Best known for his landscape paintings of the Tasmanian wilderness, the exhibition “Lake Country” focuses on the picturesque lake district of Tasmania, Lake St Claire and Cradle Mountain.

‘This has been something I’ve wanted to do for a little while. It’s an area I haven’t explored in depth. It’s trying to tap something within myself to renew my own energy and it’s worked.’

Having drawn influence from his recent trip to France and inspiration from the raw and direct works of Courbet, Dyer delivers an exhibition of paintings fraught with extreme depth, a painterly style that is both mysterious and sublime.

Tony Bond was extremely impressed by Geoff’s majestic landscape paintings and spoke about the importance of “paint in a painting”. Dyer’s work shows his great skill in understanding and using the medium. Dyer’s use of paint portrays not just subject matter but also mood and impression. There is nothing formulaic about these works, they are fresh and inspired and a direct response to seeing and feeling the landscape.

MULTI-AWARD WINNING ARTIST | Landscape Pr izes The Wynne Pr ize and The Kings School Art Pr ize

Lake St Clare Suite II

oil on canvas 120 x 214cm $28,000

Geoff Dyer has been a finalist in The Art Gallery of New South Wales Wynne Prize (the leading National landscape award) 10 times and a finalist in The Glover Prize for Landscape 5 times. His successful year in 2012 include winning The Kings School Art Prize, which has previously been won by John Olsen and Ben Quilty. Dyers’ paintings are infused by the power and majesty of the natural world, witnessing the ancient landscape at the heart of the Tasmanian experience. Over the past decade he has covered the island, from the west coast to the rugged islands of Bass Strait and the dense timbers of the Franklin River.

In recent years his work has become increasingly abstract. Dyer’s ability to extract beauty within a seemingly barren and arid landscape bears testimony to his talent. His paintings are considered wonders of serenity and beauty, presenting a true celebration of Australia’s iconic landscape.

Predominantly a landscape painter, Dyer will only paint one portrait a year, usually for the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ prestigious Archibald Prize, Australia’s oldest and best-know visual arts award. Dyer likes to choose fellow Tasmanians as his sitters, such as his friend the author Richard Flanagan, who was the subject of his 2003 winning entry. 2011 was Dyers’ 10th time as an Archibald finalist, with a portrait of David Walsh, owner and creator of Tasmania’s MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). It was among the final selection of portraits considered for the prestigious Prize.

“The central room is dominated by what is perhaps the most successful p icture of a ll , a three-quarter length portrai t of David Walsh, the founder of the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart , by Geoffrey Dyer . ” - Christopher Allen, Nat ional Art Cr it ic ,The Austral ian 12 .04.11

“As a contemporary Australian painter, Geoff Dyer enters the landscape with an intimate knowledge of its terrains and a lifetime of immersion in expressive and haptic modes of painting. Gained through extended periods of informal study and studio work in locations such as Paris and Sydney, Dyer is possibly the most

prolific chronicler of paint of the Tasmanian and mainland Australian wilderness. He leaves his mark as one of the nations leading artists.” - Damian Smith, 2008
