POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER TO OUR LADY, HEALTH OF THE SICK TO IMPLORE HER PROTECTION DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey
as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.
At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus‟ pain,
with steadfast faith.
You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need.
We are certain that you will provide, so that,
as you did at Cana of Galilee,
joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform ourselves to the Father‟s will
and to do what Jesus tells us:
He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to
bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.
Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us
from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

STATEMENT OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO
ON THE SUSPENSION OF PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS
Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, mandated the suspen-
sion until further notice of all liturgical services effective Saturday, March
14 with the regularly scheduled weekend services. In addition, he has
mandated the closing of schools operated by the archdiocese, and to
close the Pastoral Center and related agency offices until further notice.
―This was not a decision I made lightly,‖ said Cardinal Cupich. ―The Eucha-
rist is the source and summit of our life as Catholics. And our schools and
agencies provide essential services to many thousands across Cook and
Lake Counties. But, in consultation with leaders from across the archdio-
cese, for the sake of the safety of our students, parishioners, and all the
women and men who serve the people of the archdiocese, it is clear that
we must take the better part of caution in order to slow the spread of this
pandemic.‖
The following clarification is in response to questions we have received.
Clarification: In light of the Cardinal‘s decision to suspend the celebration
of all public liturgies, it is understood that all Catholics within the Archdio-
cese of Chicago are dispensed from the obligation of attending Mass on
Sundays and holy days of obligation (per canons 85 and 87 in the code of
canon law of 1983).

WHERE DO I FIND RELIABLE SOURCES OF INFORMATION ABOUT COVID-19?
News reports about the new coronavirus have flooded your social media feeds and your TVs, and the
numbers and headlines seem to be changing every hour.
It can be scary and confusing, even when coming from trustworthy mainstream media reports.
But there also are national and local public resources available online where you can keep track of
the latest COVID-19 advice and reports for yourself, whether you‘re trying to plan travel, inform your
relatives or just get through the day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a trustworthy public source:
www.cdc.gov
The CDC updates its website regularly, using clear language to give you the latest information known
by public health experts. Here are a few key pages:
What to do when you think you have COVID-19
The known symptoms of COVID-19
Common questions about coronavirus answered
How to prevent illness
A summary of the situation
The latest U.S. cases
In addition, states update their own public health pages that have more local data and guidance.

If you have a cough and fever or have been in contact with someone who has contracted COVID-19,
you should stay home and call ahead to your doctor.

Please Note: In conjunction with Archdiocese measures to prevent spread of communicable disease,
blood pressure readings will be suspended until infection control restrictions are lifted. Thank you for

“Lent is a new beginning, a path
leading to the certain goal of
Easter, Christ‟s victory over death.
This season urgently calls us to
conversion. Christians are asked
to return to God „with all their
hearts‟ (Joel 2:12), to refuse to
settle for mediocrity and grow in
friendship with the Lord.”

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 22, 2020
GOSPEL READING: John 9:1-41
Jesus heals the man born blind
and reveals himself to him as the
Son of Man.
BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL READING
When infants are baptized, par-
ents, with the help of the godpar-
ents, assume responsibility for
raising the child as a follower of
Jesus. The process of maturation
in the faith is much like the exam-
ple found in the story of the man
born blind. The man is cured of his
blindness, a symbol of his sin.
Each time he meets someone after
the healing, the man comes to a
deeper awareness of who Jesus is.
In a similar way, we who are bap-
tized continue to mature in faith as
our relationship with and knowl-
edge about Jesus grows.
Invite each member of your family
to draw a timeline of his or her life.
On the timelines, ask family mem-
bers to identify significant mo-
ments in their lives, especially
their life of faith. Invite each per-
son to reflect upon who Jesus was
to him or her at each significant
moment. How has each person‘s
relationship with Jesus changed or
matured? Then read together to-
day‘s Gospel, John 9:1-41. Note
how the relationship between Je-
sus and the man born blind
changes and grows throughout the
Gospel. Pray together that your
relationship with Jesus will con-
tinue to grow and develop, becom-
ing ever deeper. Conclude by pray-
ing together the Lord‘s Prayer.

8 M a r c h 2 2 , 2 0 2 0 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Gospel 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT ♦ Gospel John 9:1-41
As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, ―Rabbi, who sinned, this man
or his parents, that he was born blind?‖ Jesus answered, ―Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that
the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me
while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the
world.‖When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay
on his eyes, and said to him, ―Go wash in the Pool of Siloam‖— which means Sent — So he went and
washed, and came back able to see.
His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, ―Isn‘t this the one who used to sit and
beg?‖ Some said, ―It is, ―but others said, ―No, he just looks like him.‖ He said, ―I am.‖ So they said to him,
―How were your eyes opened?‖ He replied, ―The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and
told me, ‗Go to Siloam and wash. ―So I went there and washed and was able to see.‖ And they said to
him, ―Where is he?‖ He said, ―I don‘t know.‖
They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes
on a sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, ―He put
clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.‖ So some of the Pharisees said, ―This man is not from
God, because he does not keep the sabbath.‖ But others said, ―How can a sinful man do such signs?‖ And
there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man again, ―What do you have to say about
him, since he opened your eyes?‖ He said, ―He is a prophet.‖
Now the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the par-
ents of the one who had gained his sight. They asked them, ―Is this your son, who you say was born blind?
How does he now see?‖ His parents answered and said, ―We know that this is our son and that he was
born blind. We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is of
age; he can speak for himself.‖ His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews
had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the Christ, he would be expelled from the syna-
gogue. For this reason his parents said, ―He is of age; question him.‖
So a second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, ―Give God the praise! We
know that this man is a sinner.‖ He replied, ―If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I
was blind and now I see.‖ So they said to him, ―What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?‖ He
answered them, ―I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again?
Do you want to become his disciples, too?‖ They ridiculed him and said, ―You are that man‘s disciple; we
are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from.‖
The man answered and said to them, ―This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from,
yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his
will, he listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this
man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.‖ They answered and said to him, ―You were
born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?‖ Then they threw him out.
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of
Man?‖ He answered and said, ―Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?‖ Jesus said to him, ―You have
seen him, the one speaking with you is he.‖ He said, ―I do believe, Lord,‖ and he worshiped him. Then Je-
sus said, ―I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do
see might become blind.‖ Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, ―Surely
we are not also blind, are we?‖ Jesus said to them, ―If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you
are saying, ‗We see,‘ so your sin remains.
