Home repairs are inevitable. For the homeowner who also happens to be handy with a hammer, the occasional home repair is nothing to fear and something that many even en-joy. But there many homeowners who arent so adept at home repairs, and such men and women typically rely on trained professionals when something goes awry around the house. For those homeowners who either dont have the time or the ability to fix issues that arise around the house, the following is a breakdown of three of the more com-monly called on home service providers.

    * Electrician: An electrician specializes in addressing a buildings or homes electrical wiring issues, stationary machines and the equipment related to those machines. Electricians can fix existing issues, but many also can de-sign and install new electrical components and systems. The dangers of working with electrical systems are many, so electricians typically must be certified and licensed be-fore they can practice their trade. Such danger is one reason why even those who are adept at fixing problems around the house might want to hire an electrician should an elec-trical issue arise.

    * Plumber: A plumber is a professional whose area of ex-pertise is in installing and maintaining systems for drinking water, drainage and sewage. Though not all jurisdictions require a plumber be licensed before he or she can practice, many do, and it can take years of training and experience to master the skill of plumbing. Many people call a plumber when a toilet or sink backs up, but plumbers must have far more extensive skills as well. Plumbers must be skilled in a number of areas, including having an ability to read and understand a homes blueprints, detect faults in a plumbing system if the homeowner cannot install and repair fixtures and systems, and be aware of any legal requirements to en-sure a home is safe.

    * Landscaper: Homeowners have increasingly looked to professional landscapers to maintain their homes exterior and subsequently ensure their property value remains high. A typical landscaper offers his client an array of services, from cutting the grass to raking leaves to more compli-cated tasks that gravitate toward landscape architecture. A homes curb appeal has been shown to vastly improve a prospective buyers impression of the house, and as a result many homeowners rely on a landscaper to take care of their property. Many landscapers an extensive knowledge of the science involved in tending to a lawn and how to help it weather the seasons without losing its appeal.

These professionals can help maintain your home

Did you know?Wood stoves have been used to heat up a residence for cen-turies, but newer models are more efficient and are actually one of the greenest options for radiant heat in a home. Todays stoves produce more heat with less wood, adhering to emis-sions regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency. Wood also is a renewable resource that puts fewer pollutants into the air when burned than coal, oil and gas.

Many times it is to a homeowners advantage to open the drapes and let sunlight shine in. Still, for shift workers, parents of young children who need to nap or just those who have south- or west-facing windows that make rooms overly warm, darkening the room is necessary at certain times of the day. The easiest and most effective way to do so is to purchase blackout curtains. Depending on the brand and quality of the curtains, some of them may block out sunlight entirely while providing additional benefits. While preventing sunlight from entering a room, blackout curtains, which are thicker than traditional curtains, may also be effective at insulating rooms against drafty win-dows and providing noise reduction.

(StatePoint) Your house is a refuge from the outside world, and in the cooler months, theres nothing more comforting than coming in from the brisk air to an inviting home.

How do you ensure your home is warm and snuggly for your family this winter?

Here are some toasty tips for a cozy season from the experts at Sun Products, the makers of Snuggle fabric softener:

    Keep Out the Cold

When you get home each day, take off those street shoes and put on some fuzzy slippers. Your toes will thank you.

Dont neglect your fireplace this season. Snuggle up by the fire with a great book or a loved one. For safetys sake, be sure your fireplace is well-maintained. Never leave a fire unattended.

Remember to seal up cracks around window frames and doorways by applying weather-stripping. Its easy to do and will make a world of difference.

    Soften Up

A long winter can be a bit bleak. Get happy by snuggling with loved ones. A recent Ipsos survey found that 94 percent of Americans feel happier by doing so. So make your couch the perfect cuddle den with big throw pillows and soft blankets.

You can create comfier rooms all around the house by giving your fabrics a touch of softness. Treat sheets, linens, blankets and other laundry with a liquid fabric softener like Snuggle Blue Sparkle, for example, which provides fabrics with a long-lasting freshness. And dont forget the dryer sheets to reduce static cling, which is rampant in wintertime.

Tips for Making Your Home Cozier this Winter

95th Anniversary of Lithuanian IndependenceSCHENECTADY St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church, located at 600 State Street (corner of State and Lafayette Streets), Schenectady, is hosting the Knights of Lithuania Hudson Mo-hawk Council #136, as they commemorate the 95th Anniversary of Lithuanian Independence and the 15th anniversary of the death of their former chaplain and former Pastor of St. Josephs Church, Rev. Bernard Gustas, at the 10:30am mass at St. Josephs Church on Sunday, February 17. Special dignitaries will be in attendance to present a proclamation commemorating Lithu-anian Independence. Following the Mass, everyone will be invited downstairs in the Church hall for assorted ethnic foods, desserts, coffee and tea. The former Holy Cross Church, which was located in the Stockade area, was founded by Lithuanian immigrants to America in 1922. Lithu-anian Independence Day is observed out of respect to the founders of their former parish and for their brothers and sisters in Lithuania, living or deceased. The public is cordially invited. St. Josephs Church is handicapped accessible and parking is available in the parking lot behind the Church. More information is available by calling 374-4466 x13. (P)
