has been advised to undergo some rest & tests before

potentially taking a backwards step and making

    matters worse.

card used in the booking will automatically be

refunded. If you made your booking at a Ticketmaster

SPOTS AgAinThe Independent UK has reportedthat after two decades the stars

    behind British lm Trainspotting

are set to return for a sequel, as

the characters face a mid-life crisis.

Rumours of a sequel have circulated

since Irvine Welsh, the writer of

    the original Trainspotting novel,

wrote a follow up, Porno, in 2002.

Director Danny Boyle said a script

is in progress, and the plan is to

release the lm in 2016, on the 20th

anniversary of the original. This has

been a long time coming, Boyle told

    Canadian lm website The Playlist.

Theres always been this long term

plan for Trainspotting 2. He believes

that the entire cast could be re-

    assembled including the originals

star Ewan McGregor. I dont think

there will be any barriers to Ewan

or any of the cast coming back, the

    WED 20 MAr

    tHu 21 MArFri 22 MAr

Aussie rocker Paul Kelly has added three new concert

dates to his New Zealand tour this March. The multi-

    award-winning, critically revered songwriter will

make his way through his long-standing catalogue

of 19 studio albums accompanied by his nephew

Dan Kelly (also on guitar) and supported by Lydia Cole.

With a recording career spanning 40 years, Joan

Armatrading has been a formidable force in the

industry. The rst UK female singer songwriter to

have international success, she possesses an entirely

unique sound that ranges from jazz to true soul

to sophisticated pop and reggae, which is all tied

together and driven by her passionate guitar.

Sad to say it, but summer is drawing to an end, so

its time to serenade the season with Tahuna Breaks.

Their third album Shadow Light is a result of two

years and hundreds of hours experimenting and

    perfecting a dance-orientated funk-soul sound. Get

your groove on to their future hits and classic beats.

Born one of seven children, the US singer has never

been one for convention. His breakthrough single

Polk Salad Annie introduced the world to his brand of

swampy country soul and became a world-wide hit.

The last few years have seen a critical re-evaluation

of his work, accompanied by his album of duets with

    country superstars.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse comprised of Billy

Talbot, Ralph Molina and Frank Poncho Sampedro

is packed full of older but wiser talent. The shows

promise to showcase both new material from their

recently released album Psychedelic Pill and the

    classics.

For those of you who havent been introduced before,

the DHDFDs (rumored to mean Dont Have Dogs For

Dinner) are a four-piece New Zealand garage punk

band, who formed in Point Chevalier. Their live shows

have drawn acclaim and controversy with anarchy

and chaos in their performances, in true punk style.

Back with their nest fueled dance-oor drum & bass,

Black Sun Empire will blow the lid off Bacco Room.

Since emerging in 2000, theyve continued to develop

their own unique style of phat beats and bass,

releasing numerous singles and four full-length LPs,

establishing themselves as leaders in the eld.

Not to be confused with the ginger character from

Harry Potter, this US jazz icon best known for his

work with James Brown is sure to stun you with his

larger than life talent. The trombone player has never

made playing a brass instrument look so sexy and if

he wasnt near 70, he might be my type.

Multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey is bringing his tried

and tested live trio (Mick, Rosie Westbrook, JP Shiloh)

to our shores with the sole purpose of shaking out

some demons from his latest work Sketches From The

Book Of The Dead they are promising surprises so

keep an eye on his sleeves, long or short!

Its been 33 years since his death,

but the grave cant stop Jimi from

    releasing yet another studio album.

People, Hell And Angels holds twelve...

um... sorta new tracks. New in the

sense that this is the rst time theseversions of the songs have been

    released. However, there are other

cuts of said tracks already out there

    in the muso-sphere.

    Theres nothing revelatory on the

album, but you do get an idea of

    what Jimis direction might have

been had he survived past that

    magical age of 27.

What you really get here is stone-cold

    conrmation (Not that its necessary)

    of James Marshall Hendrixs almost

meta-human ability to play guitar. Its

beyond amazing what he could do

with a Fender in his hands. It was - inthe old-testament sense of the word -

    RIGHTEOUS.

You also get a taste of Jimi and his

    fellow, band of Gypsys ability

to turn a freewheelin jam into

    something signicant.

