GuyMaddinandKimMorganenjoythedistinctionofbeingthefirstcouple—and,indeed,marriedcouple—toserveinthegreattraditionofguestartisticdirectorsoftheTellurideFilmFestival.Andwhatapartnershiptheyrepresent.Exemplarsofhighlyindividualisticfilmconnoisseurship,theyhaveeachmadecareerstransformingtheirhighlyspecific,ofteneccentric,cinematicenthusiasmsintodeeplypersonalartandcriticism.

InfilmsincludingARCHANGEL(TFF17),CAREFUL(TFF19)andTHESADDESTMUSICINTHEWORLD(2003),Maddin(aTributeeatthe22ndFestival,withfellowSurrealistsJanSvankmajerandtheBrothersQuay)hasmystifyinglybutindeliblytransformedafetishismforesotericsilentandtransition-to-soundfilmtechniquesintoanunprecedentedcreativestyle.Healsohassingle-handedlyredefined,orperhapssimplydefined,thecityofWinnipegtotheworld.Bendingmeticulouslyrecreated,antiquatedexpressivemodestohisowndevices,thiscompletefilmmakerhasalwaysgonehisownwaywithgenial,arrestingandsometimesjustjaw-droppingresults.

AsforMorgan,justwhenonemighthavejustifiablythoughtthateverythingthatcouldbesaidaboutthatcinematiclodestarknownasfilmnoirhad,infact,beensaid,Morganarrivedtoaddressthegenreanew.WritingforherownblogSunset Gun,andinThe Huffington Post,Entertainment WeeklyandGarage Magazine,wheresheauthorsthemoviecolumn“Drive,SheSaid,”Morganhas,withparticularlyintuitive,lyricalandsometimesbesottedappreciation,givenusnewinsightsintothewondrouswomenwhopopulatedthenoirworld,boththecharactersandtheactresseswhoportrayedthem.Ifshehadn’tbefore,MorganmusthavefallenatleastpartlyinlovewithMaddinwhenshesawhisMYWINNIPEG(2007),whichfeaturedthefinalfilmappearanceofDETOURstarAnnSavage.

Bytheirownadmission,M&M’stastesoverlaptoanextraordinarydegree.ThesixfilmstheyhavechosentoshowandintroduceatTelluriderepresentaunifiedexpressionofsensibilitiesanddiscernment.FiveofthesixareHollywoodtitles,fiveareinblack-and-whiteandtheyweremadebetweentheearly1930sandthemid-1970s.Withoneexception,theyweredirectedbyjustlycelebratedauteurs,butthefilmsarenotofficialclassicsandareveryrarelyscreened.

It’sawonderfullyidiosyncraticlist,agroupingoffilmsthathavehithertoneverbeforemet.Untothemselves,theyconstituteafinemini-festival.–TM

“MyfilmisnotaboutVietnam—itisVietnam,”FrancisFordCoppolafamously(andaccurately)saidofhis1979magnumopus:aboldlyre-imaginedversionofJosephConrad’sHeart of Darknesstransposedtotheall-consumingmadnessoftheMekongDelta.Shotover14monthsunderarduousconditionsinthePhilippines,APOCALYPSENOWremainsoneoftheessentialexperiencesofmoderncinema,fromitsopeningnapalmblasts(andJimMorrisonsinging“TheEnd”)toitsfinal,unforgettableboutofritualandsacrifice.Ithasbeen35yearssincethefilm’srelease,andwhiletherehavebeencountlessfilmsaboutVietnam,thereremainsonlyoneAPOCALYPSENOW.WearethrilledtopresentthesespecialscreeningsfromanewDCPoftheoriginaltheatricalcut,madeunderFrancisFordCoppola’ssupervision.

Coppola’stoweringachievementbeganastheprojectofanothervisionaryNorthernCaliforniadirector,GeorgeLucas.LucashadcommissionedJohnMiliustowritethefirstdraftofthescreenplayandimagineddirectingitclosetohome,intheSacramento-SanJoaquindeltaregion,insmall-scale,semi-documentaryfashion.ButbythetimeAPOCALYPSEwasreadytogo,LucaswasalreadyimmersedinSTARWARSandcededtheprojecttoCoppola(hismentor),whosawinMilius’scriptanotherpossibility:thatofabig,widescreenHollywoodwarepiclikeTHEBRIDGEONTHERIVERKWAIshotthroughwithtouchesoftheabsurd,alaDR.STRANGELOVE.

