SIPPING, SNACKING ANDTOOTH DECAYNow more that ever kids are faced withan array of food choices from freshproduce to sugar-laden, processed, convenience meals and snack foods. What children eat and when they eat itmay affect not only their general health

but also their oral health. Americans are consumingfoods and drinks high in sugar and starches more oftenand in larger portions than ever before. A steady diet ofsugary foods and drinks can ruin teeth, especially amongthose who snack throughout the day.

When sugar is consumed over and over again in large, often hidden amounts, the harmful effect on teeth can bedramatic. Sugar on teeth provides food for bacteria, which produces acid. The acid can eat away the enamel

    on teeth.

To reduce your childrens risk for tooth decay: Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed

with meals. Saliva production increases duringmeals and helps to neutralize acid productionand rinse food particles from the mouth.

Limit between meal snacks, offer your childnutritious food.

If your child chews gum, make it sugarless.Chewing sugarless gum after eating canincrease saliva and help wash out food anddecay-producing acid.

Monitor Beverage consumption: Instead of softdrinks, offer your child water and low-fat milk.

Teach your child good brushing and flossinghabits.

Schedule regular dental visits.Information from the American Dental Associationhttp://www. ada.org/5578.aspx

If your child needs assistance with any dental orinsurance concerns, please contact our school nurse.Jodi Quinton [email protected]

COLD WEATHER REMINDERNow that the weather is colder, please send your child toschool with a jacket, sweatshirt, or extra layer of clothing.Whether at physical education, recess, or lunch, studentshave outdoor activities unless it is unusually cold, windy,or rainy. Please label all jackets, umbrellas, hats etc. This will enable items to be returned in case of loss.

PHONE NUMBER?Do Your Children Know Their Home PhoneNumbers?... Almost every afternoon, students comeinto the office to call home, but cant do it without our

help because they dont know a phone number tocontact a parent or care giver. Knowing a phonenumber to contact a family member is a life skill that allour students should have. It will make them feel moreindependent, and you will feel more confident that theycan reach you in an emergency. For those too young toremember multiple numbers, we suggest that you writedown important phone numbers and have your childkeep them in his/her backpack for easy access.
