The Spirit of the Holidays
Speaking of upcoming performances—I am excited
about the variety of the pieces we will be
performing this season. I always find it both fun and
challenging to create a performance that showcases
our artistry while also providing some novelty. I
think we accomplished this again by mixing in some
fun and quirky pop/rock songs with more
traditional Christmas carols. We also incorporate
other instruments for some variety. This year, in
addition to percussion and keyboard, we will
include harp, singing, and a gong. You’re going to
love it! Come experience the Spirit of the Holidays
in a truly unique way.
As I write this, we have just finished with Halloween
and are now looking forward to the upcoming
holidays. Before the ubiquitous Christmas carols start
bombarding us, we will celebrate Thanksgiving. If you
are reading this, you have probably attended one or
more of our performances, purchased a CD,
supported us by becoming a Friend, and/or
contributed to one of our fundraising efforts. So, in
the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to tell you how
grateful I am for you and for your continued support
of Concert Bells of Fort Worth. While we enjoy our
time rehearsing together, learning new music, and
reviving familiar pieces, without you, we would be
incomplete. I hope that you will make it to one of our
upcoming holiday performances and see what we
have been preparing.
Stephanie Rhoades, Conductor & Artistic Director
Getting into the Spirit of the Holidays
For the Thompson family, getting into the spirit of
the holidays always has always involved two
activities: decorating our home and worshiping at
church.
The Friday after Thanksgiving is not a shopping day
for us—it’s decoration day! When Alice and Helen
were growing up (which doesn’t feel that long
ago), we would spend the morning visiting nearby
Christmas tree lots. The kids and Rick would run
around playing hide-n-seek while I inspected each
7-8’ tree for uniformity and shape. After we
purchased the perfect tree, we spent the rest of
Karen Thompson, President
the day decorating the house while drinking cider
and listening to Christmas music.
The Sundays before Christmas were spent in church
observing Advent. I was a church musician, so
each Sunday was packed with wonderful music that,
after months of rehearsals, we could finally present
with love and passion to the congregation. I was so
fortunate that my girls were in my handbell choirs
and vocal choirs.
It doesn’t feel quite the same now that the girls are
grown. But the traditions still remain, and are now
filled with wonderful memories of their childhood.

Christmas is a season of giving—something we often use synonymously with “gifting.” And with
Concert Bells, it is a true gift to be able to share our music with the greater DFW metroplex. The
Friends of Concert Bells of Fort Worth are always so generous to gift us their time, attention, and
fiscal donations throughout the year. Not only does it continuously help us operate as a non-
profit, but also it fuels our passion and energy to be the best musicians we can be for you. The
annual North Texas Giving Day event, held every September, is dubbed a “giving extravaganza”: a
challenge in the North Texas area to raise money and awareness for local non-profit
organizations. In past years, this has been a capital campaign for us, as we expanded our equipment
with low bass chimes and bells (we affectionately called them our “buckets”).
It seemed fitting to theme this year’s event to join our “Bucket Brigade” by “Filling the Bucket”! Friends of
Concert Bells of Fort Worth, old and new, “rang” in with an AMAZING total of $3,795! We are truly honored by
your generous gifts—and it is our hope that we honor you in return with our performances. Remember, your
donations to our organization are tax-deductible, and get you advance notice of our concert schedule, plus a
newsletter with information advising you what we’ve been up to each season! These donations help us maintain
our equipment, purchase music, and SO much more! Whenever you give, however you give to CBFW—in the
“Spirit of the Holidays,” we thank our Friends and audience members for your presence, time, and donations, and
wish you the most joyous of Christmas seasons!

Christmas, the Season of Giving
Concert Bells of Fort Worth is excited to have Josh ringing with us this
holiday season. Not only is he an accomplished ringer; he will be featured as
harpist and will add percussion to several pieces as well.
Josh is originally from Colorado, but moved to the Dallas area to become a
Flight Attendant for a major airline. He also owns and operates a small
business. Previously, he worked full time in church music ministry, leading a
program of eight handbell ensembles plus additional theatrical, instrumental,
puppet, and vocal groups. He’s been a member of nine different community
ensembles in five different states, and has traveled domestically and
internationally to play and conduct handbells. Additionally, he subs for Cast of
Bronze and Concert Bells, and also serves the Handbell Musicians of America
Area 9 Board as Secretary. For fun, he enjoys attending live auctions and
playing the harp.

My challenge each year is to avoid all things Christmas until the
Friday following Thanksgiving. If I let the season start too soon,
I get burned out before Christmas actually arrives. But... as
soon as the Thanksgiving dishes are washed, it’s the cue for the
festivities to begin. The first Christmas decor to appear is our
Christmas Village. My husband, Dale, and his engineer friend
constructed this massive set with so many intricate pieces, I’m
always finding something new to see. It’s so big I actually have
to use a step stool to see all of it! Once the
village has appeared, I know it’s time to
embrace all of the joys of the season.
Valerie Martin, Secretary

Welcome to CBFW
Kerry Knox has been a musician since 6th grade, when he started
playing the clarinet. His drive allowed him to sit first chair, Texas All
State, three years in a row during high school, and from there he
became first chair in the Aggie Band as a freshman. After college,
Kerry played in the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra until his career
took the lead in his life. He began ringing bells 18 years ago while in
Lake Charles, LA. Kerry has always liked ringing the big bass bells, but
has rung in almost all positions. Professionally, he is the owner and
president of Secure Testing, Inc., and is also an IT Network
Consultant. Kerry sings in the Arlington Master Chorale (Bass 2) and
plays bells at St. Barnabas United Methodist Church and Trinity
United Methodist Church, both in Arlington.
Kerry Knox
Martha Smith has been ringing handbells since the age of twelve, when she happened to be in the
right place at the right time, because her mom’s choir at First Presbyterian in Plano needed some
help. With a few breaks along the way, she has been ready to ring ever since. She was very active in
Handbell Musicians of America Area 6 (Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee) when
she lived in Mississippi, and served on the board there before moving back to the promised land and
joining Concert Bells of Fort Worth. She currently serves on the Greater Dallas Handbell Association
Board. When she is not ringing or thinking about ringing, she enjoys reading and trying to keep up
with her three sons and three dogs.
CBFW is happy to have Kerry & Martha ringing with us this year.
We hope you can come to a concert this season to meet them face to face.
Martha Smith
