I didn’t want to make a mistake. I would be ashamed.” All this work was followed by a full year doing the initial pencil sketch before any paint was applied to the huge and intimidating blank canvas. The word “sketch,” though, is a grossly inadequate way to describe the magnificent image, drawn with mathematical precision, in which all lines converge at one point: archi- tecture meets painting head-on. The viewer is simply immersed in the spectacle, as though standing before the sultan himself in the flesh. “It is perfect perspective,” said Mirizio, an admitted “fanatic” for accuracy who works seven to eight hours a day on the painting. After A Thousand and One Nights II is finished, Mirizio is uncertain exactly where it will be displayed since the painting is not a commission, but simply a labour of love. “It will be left for a museum somewhere,” he said.
