DALLAS BUYERS CLUBIt’s the age-old story: undergo a dramatic, physical transformation and get nominated for an Oscar. But as once just a bronzed, beach-babe Californian surfer dude and star of some of the worst rom-coms of all time (Fool’s Gold), it’s clear Matthew McConaughey’s development is more than just cosmetic. Delivering a harrowing and intense performance, this time he’s truly flexing his acting muscles instead of his biceps in this true story. Set in 1985, McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a homophobic, rough-as-guts, womanising cowboy. From gambling and drinking to fighting with anyone that’ll let him, he’s an outlaw of the worst kind. But when he’s diagnosed with Aids and given 30 days to live, the world as he knows it comes crashing down. Determined not to be beaten, he begins smuggling in antiviral drugs from Mexico and establishes the Dallas Buyers Club to

help people in a similar position. It’s a subject that’s still often skirted around, but there’s no way to hide from the ugly truth of this crippling illness in Dallas Buyers Club. The squeamish might find themselves shaken by McConaughey’s raw portrayal and the needle use, but it’s worth braving for such a gripping drama. Accolades have been pouring in for his performance, and they are well-deserved, as are those for Jared Leto, who plays transgender woman and Aids sufferer Rayon. An unlikely friendship forms between the two leads that brings a warm touch to a cold, hard subject. A must-see.LAURA WEASER

The first time I came across Broods I was foolish enough to dismiss them. The song was ‘Bridges’ and admittedly I made it through less than half of the song. Needless to say this EP is impeccable and I have a lot of repentance ahead of me. ‘Never Gonna Change’ opens the EP with a brilliant soundscape that feels deep with each of the layers interlocking perfectly with the other. The levels are balanced meticulously and so no one element drowns out another and they never compete. Track two continues the momentum. ‘Pretty Thing’ (which reminds me of Imogen Heap’s album Ellipse) is an expansion on its predecessor. It comes in with a catchy, but not cheesy, chorus and moments of pure melody. The sound of Caleb Nott and Georgia Nott’s vocals together is majestic. They’re the perfect match for each other and while Georgia takes center stage the smooth rasp of Caleb’s voice isn’t something to be overlooked. ‘Sleep Baby Sleep’ has been on repeat. Everything from the beat to Georgia’s vocals gives the

track an emotional quality that separate it from the others. Lyrically it feels more honest, more raw, and the background strings add to the tenderness of the lyrics and delivery. Broods share a label with Katy Perry, Elton John, Emeli Sandè and Beck. By the time you make it the closing track ‘Coattails’ it’s obvious why Capitol Records signed this brother-sister duo from Nelson. ‘Coattails’ becomes the surmise of everything the past five tracks have given. The beat is heavier, the chorus more anthemic and the vocal delivery as pure, epic and dynamic has it has been on the songs before it. Georgia Nott’s vocals are the simply put: perfection. They take centre stage on the EP and are complimented endlessly by brother Caleb’s instrumentation. They’re matched only by the songwriting, which is more poetic and emotional than we’re used to seeing in pop music. To say Broods are the next Lorde is wildly inaccurate - they’re something new and exciting on their own. SEBASTIAN MACKAY

PREVIEW: EVOLVE COMING TO PC, XBOX ONE, PLAYSTATION 4

Never heard of Evolve? That’s not a big surprise really, afterall, it was only announced a month ago. Things move pretty quickly in this industry sometimes, but rarely am I playing a game just weeks after the world first became aware of it.The gist of the experience is firmly rooted in the same stuff Left 4 Dead was crafted from; cooperative multiplayer shenanigans with more than a little bit of terror to keep you on your toes. There are four playable “hunter” characters, one of each must be present in every game, and playing them to their strengths is critical if you’re to succeed in defeating the ultra-powerful monster that lurks somewhere in the level.The four classes play quite differently to one another, too; there’s a damage-dealer, a healer, a trapper, and a utility-type, and there’s no way you’ll beat the beast by playing each one the wrong way.Then there’s the mixed motivations of the monster itself. This is where the name of the game comes from; by eating some of the “food” animals (the world is full of all kinds of beasties, not just the main monster), the monster earns the power necessary to evolve. Each step in its evolution grants the monster more power, and eating food also gives it a shield - giving the monster motivation to run away, and hunters all the incentive they need to track it down and kill it ASAP.Wait, motivation? Why does a monster need motivation? Because it’s player-controlled. While there are certainly similarities to Left 4 Dead (the monster is quite a lot like a Tank from that game), this asynchronous 4 vs. 1 multiplayer element, which gives Evolve a competitive aspect in addition to the obvious cooperative ones, is where the game really sets itself apart.All of this meshes together to form a cohesive whole that, while similar on the surface to other games you might have played, results in an entirely new experience. Not only that, but Evolve is incredibly fun to play - both as a hunter and as the monster. If you’ve been hankering for the next phase in multiplayer gaming after the excellent Left 4 Dead, it’s looking very much like Evolve could be just that.ALAN BELL

