TOS Newsletter September 2019 Orchid Colleagues, Our Society’s year got off to a roaring start thanks to our favorite member Peter Breed’s fantastic talk on Vandas, Neofinetias and their hybrids. It is a treat to be able to purchase what we see on the screen from our speaker’s sales table. Peter and Joe Elder always offer great plants for ‘adoption’. Neo’s and the Vanda hybrids are really neat, forgiving orchids and I encourage even our inexperienced members to try one or two the next time you see them on a sales table. Now that we survived Dorian’s wrath and wish away any following tropical events we start having weather that allow us to dream of the cooler days and crisper nights that the Autumn promises us. One of the reasons orchid societies have Fall auctions is to allow their members to thin out their outdoor collections when it is time to tuck them into their indoor (sun rooms, greenhouses and window sills) spaces. For TOS membership these auctions have allowed us to share some truly great plants while providing the society much needed funds. So bring your clean plants to the October 6th auction that you want our great auctioneers to find new homes for. By the time you read this Patsy and her band of merry orchid nuts have had another successful field trip to the C’ville area greenhouses (Jeff Morris and Floradise). Her new member classroom program will resume in November so stay tuned for this great educational resource to resume. Orchid Colleagues,

Our Society’s year got off to a roaring start thanks to our favorite member Peter Breed’s fantastic talk on Vandas, Neofinetias and their hybrids. Some of Jamie’s ‘storm survivors”

Our more seasoned members all knew and enjoyed the friendship Dr. Arthur Kaplan and his wonderful wife Phylis shared with all of us. Before his untimely passing he moved his orchid collection to the conservatory he built on the ODU campus. Those of us who maintain greenhouses know intimately how much time and money goes into keeping these facilities functional. The Kaplan Conservatory is no exception as Darrin Duling is fully aware of as he plans to make necessary capital improvements to his facility. To increase the conservatory’s community presence and ultimately encourage support of this great orchid resource the Kaplan Conservatory is

hosting an open house on October 15th at 5 PM. All of our members are welcome and encouraged to attend as a guest of the conservatory. More information will follow so stay tuned for future announcements. So, as we enjoy the cooling weather and are able care for your lovely orchids more comfortably take count of what you want to share with your fellow orchid enthusiasts while making room for new additions. See you all at our October 6th auction.

TIDEWATER ORCHID SOCIETY

Minutes Membership Meeting

April 7, 2019

The August 25, 2019 meeting was brought to order by Jamie Krochmal about 2 p.m. at the Rotunda Building in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Jamie welcomed the two new trustees, Dori Iwanowski and John Grocholl. We have received $10,000 from the Dallas Foundation in Ms. Dallas memory. The board will decide at a later date on some ways to best use the new funds.

The minutes from the last meeting were accepted as printed in the newsletter.

Ellen Hansen gave the treasurers report and copies were passed out. She has paid the AOS membership fees for 2 years and $1000.00 went to the Kaplan Conservatory.

Alice Snyder gave the report for the upcoming meetings. October is our donated plant auction where any members can bring plants to auction off. November’s speaker is Erick Sawyer from River Valley Orchids speaking on maxilarias. December is our awards banquet. Today Peter Breed will be speaking about vandas and neos.

Patsy Temple welcomed two guests, Carolyn Tripp and her father, to the meeting. She also welcomed new members Julie Virok, Wendy Hale and Stephanie McSweeney.

On September 14 there will be a trip to Jeff Morris’s greenhouse in Charlottesville continuing to Gordansville and the Floradise Greenhouse. This will be an all day trip leaving at 7 and returning about 7 that evening. October 12 is the next beginner class. That is the Saturday after the auction meeting.

Pat Coderre had spoken to Chris Barko from the gardens about using biodegradables for the meetings. He said we can put all plates and utensils in their trash. Cans will be kept for recycling and the members are asked to take home any plates brought with food.

Barbara MacKechnie will be sending out e-mails to let members know when the newsletter will be available on the website. The newsletter will not be sent by e-mail to members.

Dori Iwanowski has been looking into advertising our meetings on some free sites. It will be announced where later.

Sunshine reported that Bert Bennett has had shoulder surgery, Joanne Bryan is doing well after having a cancer removed, and Roseann Wade has had knee surgery.

Louise Roesser, our AOS representative, announced that AOS dues will be going up January 1 for everyone. They offered a renewal of two years at the present price which time has since run out on.

John Grocholl explained the show table for the new members. Plants are brought to the meeting by members and judged by other members. The top three picked are then awarded points toward certificates given in each category at the December Awards Banquet. The show table is also a way for members to ask questions on plants they may be interested in having.

John Zukosky is often asked what his favorite orchid is. Without hesitation, he answers Periseria elata. They have no idea what he is talking about, but here it is in the pictures. AKA, Holy Ghost Orchid, or Espirtu Santo. Its name comes from the dove inside the flowers. The dove’s tail feathers move down when the bee pollinator arrives to allow it to enter. The flowers are 2 inches wide and will eventually open flat. It is the national flower of Panama. Its flower stem grows over 5 feet tall and has 30 fragrant flowers that open several at a time. It grows in the mountains at the edge of the forest, on the ground, and always blooms in September. It is an endangered species, but not too hard to grow. He has managed to keep one alive for forty years under various growing conditions.
