The children all appeared well prepared and confidently worked through the Maths and English papers. Thank you to the Year 6 team for organising the week. Assembly Theme - Holy Week Mrs Coughtrey led our assembly on Monday and started by probing the children about what they knew in addition to using props to remind them of the significant events that happened during the week before Easter Sunday. The Year 4s were very proactive as they have been learning about Holy Week as part of their RE topic this term. The children enjoyed having the different elements of the week jumbled up so they could say on which day they happened. On Wednesday, Imogen Garrett and Max Pounder, the LionsHouse Captains, led our assembly. They continued on from Mrs Coughtreys assembly by acting out (with the help of some of their friends) the Easter story. They also challenged children to remember that Easter is not just about eggs! Imogen and Max had given up several lunchtimes planning their assembly and also delivered with great confidence too. Well done to Imogen and Max and their Year 6 assistants! This is a very exciting opportunity for Mrs Coughtrey and, having worked at Buttsbury for over 12 years, starting as a newly qualified teacher and rising through the ranks to the position of Acting Deputy Headteacher, she is looking forward to broadening her experience in a different school. We wish her the very best of luck in her new position. Midday Assistant Vacancy We are still looking to recruit a Midday Assistant to join our lunchtime team on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Basketball News Well done to the Year 4 team who kicked off the

week in great style with a 30-10 victory against Long Ridings. The team showed great skill in their play.

Continuing in a similar manner, our Year 3 team played St. Thomas’ on Tuesday and won 16-8. Mrs Mara was very impressed by how well the team

played and also by their super teamwork! On Wednesday, both our Year 5 and Year 6 teams

were in action. Year 6 played an exciting match against Holly Trees and won 3-2. Year 5 faced a

tough team from St. Peter’s (South Weald). They put up a really good fight but sadly lost 4-1.

On Thursday, our two girls’ teams were in action. Our B team faced a tough Year 6 A team from St.

Thomas’. The girls fought really hard and although they were several baskets down, they didn’t give up and kept trying their very best from the start to finish. Our A team also faced a challenging team

from St. Peter’s (South Weald). In fact, the game was so close, it went to the very last basket!

Thankfully it was in our favour and we won 20-17. Well done to all our amazing players - we had 55

children representing the school this week which is phenomenal! Thank you to all our loyal supporters for your great encouragement. Thank you very much to

Miss Taylor. Mrs Mara, Mrs Sherwood, Ms Marshall, Miss Donnelly and Miss Unite for giving up part of

their evening to accompany the teams.

This week’s attendance figure is: 97.6%! (Ooooh - so close!) This year’s attendance target is 97.7%.

A special ‘Well Done’ to Classes 6F and 3Ma who both had 100% attendance this week! Congratulations!

Life Expo Event Classes 6A, 6F, 5C and 5M visited the Billericay Baptist Church to

participate in the Life Expo workshop on Tuesday. The children learnt about who Jesus was, how he helped people and taught them and even how he cured the blind and deaf. They also learnt about

other miracles that he performed. The workshop helped the children to understand, in detail, the Easter story - how and why Jesus died on

the cross and all about his rising from the dead. An extremely informative and interactive visit, with lots of audio-visual aids to add

to the enjoyment of the visit.

Maths Masterclass Last week Archie Walker and Mihaela Karapeneva from

Year 6 represented our school in the Maths Masterclass at Billericay School. The competition was extremely tough as

they were competing against some of the most able mathematicians in Billericay. This did not intimidate the super duo as they came first in the competition - a super

achievement! Well done to Archie and Mihaela!

Girls’ Netball B/C Tournament Wednesday 21st March 2018

On Wednesday morning our Year 6 girls took part in a cold but sunny B/C Netball Tournament held at Billericay High School. Two teams entered the

competition and all the girls played some excellent netball. We saw some brilliant attacking, defending

and teamwork. Both teams played against local schools such as Quilters, Brightside and Downham.

We are very pleased to announce that Burgundy Buttsbury finished in 3rd place and Blue Buttsbury

finished in 7th place. Well done to everyone who took part. A big thank you to Mrs Harris and Mrs

Constable for attending the event and supporting our girls with transport, to Mrs Coughlan for her help

with coaching and transport and to Miss Taylor, our netball manager/coach.

Windmill Hill Merits Well done to the following children who were awarded special ‘Windmill Hill’

merits yesterday for their super effort and commitment during the recent visit to Windmill Hill:

Kesia Crees, Jack Sawyer, Gene Sullivan, Phoebe Thompson, Erin Blake, Katie Hood, Ruby Toll, Ethan Lee, Eadie Hatchard and Yahia Asfour.