Its a beautiful thing to hear Jimi, plus

his band compadres, Billy Cox (Bass)

and Buddy Miles (Drums), work their

mojo in Hendrixs own Electric Lady

Studios (Along with others). Theres a

supremely uid feel to what they laid

    down during these sessions, which

occurred following the release of the

    iconic Electric Ladyland.

Opener, Let Me Move You sets the

tone: with guitar, bass, drums, sax

    (From Lonnie Youngblood, the Prince

Of Harlem) mixing a molotov cocktail

of esty rock music and casually

lobbing it through the window of

    your ears.

And naturally, the blues vibe is strong

across the whole album. Jimi rips

into Bleeding Heart like a wolf into a

slab of meat, cranking up the bluesy

growl and sounding like hes having

an absolute blast while doing it. Hear

My Train A Comin is more of the same,

    with some surgeon-like solo-work

from Hendrix, tempered by the cool

playing of both Cox and Miles.

Okay, so the album itself can feel

disjointed and bitsy thanks to the

    pulled together and unnished

nature of whats on show. But thats

just the way the cheese grates, and its

hard not to feel the sense of fun here,

    not to mention talent, highlighted

by some spot-on production and a

    glorious lack of overdubs.

This isnt the denitive Hendrix but

thats okay, weve got tons of that

already. This is like sitting in the room

with him and hearing a casual session

    rst-hand.

    Alyx Duncans gracefully assured

debut feature The Red House is not

just one of the best lms about

    cross-cultural romances Ive seen

in a while, its also one of the most

    deeply romantic period.

    Casting her real-life 60-something

parents, Lee Stuart and Meng Jia,

at the centre of this ctionalised

    story, Duncan captures an unspoken

    closeness between two people that

    cannot be manufactured through

    performance. Theres something

    pure and human about their

unaffected presence that allows us to

understand or more so, feel their

bond, and see how theyve been able

to overcome social barriers such as

language and culture over the years.

The sliver of a narrative Jia returning

to China to care for her ailing parents,

    while Lee, an environmental activist,

    joins her later is expounded

with hushed intimacy as the pair,

    often in voiceover, ruminate on

    their relationship. Shot over a

period of three years, the exquisite

    cinematography credited to four

    different people, including Duncan

herself impresses in its unity of

    vision. From the comforting, tucked-

away idyll of their home in the

Hauraki Gulf to the hypnotic, Edward

    Burtynsky-esque otherworldliness

    of noisy industrial development

    in China, Duncan demonstrates a

    seasoned documentarians eye for

    place and detail.

    Modest, meditative and rewarding

in a way that Kiwi lms rarely are,

The Red House pulls the viewer into

a world where love and landscape

collide in a constant state of ux,

    negotiation and mystery.

    GOT SOME COOL SHT YOU

WANT TO SEE ON THS PAGE?SEND US AN EMAL [email protected]

Through the God of Warseries, weve formed

a strong bond with Kratos. Whether he was

stabbing a mindless cyclops in the eye, pulling out

the brains of sad minotaurs, or shaking his sts at

the gods from a distance, we felt his cause was a

worthy one. Now that we all know how his story

ends, we nd out how it began - with Ascension.

While the game doesnt launch with the

franchises expected sense of epicness, it doesnt

take long forAscension to start delivering the

satisfying brutal hack and bloody slash that weve

all grown to love. The polished controls of the

series are still pleasingly intact and the combat,

which is the majority of the game, is still thehighlight.

The all-new Blades of Chaos imbibe different

powers as you progress; for example, the Fire of

Ares makes a crispy barbecue of your foes, while

the Ice of Poseidon freezes them. Further down

the line, youll get to add on the Lightning of

Zeus that produces a satisfying electric-shock to

every attack and the Soul of Hades even gets the

    undead in on the action.

In typical GoWfashion, there are times when the

difculty ramps up to almost nightmare status.

Challenging gameplay is welcome but here it feels

more like a frustrating oversight, when compared

    to the overall difculty curve.

On the surface, multiplayer is pretty simple. Whilethere are a variety of modes on offer, theyre all

largely based on concepts that are familiar to

anyone who has ever played a multiplayer game.

Its in the layers on top of this that Ascension

delivers something extra; an x-factor that delivers

enough unique difference to make Ascension a

    worthy multiplayer experience.