PREVIEW: THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINECOMING TO PC, XBOX ONE, PLAYSTATION 4

If you have been following the progress with TESO’s development, you will know it’s set in familiar land of Tamriel at a time when three distinct factions are vying for political dominance. If you’re not super familiar with The Elder Scrolls’ narrative, that’s a millenium before the events of the most recent game in the series (Skyrim) and 800 years or so before both the game before that (Oblivion) and the one before that (Morrowind.)The event at the core of the early story is the return of an old protagonist in the form of Daedic Prince Molag Bal. The three factions - the Ebonhart Pact (Nord, Dunmer, and Argonians), the Daggerfall Covenant (Orcs, Bretons, and Redguards), and the Aldmeri Dominion (Altmer, Bosmer, and Khajiit) - all commence their story in the same area. Players have a choice between character classes Nightblade, Templar, Sorcerer, and Warrior. Character skills are based around two weapon related slots, three class skills, and one ultimate skill. Trait points are divided between strength, vitality, and magic. With only one new point available per level, you have to make some hard choices in how you assign them.The look and feel of the game is very much like Skyrim. In fact, it was very hard to get away from this observation, as the graphical style is very similar in a lot of places (thankfully, though, there are regions which are a lot warmer than what Skyrim veterans would be used to.) The initial phases of the game have you playing largely solo. Because of this, and the Skyrim graphics, it’s just like playing another game in the series. There is a lot that is familiar in terms of the combat, crafting, and - of course - the core characters in the game.Exploration has always been a big part of the series and this game is no different, however this aspect of the franchise has had to be balanced with the need to have zones designed to challenge players at a specific character level. Accordingly, there is subtle use of storyline and zone shifts that ensure you don’t get out of your depth.There is no doubt that fans of the series will find a lot to like in this game, but it will be interesting to see how MMO players react to The Elder Scrolls when it releases in April.MIKE GUNN

It’s not often that I get to interview my own indie idols. To the student DJ, Yo La Tengo, along with the Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth, were the arty, angsty antidote to the over produced synth-drab of 80’s mainstream radio.

They were part of the gutsy DIY New York No Wave scene, determined to make their own music free of commercial constraints. And I admired them for it.

Still it was a huge surprise, to me at least, to discover that while I was digging the pioneer alt- music scene in the States, the appreciation was reciprocated over there. “Oh yeah.” laughs the bassist James McNew, “The music of your country was very important to us. I first became aware of bands like Chills and the Flying Nun label about 1987 and I never looked back. I was completely obsessed. I also went back in time and found out about Billy TK, the Spelling Mistakes and others like this. Their music just keeps on giving.”

And they’ve been going now, as a tight three, for over thirty years. But has McNew ever feel like a third wheel, given that sometimes couples orbit their own little worlds within the greater universe of the band? “Not at all. If I was in a band of seven others they’d be seven other world’s colliding. We’re been very close, experiencing things that only we understand, so I don’t think or worry about it or consider it a problem. We’re family. We don’t fight like other bands, so that’s part of our longevity. I read about the Kinks...there’s a story about Mick Avery trying to decapitate Dave Davies on stage with a cymbal. No one in Yo La Tengo has ever got to that stage,” he laughs. The band still continue to make challenging, satisfying alt-pop with an arty twist, and that also includes their latest album Fade, which by their own standards runs at a short 45 minutes. “Yeah,” he jokes “it’s like a Minute Men album, over before you know it!”

