    Montage

    MontageMontage

Description: This is a montage project utilizing the masking element ofPhotoshop.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I got the images

from a google search and used the American Flag image as my back layer.I used a mask to bring out the flag and used a quote down at the bottom

I found online attributed to Jefferson. This is the Jefferson Memorial inWashington DC.

Message: Freedom comes from dreams and not from being held down by the

things of our past. It is meant to be inspirational to anyone looking for comfort.Audience: Anyone who loves America, mostly people familiar with tragedy.

Top Thing Learned: I really enjoyed learning about the masking element inPhotoshop.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I used no filters or

    colorization.

Color scheme and color names: Red White Blue.

Title Font Name & Category: Snell Roundhand Black/ Script.

This is one of my favorite projects, even though most of the timethese turn out pretty cheesy. I enjoyed learning about how to

mask images in Photoshop and seeing the results from doing so.

Description: We were instructed to find a print image (magazine, book, etc.)and scan it into the computer. I chose to advertise a fictitious air show in the

town I live in, a rural town just outside of Rexburg, Idaho.

Process: I spent a few minutes going through magazines until finding this onein an LDS Living Magazine. I cut out the image and placed it on the scanner, using wax paper to help fade out the back side of the image, which was an

article that was visible through the paper. It took me a while (20 minutes)to finally scan it so I could not see the text on the other side. I cropped

the image before scanning and increased the PPI so I could re-size the

picture later. I then selected a title and created body copy, using the colorsfrom the boys shirt to give my text a connection to the image. After someconstructive critiques, I moved the copy to the center of the image to increase

the flow and aligned the title with the copy on the left side. I saturated mybackground image to help the colors pop more, and narrowed my margins to

make sure I had a full bleed.

Message: The message is to come and have fun with your family at a local airshow. It supports local veterans, encouraging a sense of national and local

    patriotism.

Audience: Local community members and those interested in planes ormilitary service.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic with blue as the ma in color to

    help everything flow evenly.

Top Thing Learned: I learned a lot about resolution and sampling or non-sampling pictures to get the desired effect.

    Brochure

    BrochureBrochure

Description: This project is advertising a fictional college based club for

photographers. It is meant to inform.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used Illustrator to create the logo on theback and then used InDesign for the rest of the project. After doing (and

redoing) quite a bit of math, I figured how I could take my sketch and createa viable brochure for it. I knew I wanted to use the cut out camera view piece

to provide some interaction. I selected photos from unsplash.com, except for

the front photo which I took myself. I spent a lot of time looking for a goodbackground and found one on cgtextures.com, which is a great resource. Ispent a lot of time making sure everything was aligned and did my best to give

all the information enough space to not be crowded by the pictures.

Message: The message is that photography is intuitive and most people justneed to learn basic principles, which this club offers.

Audience: Those interested in photography on any level.

Top Thing Learned: I learned a lot about printing copies often to see what it

    looks like in real life.

    Web Design

    Web DesignWeb Design

Description: This is a project for COMM 130: Visual Media. I were given basicknowledge of HTML and CSS programs and asked to create a webpage

featuring my logo from Project 5. I was also given a skeleton of an HTML andCSS program to get me started, but I had to fill in a lot of blanks. I used an

online program to select my color scheme and worked a lot in CSS to maneuvermy text and pictures around.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used mostly CSS to style my page and

learned a lot about code and how specific you have to be in order to make itwork well. I used design skills as well as coding skills to format my pictures,

    which thankfully already existed.

Message: The message of this page is meant to expound on my creation of theImprov Idaho logo and also showcase my ability to create basic websites.

Audience: This is meant to help future employers understand my skill set.

Top Thing Learned: The greatest challenge I encountered while doing thisproject, and thus the biggest thing I learned, was how to format two different

images. I learned that in the HTML I had to specify the class the image wasunder (right and bottom) and then in the CSS specify which I wanted to work

with in the indicator section (.right or .bottom). This was a really cool thing tolearn and I know it will be very useful down the road.

Title Font Families & Category: It i s coded to have Memphis as t he primary font,

with Gadget as the secondary and serif as the default.

