Gooseberrymarmalade shawl
Gooseberry marmalade shawl – free crochet patternHave you ever tried to eat gooseberries off the bush? They
have this tinge of acidity that makes your teeth feel funny,
but they’re also so sweet and beautifully textured.
This amazing yarn I found in Italy brought me the same
vibes, with its rich color palette and the smooth color
transitions.
The ridged texture and the crescent shape make the shawl
fit and drape softly around your shoulders, while the little
bumps in the edging add just a bit of extra playfulness to the
simple construction of the main body.
Use more or less yarn for different shawl sizes – 600 meters
for a light, summery shawlette or triangular scarf, 800-1000
meters for a full, elegant shawl that will keep your back and
arms warm on chilly evenings.
Find a big gradient cake in your stash (or make your own
with matching yarn) and start hooking.
Skill level: advanced beginner

Notions
• Yarn: Miss Tricot Filati – Caribe (600 meters) or any
cotton or cotton blend 4-ply or 3-ply ombre yarn cake
(between 600-1000 meters)
• Hook: 3 mm or hook recommended for your yarn
• Tapestry needle

Stitch abbreviations (in alphabetical order)
• Ch - chain
• Dc - double crochet
• FpDc – front post double crochet – insert hook behind
post of Dc below, not the top of the St, work Dc as usual
• MR - magic ring
• Pc – popcorn stitch – Ch3, 4Dc in same St, drop the loop,
insert hook through top Ch from the initial Ch3, pull the
dropped loop through
• Sc - single crochet
• Sk - skip stitch
• St - stitch
• Yo - yarn-over
VERY IMPORTANT OBSERVATIONS
• To make the long side of the shawl drape better, instead
of the Ch3 or Dc on the long side, add one more chain (so
Ch4) or make an extended Dc
• Ch3 (or Ch4) at the beginning of all rows counts as Dc
• Make one Dc in each stitch: make one Dc around Ch in
Ch1 spaces
• Stitches in square brackets [...] are all worked in one stitch
• Numbers in round brackets (x) show the number of
stitches per row after finishing the row
The gauge is not essential for this shawl, but do try to keep
the tension even throughout. When using 600 m of yarn, the
shawl should measure around 140 cm in width and 40 cm in
depth. More yarn will make the shawl longer and wider.
Start with a magic ring and work back and forth. The
crescent will grow with 8 stitches on each row.
If you prefer working from charts, check out page 4, there is
a chart with the beginning of the shawl and the repeat
sequence. On page 5 you will find the chart for the border
and the legend of crochet stitches.

Border pattern (optional)
Ch4 (counts as Edc), *Ch2, Pc, SlSt into the top of the Ch2,
Ch2, Sk2, 2Dc* repeat until the other end of the shawl, with a
single Dc at the end. Matching the middle with a popcorn is
not essential, but it looks better if you do (you will have to
Sk1 in the middle of the row, instead of Sk2).
Bind off and weave in ends. Wash and block the shawl into a
crescent shape. There’s no need to stretch the stitches, just
follow the natural curve of the shawl.
