What is a microscope?

It is an instrument for viewing objects that are too small to be seen by the naked or unaided eye.

Types of microscopes

Compound (Light) Microscope - Compound microscopes are light illuminated

Dissection - A dissection microscope is light illuminated. The image that appears is three dimensional

Scanning Electron Microscope - SEM use electron illumination. It has high magnification and high resolution. The specimen is coated in gold and the electrons bounce off to give you and exterior view of the specimen. The pictures are in black and white.

Always carry with 2 hands

Only use lens paper for cleaning

Do not force knobs

Always store covered

Keep objects clear of desk and cords

Place the Slide on the Microscope

Use Stage Clips

Click Nosepiece to the lowest (shortest) setting

Look into the Eyepiece

Use the Coarse Focus

Follow steps to focus using low power

Click the nosepiece to the longest objective

Do NOT use the Coarse Focusing Knob

Use the Fine Focus Knob to bring the slide into focus
