With focus on the current down-turn in the agricultural economy, Nebraska Extension Red Willow County will host a West Central Cattlemen’s educational meeting January 24thCulbertson, NE, Hitchcock County Fairgrounds, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. CT. The program is designed to help cattle pro- ducers minimize input costs, generate additional income and utilize risk management strategies through knowledge of their financial resources. Topics and presenters for the program will be “Livestock Fly and Lice Control” Dave Boxler, NE Extension Educator; “Methods to Increase Productivity of Spring Born Calving Production Systems in Nebraska” Randy Saner, NE Extension Educator; “Stars, Cash Cows and Dogs,” Robert Tigner, NE Extension. Register with the Red Willow County Ex- tension office, 308-345-3390 by January 22, 2018 for a meal count. Cost of the program is $12 for pre-registration or $15 at the door. McCook National Bank is also sponsoring the meeting. BILL HAS BEEN FILED A bill has been filed to ban so-called bump stocks in Nebraska, the device used in the deadly Las Vegas shooting. Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln says a 60-year member of the NRA contacted her office last year to say bump stocks should be banned and her staff drafted a bill, but it took a back seat to other priorities. “And, then, Las Vegas happened, and we had this bill and I was mad at myself for not having brought it; to bring it up and have the discussion about it,” Pan- sing Brooks tells Nebraska Radio Network. Legislative Bill 780 would ban bump stocks and gun silencers. The Las Vegas shooter used a bump stock to turn a semi-automatic rifle into a near-automatic gun, leading to a much greater loss of life. Fifty-eight people died and 527 suffered injuries October 1st as the shooter opened fire on an outdoor music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel before turning a gun on himself. The bill makes the manufacturing, sale, pur- chase, or possession of bump stocks and silencers a felony with the pos- sibility of a two-year prison sentence. “FRIDAY SAFETY MESSAGE” “DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING, DRIVE LIKE WE ARE.” The Ne- braska Department of Transportation (NDOT) wants to display your wit and wisdom in “Friday Safety Messages” via electronic message boards along Nebraska’s Interstate and other major highways. These messages will be posted on Fridays and the more creative, the better. Perhaps you’ve caught a glimpse of some of these messages over the past couple of years, including “JOIN THE REBELLION AGAINST DIS- TRACTED DRIVING,” in reference to the release of the latest Star Wars movie, or a Thanksgiving-time reminder to “BE A GOOD POTATO, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD.” Many of these short safety snippets have tied in with holidays or special events, such as the Olympics, cur- rent events, back-to-school or sports. After a successful launch last year, the NDOT, in partnership with the Nebraska State Patrol, wants to con- tinue that effort, reaching out to the public for witty, creative messages to display on Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) across the state. A new safety message is posted every Friday, for 24 hours from 12:00 a.m. Friday to 12:00 a.m. Saturday, on overhead DMS along I-80 and I-29, reminding motorists to consider all aspects of driving and safety. ON THIS DAY

1959 Buddy Holly re-leases his last record "It Doesn't Matter"; he was killed in a plane crash 29 days later.

SPORTS Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook confirmed on Thursday that redshirt freshman setter Hunter Atherton has asked for a schol-arship release and will pursue a transfer. Atherton, a native of Prospect, Ohio, played in 20 matches during the Huskers’ 2017 NCAA Championship season. She set the first two matches of her career at the season-opening VERT Challenge, logging a career-high 47 assists against Oregon. Atherton finished the season with 137 assists, 13 service aces and 46 digs. “I want to thank Hunter for her contribu-tions to our team this season, which included setting two very tough matches in her first-career college action to start the season for us, and also playing a key role as a serving sub throughout the season, especially during big moments of the final four,” Cook said. “I wish her all the best as she moves forward in her career.” The Nebraska women’s basketball team continues a three-game Big Ten road swing by tangling with Northwestern on Sunday in Evans-ton, Ill. Tip-off between the Huskers (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten) and the Wildcats (8-9, 1-2 Big Ten) at Evanston Township High School is set for 2 p.m. Nebraska enjoyed the mid-week off after working its way to an impressive 79-74 road win at Minnesota on New Year’s Eve. The Huskers trailed by eight points late in the third quarter and were down by one with 30 seconds left before rallying for their fifth consecutive road win. The Big Red also handed the Golden Gophers their first home loss of the season at Williams Arena. The Huskers, who have produced three more wins (10) than last season (7), pro-vided another example of their drastically improved defense. Ne-braska held the nation’s No. 9 scoring offense 20 points below its home scoring average (94.2 ppg), including just 33 points in the second half. That effort came just three days after holding the na-tion’s No. 1 scoring offense (Ohio State) 19 points below its season average.
