What Changed? The Groundswell

Right now, your customers are writing about your products on blogs and recutting your commercials on YouTube. They're defining you on Wikipedia and ganging up on you in social networking sites like Facebook. These are all elements of a social phenomenon — the groundswell — that has created a permanent, long-lasting shift in the way the world works.

Most companies see it as a threat…

What Caused It?

• Erosion of trust in business• New Web and mobile technologies

make connecting with other people easier

• New super-charged word-of-mouth is the new norm

Name some social media?

• YouTube• Facebook• Twitter• Ning• Digg• Delicious• UStream

Tip 1: Just do it.

• The Groundswell has made the decision of whether or not to do social media irrelevant. Get in there.

Tip 2: Marketing mix

• If your mix includes yellow page ads, newspaper ads, flyers – think about some new ways to reach people– Look at time spent in traditional marketing

and see if some of that can go away to make room for new methods

Tip 3: Start a FB Fan page• Like a second Web site, this is a great

way to engage with your customers, offer special discounts and promote events

Tip 4: Add a blog

• There are more than 2 billion blogs in existence currently. Where’s yours?

• Blog about the things that interest you and would be interesting to your customers– Events– Stories in the news about music making

• Don’t make it about selling – engage them first

Tip 5: Measure

• Try new things and measure the outcomes so that you know what is working and what isn’t

• Use special URLs, Google Analytics and many of the free tools