You run around suitably God of War-esque

environments with a (non-Kratos) character who

wields a lot of (Kratos-like) weaponry. You level

up, capture ags, and - of course - eviscerate lots

of similarly equipped player characters (and get

whipped by same.) It lacks the balance and polish

of the more mature online titles out there, but its

doing something new, so it gets a free pass in that

    department this time around.

    A worthy - if not quite god-like - experience.

WOU YOU KOW it? Ive jut fed, bathed and put them both

down and I have 10 minute before inger ongwriter Joan rmatrading

i cheduled to call. Im half way through checking out her new album

when my two year old wander in brandihing a milk bottle demanding

a top up. she become eaily ditracted by the muic on the Youube

clip and plop herelf right down in front of my laptop. ight then Joancall. It 6.45 in the at her end. she up, crubbed and dreed. It

7.45 in the P here; Im itting amongt the dinner dihe and taring at

my deant toddler. Very rock n roll, he acknowledge, uppreing

laughter, but you have to do what you have to do.

Whilt reearching for thi I became aware of what a private and hy,

peron rmatrading can be (ironic ince Im involuntarily haring my

private life with her). nd, up front he warn me not to delve too deeply.

If I go quiet, youll know why. Yet I cant help noting how warm and

generou he i. Perhap he aware of my predicament. Perhap it

that condence that come with performance, being lot in the moment.

Ye, it funny, that I wa painfully hy when I tarted out. I wanted

to jut write, initially. ot perform. I wa encouraged into it, and I

found that when Im lot in the ong then I can have the condence toperform them and really let it out. I note that many of her lyric are

autobiographical, for a private peron. sometime. very writer, be

they jazz or heavy metal write about relationhip and love. We have

to. But Im not going to explain my lyric or ong. he litener have to

    interpret thoe for themelve.

a hy, afro-headed waif with a big, deep and condent voice

rmatrading hit the cene back in the early 70 with ove and

ffection, show some motion and continued into the 80 with e,

yelf, I, Walk Under adder and rop the Pilot. nd although he

may have faded from the O chart over recent year he till been

prolically clocking up 19 tudio album. he lat threeInto the Blues,

This Charming Life and Starlightare impreive for two reaon. I played

all the intrument on thoe myelf, becaue I had thee idea in my headand I want ure anyone ele could undertand what I wa trying to do.

lo, each album had a particular tyle. you may know I like to write

in different tyle - blue, acoutic, rock, reggae, jazz. For Into the Blues I

wanted to focu jut on a blue tyle and tried hard not to veer off coure.

But once I go tarted it wa eaier to follow that coure. nd for This

Charming Life I had a pop theme going. I realied during the lat one that

I had a jazz theme to nih, o Starlightha a different feel again.

a holder of a Bachelor of rt (onour) in itory I wa expecting

rmatrading to have a paionate undertanding of the technical

apect of muicology. I hated thoe exercie. I have alway been amuically free thinker. I play what I want. If I tart playing an at

and hit a B harp and it t then I ll keep my happy mitake. I dont

want rule retricting me. uic ha thi hitory, it reference itelf and

you get to the point where it need to ound like one thing to become

    omething ele.

One of the line that bet um up rmatrading and her work i revealed

in the ingle ell e We can dare to be different/ but be different

together. I wa playing a how in Germany and there wa a Gothic

how down the road; all thee kid in white face paint, black clothe

and boot and outrageou hair. It occurred to me that in the unity to be

different in ociety they were all conforming in their group. On a maller

cale we do that playing unuual port that we dicover everyone doe

or litening to a different band, that it turn out all our friend have.hat what attract u to our friend. We eek to be different with them.

he bet example of thi wa when he toured 56 venue in the UK, with

a new act in every town. t the end of the gig rmatrading got all the

act together to meet and record. I noticed two thing. Individually they

were often hy - like me when I rt tarted out. But when they were on

tage they had the courage to change from introverted to extraverted. I

alo noticed that they were unique individual when they were in there

home town but together a a group thee different people were united. I

like to have a variety and a mix of tyle. nd being different together i

    part of that.

bout now Im reminded of how different my two year old i. While

Ive found talking to rmatrading facinating, my daughter ha lot all

interet and dropped off to leep on the beanbag in the corner. Oh, well, ittake all ort
