transistor Radios of the ‘50s & ‘60s rom the Hutt

Library. What practicing nerd Luke Rowell stumbled upon was a double

page spread o a radio sat in ront o a mushroom cloud. “I held onto that

or two or three years,” says Rowell, who ended up using that image as

inspiration or band name Disasteradio, when he frst uploaded music

onto mp3.com at 17. Rowell’s older brother also wanted the name or a

“harder” band, but relinquished rights when he frst saw Luke’s website.

“I grew up nerdy,” Rowell explains o his technological relationship, and

laughs that he wasn’t a very good one. Fast orward a ew years and the

laughs have kept coming or Disasteradio, creating an impressive backcatalogue and a massive touring log that secretes inectious happiness.

Disasteradio is just Luke Rowell, “Though I used to say it’s me and my

computer,” he laughs. Speaking rom his parents place in the “weird”

Hutt Valley “ull o car yards and churches”, he proesses living a hobo’s

lie, not interested in working or someone else because he wants to

work on his own time. This candidly rank sel-perception is something

that Rowell exudes in his own work. Disasteradio is about a de-

personalisation or Luke – it’s him viewing himsel objectively. “I don’t

let my work suer rom my own ego,” he states. Disasteradio is about

artistic sense, yet it also delivers an overwhelmingly satisying amount o

ast paced spectacle.

Rowell’s ather helped pave the way to electronic music planting a seed

early on, sharing the most-selling electric artist o all time Wendy Walter

Carlos with his son growing up. Rowell attributes the artist to helping

legitimise the thread o electronic music between computers and videogames with “quote unquote real music”. His parents’ two old mood synth

records, one o them Popcorn by Hot Butter, also played a part in early

lie. Don’t be ooled though: Disasteradio, courtesy o Rowell, ventured

through the musical wilderness plugging into ‘80s new wave, surpop

(like San Fran’s Mermen), and that modern universal rite o passage that

is ‘90s music – spearheaded, o course, by Nirvana. Even though the

ormer hang in there, they’re nowhere near as important to Rowell as

Devo, Sparks and Thomas Dolby’s Blinded Me With Science.

I you’ve seen any o Disasteradio’s videos you’ll know Rowell is

accomplished at “sel mocking”. He legitimises himsel by “raming

things in a new light to highlight the truth… deconstructing who I am,”

he comments.

Disasteradio delivers convincingly pure joy. But Rowell tells that he

was “nerve-rackingly neurotically nervous” or the frst six or seven

years. An exhaustive tourer doing stints rom American basements to

Parisian estival stages, he’s generally pretty excited to get up on the

stage. Though he reckons one o his best ever gigs was with Regurgitator

in Australia, when he got up not eeling it at all and the crowd wento. Disasteradio is one o those acts that just wants to get everything

wet, sending out positive vibes and picturing the crowd as “a bucket to

fll with water”. Live, Rowell has the ability to get everyone eeding o

everyone else’s good time.

Disasteradio has an impressive 80 shows in our months record

under his belt. He isn’t too sure about travelling though, describing it as

“a weird place to be in – it’s scary but exciting”. He recalls being in the

Czech Republic on his 10-month tour o Europe where no one speaks

English; you just have to get things done. “It makes you be someone

else.” He also jokes about a estival show in Paris where he had a big pit

in ront o him and he kept turning around to check out the impressive

lighting rig behind him.

It’s airly easy to get your hands on Disasteradio, employing the

pay-as-you-like system. You can download Charisma at disasteradio.

MONO are a Japanese act layered in melodic instrumental intensity,

who regularly draw comparisons to Mogwai but share that back-scratch

that makes you love local acts Jakob and An Emerald City. Figuratively

speaking MONO is an instrumental portmanteau o experimental rock,

contemporary classical, noise and minimalism. For them, you could

say touring is a validation o their music. Auckland plays host to their

unique emotionally driven sound this weekend; or music lovers here’s

who they are and what they’re about.

Music writer and electric guitarist Takaakira Goto started composing

music in 1999 and began to look or other musicians, which lead him to

Yoda (electric guitar), Tamaki Kunishi (bass guitar, piano) and Yasunori

Takada (drums). Goto is still the songwriter; “Whenever we have time

o rom touring, I write the songs at home or a ew months. Then we

meet together at the studio to see i we can bring each song to lie. We

take one another’s opinion very seriously so that’s probably why wespend so much time in the studio together.”

MONO express a refned sense o emotion. Having been around or

over a decade now, Goto says they’ve become more conscious o the

sound they want to create, as well as their strengths and weaknesses

as a band. “Each album has been a stepping stone that has taught us

something we needed to learn to get to this point,” he reects. “With

that said, we now have a clearer vision o the emotion we want to

convey.”