After chatting a bit, I learnt that McNew was once a young, budding journalist and even interviewed a Kiwi. “When I was younger I had a fanzine, called And Suddenly (‘87-’89). It was not very good. I used to do most of my interviews by post. It was great because I had all these souvenirs (letters) from the bands. Which is nice. 75% of my interviewing was done through the post. My best were done for the last issue, which I never put out. I did one of the earliest interviews with Galaxy 500 and I got a very generous letter from Chris Knox. I was heavily influenced by the music from New Zealand, as are the others in the band.” Yo La Tengo formed in Hoboken, New Jersey slap bang in the middle of the 1980’s, in a period of excess, Wall Street and Reagan. Originally a duo of husband and wife team Ira Kaplan (guitars, piano, vocals) and Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals) the band grew to include McNew (bass, vocals).

So given the band’s musical magpie tendencies and penchant for welding multiple styles and genres into each song then why make such a singularly short recording? “When we stared to write the songs were on the shorter side. Making a single album was very appealing; we found a way to express ourselves in a more concise way, natural and right but also a challenge.” True to word Fade is a mix of rock, lounge and art cool, in much the style that they’ve been making for over three decades now. Songs bounce from Velvet Underground (‘Is the enough’) to the psychedelic Johnny Cash experience of ‘Stupid Things’, and not far at all times are the influences of early Flying Nun bands. In this day and age of instant digital satisfaction it’s nice to see bands putting in the extra effort like the limited edition rework of Fade, a project labelled The Tree. It’s collaboration between the band and cartoonist Jim Woodring’s mysterious and psychedelic dream land immortalised in a hand drawn animation DVD; 3 soft-vinyl dolls, sculpted by Tomohiro Yasui, and a collection of new music and b sides. “We originally just wanted the tree idea but at the publisher’s suggestion Jim ended up designing these three little characters based on us” he chuckles.

“We’ve become a real art band.” Now they have their own statues. Would that ever happen to Chris Knox? Toy Love, indeed! TIM GRUAR

Art, at least for Kevin Starrs (frontman of Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats), is about creating something for yourself. It’s not designed to impress people and he does only what feels is right for him.

The type of attitude that places him firmly in control of what Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats are and will be. Void of posturing and the desire to please he sees it as a case of, in his own words, “if we alienate our fans, so be it.”

It’s dedication to being true to themselves that leads to the music being partly a combination of influence and ambition. “It’s a mixture of different influences that I have melded together, almost into a great big pot and then it comes out and that’s the music that we play.”

He laughs at their (trusty) Wikipedia definition of being a psychedelic doom band and says it wasn’t something he set out to be.“That’s just one of them things that people put on you (sic).”

Starrs tends more toward the definition of “psychotic rock with no bullshit” and it would be a crime to insinuate such a thing means lack of ambition.

Their brand of rock pulls together heavy riffs with dark lyrical content and melodies and harmonies. A style that Starrs says you don’t see much of in heavy music. “You don’t get a lot of that in heavy music and [our] vocals aren’t over the top screaming or anything like that. We have a clean sound and I plan everything out in advance so I know how it sounds in my head.” That’s no exaggeration.

Their latest record Mind Control is a concept about a man that believes he’s God and leads a death cult. For Starrs grandiose and well executed concepts are all part of what he does. “It’s something that’s a huge influence on the way I write. I need to have big concepts and ideas to write properly and then I break it down into different ideas.”

Concept albums are on the

cards for the foreseeable future or “at least the next couple of albums.” Says Starrs. Overall concepts make it easier to put the album together but the preproduction for each song is no less than impressive. “There is a lot of preproduction and research that goes into the songs. We already know the running order before we go into the studio. Each song is like a scene in a movie.”

And their signature sound is equal amounts ingenuity and studio production. They play, and record, on equipment from the ’50s and ’60s mixed in with new technologies. “It’s a mixture… it gives a great sound but the new technology has its place…you can get a good sound when you mix the digital with analogue.”

