GLAPD NEWS Annual General Meeting (AGM) : 23rd August 2014 Apologies for not honouring our promise of holding the AGM before the end of 2013-2014 financial year as announced in our previous newsletter. This was due to several reasons including the reporting period for the end of financial year for our funders and the grant application which were open with close deadlines. As announced previously, financial members will be electing a new board and all the board positions will be open to whoever amongst the members will be able and willing to stand for the positions. Therefore, we are still requesting all the members to ensure whether their membership is still valid or not. Only members with updated and valid membership will be able to vote or run for the positions. We also invite all the new members who have just joined or wish to join the organisation to also make sure their membership fees are deposited in GLAPD Int. account in due time. An email will also be sent to clarify, when is the due date for payment according to the constitution. The date of the AGM and elections of the new board will be the 23rd August 2014. The venue and time will be communicated to you soon. For any questions regarding the AGM, please feel free to contact Emmanuel Musoni at [email protected]. The current GLAPD Int. board looks forward to organising and having open, transparent and trustworthy elections of the new board for the next financial year 2014-2015.

GLAPD NEWS Past and current activities:

Great Lakes Harmony get-together party (17/05/2014). On the 17th May 2014, GLAPD Int. in partnership with the Great Lakes communities (Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and D.R Congo) held a fantastic get together party for the Great Lakes of Africa communities as well as the Australian community at the Granville Youth and Community Recreation Centre. The day was full of entertainment including music, traditional dances, kids show and fashion show. Communities had the chance to enjoy the richness of Great Lakes region cultures and the traditional food from the Great Lakes of Africa. It was also a great time for networking, meeting new friends and listening to inspirational speeches from the invited dignitaries as well as the Great Lakes community leaders. Cutting cake together was the most symbolic and prophetic action of the day. Once more we would like to appreciate all our volunteers who tirelessly made the event as successful as it was. Special ‘THANK YOU’ to all our sponsors for your financial support: the Community Relations Commission, STARTTS, ANGLICARE, Fairfield City Council, Fairfield Migrant Resource Centre, Global Family Day Care Pty, Ltd and individuals . The Rendez-vous is next year around same period. Please spare some time on your next annual calendar. “ Our neighbour is our opportunity and Unity is our strength”.

Information sessions for Banyamulenge community in Wollongong (14/06/2014).

On the 14th June 2014, few GLAPD Int. board members and staff went to Wollongong to run two information sessions in order to respond to some issues raised by the Banyamulenge community in Wollongong during a community consultation held by GLAPD Int. on the 16th February 2014. One session was about legal aid for both men and women and the second session was about women’s health. The second session was strictly for women. The legal Aid information session was conducted by Linda Tucker from Illawarra Legal Cen-

tre. Participants turned up in good numbers as expected and the objectives of this session were to raise awareness of the rights of the clients and how community people can access free legal services. Many of the participants had legal issues which dated back in the past and had not been resolved because they (community) were not informed about the legal service procedures.

The information session on women's health was conducted by Annette Health Women's Nurse (CNC). The main objectives of this session were to first raise awareness of cancers in women, family planning and pap smear test. Secondly, how women in Wollongong can ac-cess main stream services.

Both information sessions had positive outcomes because 90% of the attendees found the infor-mation sessions useful and they are looking forward to more educative sessions.
