MCCOOK HIGH SCHOOL 2020 GRADUATION McCook Public Schools announced yesterday that plans for the McCook High School Class of 2020 Graduation Ceremonies have been set Friday, July 31, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. held at The Graff Event Center on the Campus of McCook Community College. The MHS Post Graduation/Prom would be on Saturday, August 1st (Time = TBD) McCook Senior High/Jr High Campus. If the July plans can not be im-plemented, additional plans will be developed as appropriate. Ad-ditionally, we understand that several of our graduates have commit-ments to leave for military service training and we are working on plans to do a graduation recognition for these students prior to their leave. Please know, we understand and value the importance of this milestone for students and their families, and we will continue to do all that we can to make it a reality while prioritizing the health and safety of all involved. Mid-Plains Community College has postponed its commencement ceremonies originally scheduled for May 8 until July 31, 2020. The MCC ceremony would begin at 10 a.m.
“BEST OF SHOW” WINNER Chase County artist Gabbi Krutsinger was named “Best of Show” win-ner for the McCook Community College 2020 Paint-In Exhibition. Her oil painting “Floral” was selected among more than 300 entries in this year’s contest. Since the campus was closed because of nation-wide health concerns over Covid-19, this year’s exhibition was done virtu-ally on Facebook instead of the Wrightstone Fine Arts Gallery on campus. “This has been a difficult time for everyone and I want to congratulate all the medal winners and especially want to thank all of the talented young artists who contributed in our virtual gallery – you and your teachers have helped bring us all a beautiful distraction,” said MCC Art Instructor and Wrightstone Gallery Director Rick John-son. He said with all of this year’s directed health measures it was important to figure out a way to continue the annual Paint-In in some way. For the past 40 years the high school paint-in exhibition, as well as the in-person team paint-in competition, has promoted fine arts in area high schools, has helped artists and teachers network and has served as an important recruiting tool to find talented artists to attend MCC. Johnson judged those pieces – all submitted digitally -- on the merits of technical ability, compositional arrangement, creativity/originality, execution, effort-craftsmanship, and presentation in seven categories including: Painting, drawing, prints, mixed media, three dimensional, pottery and digital/photography.
“21 DAYS TO STAY HOME AND STAY HEALTHY” Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed April 10-30, 2020 as “21 Days to Stay Home and Stay Healthy in Nebraska” during his daily press briefing on the State’s response to the ongoing pandemic. Infectious disease experts project that the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak will be at or near its peak in Nebraska by the end of April. For the next three weeks, the Governor is urging Nebraskans to avoid non-essential errands and to limit social gatherings in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus. The Governor also announced a new state-wide Directed Health Measure (DHM) to guard against the spread of COVID-19. It orders certain businesses where six feet of social dis-tance cannot be maintained to close through April 30th. The DHM also prohibits organized group sports through May 31st.

SPORTS The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) is pleased to announce the individuals selected to the NSAA Student Advisory Committee for the 2020-21 school year. One of the selections is Wauneta-Palisade sophomore Alexa Sandman. These new mem-bers will join the 10 seniors serving their second year. Out of over 75 outstanding applicants, ten were selected to serve for their junior and senior years. These students were selected from the Nebraska’s six NSAA districts. The selection process was ex-tremely competitive and focused on the representation of gender, school classification, minority representation, and participation in interscholastic athletics/activities. This group collectively repre-sents all the NSAA sponsored activities. The Student Advisory Committee helps to promote the mission of the NSAA, encom-passin Nebraska’s spring-sport coaches are in line to have a say in whether their graduating athletes apply for waivers to return for an extra year of eligibility after this competition season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, according to NU athletic direc-tor Bill Moos. The NCAA last month approved an extra year of eligibility for athletes in spring sports, but left individual schools the power to make decisions whether their athletes apply for waivers. Some have opted not to, including the Ivy League. On Thursday, Wisconsin announced that it will not pursue waivers for student-athletes who are set to graduate before next spring, becoming the first known Power Five school to make such a deci-sion. Moos talks regularly about how he prefers to let his coaches make decisions and said NU was “starting to firm up” its plan in regard to the potential for extra eligibility.

INTERESTING FACT
There used to be a tradition churches observed that resembled the game
of "hot potato." Here, the priest would toss a hard boiled egg to one
of the choir boys. The boys would toss the egg amongst themselves and when the clock struck 12, whomever had the egg was the winner and got
to keep the egg.