There isn’t much to be said, yet, in regards to a new album. Starrs says that they’re looking at having a single out later this year and recording late this year. He says that could led to an album early

2015 but preproduction wise there is a lot of work to be done. Although he does say: “There are somethings in there that will surprise people.”

It’s safe to say that they’re as committed as ever to remaining true to themselves. And for fans that means growth as well as the sound and songwriting ability that the band have built over the past few years. “[We’re going to keep] doing things our own way and not selling out, which we would never do, and staying true to ourselves and our beliefs and ideas.”

Playing WestFest is geographically further than Starrs says he ever saw the band coming. Bassist Dean Miller is a kiwi and while Starrs says Miller is happy to be home, nothing quite rivals Starrs’ excitement to look around.

Starrs may be a modest and soft spoken Englishman but he and the band’s music is certainly far from it. They reached into their own territory with their debut album Volume 1 and have gone on to cement it with 2013’s Mind Control. The two biggest questions are what’s coming next and when? But more pressingly, is how big an impact they’ll make at WestFest. SEBASTIAN MACKAY

Chet Faker is coming to NZ and he’s bringing an updated, road tested, and versatile live show with him. It’s a one man show that’s run by loops and mini controls. Faker says it has more groove than it’s previous incarnation and he’s changed up the arrangements of his songs for the show. “You can move to this one more because it’s more beat orientated. I’ve tweaked the songs and have a different version.”

It also allows for a stream of conscious type playing that means he’s not bound to a song after song structure. “It allows me to keep running with a train of thought and it means that the song can keep going.” Being able to play unhindered is part of what adds to the show’s versatility, the other part being that it’s a solo show. Faker’s shows are notorious for getting crazy. Aside from a Canadian jumping on stage with gifts of hugs and decadent chocolate, he says the strangest thing was at a Field Day show he played. “I was throwing food at MO…when Skrillex was Djing. That was pretty weird.”

His show here is in support of his upcoming debut album Built On Glass. It’s an album that had three incarnations before being finished and Faker says

that now it’s finally done “all of my objectivity has gone out the door.” He set out to create the best work possible, but as he says, it kept changing until it reached this point. “I really wrote three albums. The first time I wanted it to be something people would like, but then I wasn’t happy with it so I deleted it. The second time I wanted to do an experimental record but I wanted to keep the pop elements I love so much.”

The result is a combination between the latter and Faker says he’s just happy that it’s finished. On the whole he says the album is more musically dense than the EP and it’s a big step forward. “On the EP I’d only just started and I didn’t know what I was doing. On the record I tried using new production techniques.”

Fun fact: he still uses the same guitar he’s always used on the album along with the “the same crappy microphone. It cost $20 and came with VHS player. It’s from the ‘80s.”

It was all written and record by Faker who rents a room in a heritage building. “It’s a cold room in an old meat market. It’s relatively soundproof.” A lot of

Faker’s recordings run straight through the gear so there’s no reverb or echo from the old building.

For Faker writing is a complex process. Most songs seeing several versions before they made it onto the album. “I go through phases where I introduce a concept or element. This time around the structure of the song really interested me.”

He aimed for a progressive structure over the classic verse chorus verse style. “Sometimes I get obsessed with a concept and I’ll write three songs with that concept and then the best one goes on the album.”

Faker says his approach changes from song to song and while you can set out to make a certain sound it may not be so straight forward. “You can aim for a certain type of music but you don’t always get what you aim for and then what’s there is what you get.”

For him the most important aspect is the process being pleasurable. “I just sit down and try to make music that’s pleasurable for me. I enjoy the process. I love that people love my music and I’m humbled and pleased that I get to do this for a job. It’s a blessing because my first priority is that I enjoy doing it.”

In total it took two years for him to write and record Built On Glass. He muses that people that set out to make music their job can be in danger of losing touch with what they’re creating.

“If what I do lost any authenticity then I’d walk away and find another job.” It’s been, in Faker’s own words, “long and arduous” getting to where he is now. And so saying he’d walk away is a testament to his passion.

Though he says he never set out to be signed he does shed some light on a misconception. “When I started out I never really wanted to get signed. There’s an understanding that when you get signed, you’ve made it.” SEBASTIAN MACKAY