A combination o things inspire MONO. “Lie, being on the road,

the world we live in, our personal journeys, stories, basically whatever

moves us,” Goto says. MONO come o as incredibly humble, with

Goto saying, “We have riends and amazing ans everywhere. Each

destination is meaningul to us.” It’s easy to see why, given that MONO

had difculty fnding an audience in native Japan. “We wanted to

branch out internationally. Until this day, we receive a better response to

our music overseas than we do within our own country.”

MONO is about live perormance. Goto says the best place to try out

new material is in this domain. “There is an interchanging o energies at

the live show that we cannot replicate anywhere else,” he says. “I wish

I had a way to explain it.” MONO’s principal concern is creating music

on their own terms. “As long as we are able to pursue music without

limitations, then we consider ourselves very lucky.”

Goto reects on his best memory with MONO – the New York

perormance with Holy Ground Orchestra. “It was incredible to look

back 10 years to when we started in the same city (NYC) with our frst

overseas show. Playing a show with a chamber orchestra is something

we’ve always wanted to try. It was all very surreal and exhilarating!”A live recording o this is their latest (2010) album, Holy Ground: NYC

Live With The Wordless Music Orchestra.

On the aspiration ront MONO have just fnished composing songs

or a new album. “We are now practicing daily to prepare or an early

recording next year. We just want to keep making music as we are and

have the opportunities to share it with others.” All going to plan, this

album should surace sometime in 2012.

Whilst hehas been likened to pretty-boy

Acousticguitars, utes, and pianos createa murky olk atmosphere, whichprovide an eerie backdrop topoetic personal lyrics.Scattered heavy sections providean abrupt change o pace, butthose waiting to hear mind-boggling drumming and technicalretwork will be disappointed.Heritage also loses some impactduring the last three tracks, whichsound like an anticlimactic jamsession. support rom both Drinkwateras Joe (who just wants toget back to his busty nurses)and Varela, whose constantswitching between beautiul, innocent Helen and scarytopless demon is as chilling as

it is eective. Similarly, the scriptworks well because the flm playsit straight rather than going orlaughs, while also grounding thestory in real-lie rumours aboutHitler’s ascination with blackmagic.

The only real problem withthe flm is that at a mere 83minutes long, the story eels alittle truncated, as i the moneyran out halway through. It mighthave helped, or example, to haveone more actor alongside Hill and

Drinkwater’s characters, whichwould have at least padded outthe story in a knock-them-o-one-by-one sort o way.

flm doesn’t need an insatiablebloodlust i it’s scary and tense.Sadly Shark Night 3D is

neither, despite a airly decentbody count o good lookingteens. Its totally preposterousstory has no problem tradingsuspense or a cheap laugh, which conuses the tone andcontinuously kills o anysense o danger that directorDavid R. Ellis (Snakes On APlane) attempts to build.Meanwhile, the menace o themany varieties o killer sharks

onscreen is hampered by theobviousness o their CGI.Despite all that, there’s

enjoyment to be ound in theshark-inested depths o thisflm. The action may be gummyrather than serrated but thereare at least two outrageouslyridiculous kills that will haveyou groaning in delight at theaudacity o their awulness.

It’s the flm’s lack o bite andmuddled tone that let it down. Not particularly thrilling, scary, gory or unny, Shark Night 3D

won’t be keeping anyone out othe water this summer.

The art is gritty and dark whichworks with the content o thestory. It could almost be describedas over-drawn or over-shaded, yet

M a w f stylsatnan alf-tuts n ucatnas nttanmnt tan a wf ctn tut, KimbleBent: Malcontent as ts usan wns.

The Random House-published comic is written bygraphic designer Chris Groszand based on an original bookby James Cowan. We ollow thestory o an American soldierwho deserts his regiment togo live with the Taranaki Maori

back in the mid 1800s.The story’s biggest problemlies with the titular characterKimble Bent. Portraying yourprotagonist as somethingo a coward is no way to winover audiences. As this is awork o non-fction (as we arelead to believe, at least) thenon-heroics o Bent can beunderstood, but don’t expectany hero’s journey here. Expect

the consistency o this stylisedpencilling rom ront to back setsand compliments the tone in itsentirety. The panels are laid out ina messy way and don’t ow theway most mainstream or evenindie-publication comics ow. You’ll

read let to right, right to let, down to up and every otherwhich-way you can think o. Itgets conusing, but not in anannoying way.

The appreciation or theway the storyteller is tryingto portray his story surpassesthe book’s oibles, and somewon’t fnd these oibles oibleyin the slightest. But the starkcontrast between the black onwhite art is worthy o note.

You’d be hard pressed to

fnd a better example o a herodifcult to root or. It’s KimbleBent’s story that’s being told, and he’s along or the ride. How much o it is true and howmuch is alse, we’ll probablynever know. But it’s orgottenhistory nonetheless, and in theend Grosz has told it well. WRITTEN BY SUMMER THERNOMME