Copy Font Families & Category: It is coded to have “Trebuchet MS Bold” as theprimary, Georgia as the secondary and sans-serif as the default.

Changes made to the CSS: I changed many thing in the CSS. I added images

and changed the H1 category. I italicized the H4 and changed lots of paddingand margins as well. I also altered the colors and font categories. I also added

    a backgorund image.

    StationeryStationery

Description: T his is a stationery project for COMM130.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): For this project, I used InDesign. First I

created my logo and used tracking to place my full name under my initials. Then I made the radio waves and gave them a gradient going out from thelogo. I then transferred the background color and logo to the letterhead and

added info to the business card. Then I made the watermark transparentand the logo on the back of the business card transparent as well.

Message: In this project I am trying to get the message across that I am

a communicator and have reach when it comes to impact. I am t ry ing tomarket myself to future employers.

Audience: Future employers and t hose I interact with professionally.

Top Thing Learned: Font work is really important. It sends a message to your

    audience about who you are.

    Flier

    FlierFlier

Description: This is my first project in the visual media sector of Communica-tions. It is a flier advertising an upcoming leadership event intended for grad-

    uating seniors.

Process: Using InDesign, I f irst dec ided I wanted to present a more profes-sional or modern tone to the flier, to give t he audience a good idea of what to

expect from the event. I manually searched how to use things like leading andkerning to make my title. At first I had two pictures, but came to understand

it was taking from the audiences ability to focus on the important things. Iused alignment to the best of my ability while not trying to make it look like

a downloaded template. I also tried hard to use my white space to my advan-tage, helping the date, time and place stick out for the reader to see.

Message: In my flier I was trying to communicate the message of opportunity

to the graduating seniors to network and learn "essential leadership skills."Through the design I attempted to give a modern and businesslike feel, which

would connect with those looking to reflect such an attitude and hopefullydetract those less serious about business opportunities.

Audience: This flier attempts to reach an audience of those trying to break

into larger roles within a company or network by showing leadership skillsand ambition. I am mostly trying to connect with students interested in busi-

    ness.

Top Thing Learned: I think the thing I learned that will stick with me is how touse leading and kerning to my advantage. I don't want to overuse it but I alsoreally see the value of it in this instance and am happy I learned on my own

    how to do it.

    Logo

    LogoLogo

Description: This is a logo for an Improv Comedy group based out of

    Rexburg Idaho.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): Using Adobe Illustrator, I created the

microphone from a variety of rectangles and circles and used the pathfunction to create different shapes. Then I added in the text, trying to

give it a formal and professional feel to help set the group apart fromamateur groups in the area. Then I used the pen tool to make the cord to

the microphone, having it underline the words. I then took it and put in a

grayscale and also made it white on the black background, which I thoughtturned out pretty cool.

Message: The message in this logo is to encourage people to come out tohave a good time watching an Improv performance.

Audience: The audience for this logo would be those interested in these

types of performances with some background knowledge of what Improv is.

Top Thing Learned: I really liked learning about the pen tool and using thepath tool to adjust pre-made shapes.

Color Scheme and Color Names: Basic color scheme using black and white.

Title/Body Font Names & Categories: Title: Myanmar MN Sans Serif.

    Photo Design

    Photo DesignPhoto Design

Photography is new realm for me. I have taken pictures with my smartphone

and do so often, but doing editing and looking for design principles in myphotography is a new concept for me.

I spent some time walking around campus thinking about the assignment and

looking for principles. I tried to get shots from a few angles of everything sothat I could pick the best one. It took me a while to figure out how to do “spot

metering” on the camera I rented for the assignment, and eventually I figured

out my phone did it very easily so I used it for the two focus shots. I tried toapply other design principles, such as white space and the rule of odds, inmy picture taking. Overall I learned a lot about color and editing from this

assignment and really enjoyed taking the pictures.

I also really found the editing process to be very interesting. We used simpleedits in every picture such as balancing levels and sharpening effects. Later in

this portfolio, I used oen of the picutres for another project.