Cookery Lesson On Wednesday afternoon, 6U were treated to a delicious surprise - a cooking session! They were joined by Jo Head, the school chef, who

led them in a discussion about healthy food choices, focusing on breakfast. Then came the bit the children were most looking forward to - making the fruity yoghurt pots! Some of the children found it a

little tricky to resist eating the ingredients, but eventually all the children had everything they needed and set about making their fruity

creations. A lot of fun was had by all!!

Afternoon Tea Yesterday saw the last Afternoon Tea of the Spring Term, with another 16 excited children arriving, clutching their favourite piece of work so far this

year! Whilst the children clearly enjoy the lovely refreshments provided, it’s always a treat for me to listen to the children talk with pride about their

work and also to hear the excellent questions that the other children pose.

Joint School Council Meeting – Wednesday 21st March 2018

On Wednesday morning our School Council representatives hosted a joint meeting with the

representatives from Buttsbury Infants. The Core 5 confidently led the meeting which focused on

creating a list of ‘20 things to do before leaving Primary School’. The Core 5 and our School Council

were extremely mature and an asset to our school! A big thank you to Mrs Andrews, Mrs Walker, Miss

Liston and Ms Ross for helping supervise the children and to Miss Pretty for organising the event.

Year 4 Assembly After an action-packed week at Windmill Hill, Year 4 were hard at

work this week rehearsing their assembly for parents. On Thursday, the parents were invited in to share in some of the

children's best experiences from the trip. The parents were treated to the children's acrostic poems about the activities, drama sketches to relive their best parts and numerous

memories from their trip. They also met Jeff - the newest member of Year 4 - the Year 4 robot built by the children who did not come

to Windmill Hill. Well done to all the children in Year 4 for entertaining their parents

so confidently and in such a fun manner!

Page 4: Friday 23rd March 2018

Year 3 Fire Safety Talks Yesterday Year 3 had a visit from Rachel who is a member

of the Essex County Fire Safety and Rescue Team. She delivered a Fire Safety Programme to help develop the

children’s fire safety awareness skills. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and were able to learn about

potential hazards that could cause a fire and what to do in the event of a fire. There was also an emphasis on the

children taking greater responsibility for their own safety so you may have already been reminded by your child to check your fire alarms weekly and to have a fire evacuation plan in

place!

Lunchtime Assistants Mr Nation would like to thank Isabella Howlett and Roxy Hartman (both in 3Ma) for their help every day this week with the setting up of his lunchtime ‘Fundamental Fitness

Club’ with the emphasis on fun!

CVL Report - Boys’ Teams Thursday saw Buttsbury’s football teams in action again;

when two teams of Year 5 Boys played their second 7-a-side Central Venue League tournament at Mayflower High School. The boys had to play six other schools from Billericay as well

as each other, in the second of three CVL tournaments. The Buttsbury A Team won all three of their matches to top Group 2, while the Buttsbury B Team played well - winning one and losing two matches (one against Buttsbury A), to

finish third in Group 2. In the play-offs, Buttsbury A finished in joint first place after drawing the final while Buttsbury B finished in sixth place

overall. The third and final tournament of the season will take place after Easter.

Congratulations to all who represented Buttsbury so well. A big thank you to Mrs Johnston, Mrs Scales, Mrs McCrow and

Mr Betts who accompanied the teams and to Ms Marshall,

our team manager/coach.

CVL Girls’ Football Tournament On Thursday afternoon our Year 5/6 girls took part in

an extremely competitive CVL Football Tournament, which was held at Mayflower High School. Throughout

the tournament, both A and B teams put on an outstanding display of defending and attacking. The

girls did extremely well with the B team finishing in 8th and the A team finishing in 2nd, narrowly missing out on first place to Quilters! A big thank you to Mrs Steven and Ms Harnett for helping to supervise the children.

Also a huge thank you to Mr Smith for all his effort and time that he has given to the girls, not only through

attending the event but also supporting Miss Pretty and the girls at training every week. Thank you also to Miss

Pretty, our team manager/coach. We would also like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the Friends’ Association for purchasing our new pink football kit as seen in the photo directly below.

Sport Relief Day – Monday 19th March 2018 On Monday, Buttsbury Junior School supported this year’s National Sport

Relief Campaign by coming into school dressed as a famous sports person, as a Greek Olympian or wearing their chosen sports clothes. These ideas were suggested by the children themselves and the teachers even joined in too!

During the week, the children also took part in running the Sport Relief mile around the playground. In total we have managed to raise an outstanding £626.40 for Sport Relief! Well done Buttsbury and thank you for your

continued support!