Itwas,seemingly,amomentwhenCoppolahadHollywoodinthepalmofhishand,freshoffthetriumphsofthetwoGODFATHERmoviesandTHECONVERSATION.Andyet—forwhatwouldultimatelyproveveryvalidreasons—APOCALYPSENOWfrightenedthestudios.Coppolawasultimatelyforcedtoself-financethefilm,makingitperhapshistory’sbiggestandriskiestindependentproduction.

Itwasaproductionbesetbybadweather,badhealthandgenerallybadvibes(includingthearrivalofBrando,dramaticallyoverweightandgrosslyunderprepared),allexpertlychronicledbyEleanorCoppolainherbehind-the-scenesdocumentaryHEARTSOFDARKNESS:AFILMMAKER’SAPOCALYPSE,playingelsewhereintheFestival.Butperhapsatouchofjunglemadnesswasnecessarytoachievethefilm’sunique,dream-likeintensity:helicopters,underthecommandofCol.Kilgore(RobertDuvall)swoopingintothesoundsofWagner;surfingsoldiershangingtenontheMekongDelta;aPlayboybunnyrevuedescendingintoriotconditions;Kurtz(MarlonBrando)inhisdesiccatedgrandiloquence,lurkingintheshadows,philosophizingintotheendlessnight.“Thehorror,thehorror”yes,butalsothesurreal,hypnotic,psychedelicbeauty.–SF(U.S.,1979,153m)

Byhisownadmission,VolkerSchlöndorff,oneofGermany’sgreatestdirectors,spentmuchofhisyouthdreamingofbecomingFrench.HewasstillateenagerwhenhisfamilyrelocatedfromWiesbadentoParis,wherehewentontostudyphilosophyattheSorbonneandfilmmakingatthelegendaryfilmschoolIDHEC.Itwastherethathebefriendedaclassmate,LouisMalle,whohiredSchlöndorffasassistantdirectoronZAZIEDANSLEMETRO(1960),thestartofaprolificcareerasanassistantthatincludedgigsforAlainResnais(onLASTYEARATMARIENBAD)andJean-PierreMelville.

Then,withMalleashisproducer,SchlöndorffreturnedtoGermanyandmadehisdebutfeature,YOUNGTÖRLESS(1966),achilling,psychologicallyacutefilmaboutbullyingthatanticipatedbyseveraldecadesMichaelHaneke’sTHEWHITERIBBON(TFF36)andannouncedSchlöndorffasthelatestinthewaveofyoungfilmmakerscomprisingtheNewGermanCinema.AmongtheotherswereWernerHerzog,AlexanderKluge,WimWenders,andofcourseRainerWernerFassbinderwhoin1970starredforSchlöndorffinabrilliantmodernadaptationofBertoltBrecht’sBAAL,madeforGermanTVandlittleseensincethen.InTelluride,itmakesitslongoverduecomeback.

Schlöndorff’sbestfilmshavetimeandagainreturnedtothesubjectofhiscountry’sgreatandterriblejourneythroughthe20thcentury.THELOSTHONOROFKATHARINABLUM(1975),ablisteringportraitofaninnocentwomanundonebyalethalcocktailofstatepower,radicalpoliticsandtabloidsensationalism,wasmadeinpartnershipwithSchlöndorff’sthenwife,MargarethevonTrotta.COUPDEGRACE(1976,TFF5)followedamagnificentlydoomedromancesetagainsttheGermaninvolvementintheRussianCivilWar.ManyrecoiledattheprospectofafilmversionofGünterGrass’phantasmagoricalnovelaboutGermany,butTHETINDRUM(1979)isamasterpiecethatcapturesallofitshorror,mordanthumorandoddlytouchingmomentsofataleaboutaboywhorailsagainstaninhumanworldbyrefusingtogrow.

Inthedecadessince,Schlöndorffhasbeenverymuchamanoftheworld,workinginEuropeandAmerica,alwayswithimpeccabletasteinsourcematerial.FewdirectorscouldseemascomfortablehandlingMusil,Proust,ArthurMiller(theTVversionofDEATHOFASALESMAN,withDustinHoffman)andtheBritishpulpnovelistJamesHadleyChase.Forafewyearsinthe‘90s,heevenbecameastudioexecutive,helpingtorehabilitateGermany’sfamedStudioBabelsberg.Butinrecentyears,hehasreturnedtodirecting,andweareluckytohavehimback.Hislatest,DIPLOMACY,isbothoneofhisbestandmostpersonalworks—ascintillatingdramaofpoliticalmannersandmaneuverssetinNazi-occupiedParisintheshadowoftheAllies’advance.Itis,aboveall,alovelettertotheCityofLightsascouldonlyhavebeenmadebyaGermanwiththesoulofaFrenchman.–SF
