“I want it as exact as possible,” hesaid. “There will be no errors at all. Ididn’t want to make a mistake. Iwould be ashamed.”
All this work was followed by afull year doing the initial pencilsketch before any paint was appliedto the huge and intimidating blankcanvas.
The word “sketch,” though, is agrossly inadequate way to describethe magnificent image, drawn withmathematical precision, in which alllines converge at one point: archi-tecture meets painting head-on. Theviewer is simply immersed in thespectacle, as though standing beforethe sultan himself in the flesh.
“It is perfect perspective,” saidMirizio, an admitted “fanatic” foraccuracy who works seven to eighthours a day on the painting.
After A Thousand and OneNights II is finished, Mirizio isuncertain exactly where it will bedisplayed since the painting is not acommission, but simply a labour oflove.
“It will be left for a museumsomewhere,” he said.
