First Sunday of Lent Primer Domingo de Cuaresma

My dear parishioners, After a long day of driving to Wadowice and back to the retreat house, I gave my presentation that evening on St. John Paul II and Divine Mercy. The following day, we celebrated Mass at the retreat house, went for a hike a bit up a mountain to visit a hermitage, spent the rest of the day in prayer and ended with our final presentation. On Sunday, January 26, we departed the retreat house to drive to the city of Krakow. Just outside the city are two large shrines, one to Divine Mercy and another to St. John Paul II. We arrived earlier than expected and we able to celebrate our Mass in the convent chapel of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy where St. Faustina Kowalska is buried. An-other blessing to celebrate Mass in a holy place where the Lord revealed himself to St. Faustina and asked to promul-gate the message of Divine Mercy. Outside the chapel, you can see St. Faustina’s cell, which is marked outside its win-dow with bunting and flowers. Across from the chapel is the huge and modern International Shrine Church of Divine Mercy. After visiting the shrine grounds a bit, we prayed the rosary on the property together and then we had lunch. We then drove a short distance to the Be Not Afraid Center/Shrine of St. John Paul II. The church and sites were not open to us when we visited in 2016 for World Youth Day, so it was a real treat to be able to visit this magnificent place that recalls the life of St. John Paul. In the lower church, there are many side chapels, dedicated to many Polish saints, many of whom were canonized by St. John Paul. The main chapel of the lower church, had many beautiful murals of St. John Paul and images of Mary from places he had visited. One of the chapels had the original slab that was placed on his tomb in St. Peter’s when he first died. In the upper church, as I mentioned in my homily last week, was the white cassock he was wearing when he was shot on May 13, 1981. That was a particularly emotional moment for me. It was amazing to see the blood stains and the bullet hole in the cassock. It brought back the reality of how he almost died that day. We then visited a museum that showed a lot of me-mentos from his time as pope.

I had suggested to my friends that we go back to the chapel with St. Faustina’s tomb for the chaplet of Divine Mer-cy at 3 pm. We arrived at 2:30, so we agreed to do a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament and then join with the sisters at 3 for the chaplet. They had a projection screen which they used for several Polish songs before the chaplet. At 3 pm, the chapel was full as the sisters led us in the recita-tion of the chaplet. They said the first decade in Polish, then English, Spanish, French and I think Polish again. It was a wonderful experience to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy where St. Faustina would have prayed it, before our Eucha-ristic Lord.

Afterwards, we checked into our hotel in Krakow, went out to dinner and then visited the Old City of Krakow, which was still decorated for Christmas. We also visited some of the other historic churches nearby.

Mis queridos feligreses, Después de un largo día manejando hacia Wasowice y de regreso a la casa de retiro, di mi presentación esa tarde acerca de San Juan Pablo II y la Divina Misericordia. Al día siguiente, celebramos Misa en la casa de retiro, fuimos en una caminata y subimos un poco una montaña para visitar una ermita, pasamos el resto del día en oración y terminamos con nuestra presentación final. El domingo 26 de enero, salimos de la casa de retiro para manejar a la ciudad de Cracovia. Justamente en las afueras de la ciudad hay dos grandes santuarios, uno a la Divina Misericordia y otro a San Juan Pablo II. Llegamos más temprano de lo que esperábamos y nos fue posible celebrar nuestra Misa en el convento de la capilla de las Hermanas de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia donde Santa Faustina Kowalska está sepultada. Otra bendición de celebrar Misa en un sitio santo donde el Señor se reveló a Santa Faustina y le pidió promover el mensaje de la Divina Misericordia. Afuera de la capilla, uno puede ver la celda de Santa Faustina, la cual está marcada en la ventana con plantas y flores. Frente a la capilla está la gran y moderna Iglesia del Santuario Internacional de la Divina Misericordia. Después de visitar los jardines del santuario por un rato, oramos juntos el rosario en la propiedad y fuimos a almorzar. Después manejamos una corta distancia hacia el Centro/Santuario de San Juan Pablo II No Tengan Miedo. La iglesia y sitios no estaban abiertos cuando visitamos en 2016 para la Jorna-da Mundial Juvenil, así que realmente fue muy bueno poder visi-tar este magnífico lugar que recuerda la vida de San Juan Pablo. En la iglesia del sótano, hay varias capillas pequeñas, dedicadas a muchos santos Polacos, muchos de ellos fueron canonizados por San Juan Pablo. La capilla principal en el sótano, tiene muchos murales bellos de San Juan Pablo e imagines de María de lugares que el había visitado. Una de las capillas tenia la piedra original que se puso en su tumba en San Pedro cuando primero murió. En la iglesia superior, como mencione en mi homilía de la semana pasada, estaba la sotana blanca que el estaba usando cuando le disparo el 13 de mayo, 1981. Ese fue un momento especialmente conmovedor para mi. Fue increíble ver las manchas de sangre y el hueco de la bala en la sotana. Me recordó la realidad de cómo casi fallece ese día. Después visitamos un museo que mostró muchos de los recuerdos de su tiempo como papa. Yo les había sugerido a mis amigos que regresáramos a la capilla con la tumba de Santa Faustina para la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia a las 3 pm. Llegamos a las 2:30 pm, así que estuvimos de acuerdo en hacer una hora santa ante el Santísimo Sacramento y después unirnos a las hermanas a las 3 para la coro-nilla. Ellos tenían un proyector el cual usan para varios cantos Polacos antes de la coronilla. A las 3 pm, la capilla estaba llena en lo que las hermanas nos guiaban rezando la coronilla. Ellas reza-ron la primera década en Polaco, después en inglés, español, fran-cés y creo que en Polaco otra vez. Fue una experiencia maravillosa rezar la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia donde Santa Faustina la habría rezado, ante Nuestro Señor en la Eucaristía. Después, nos registramos en el hotel en Cracovia, fui-mos a cenar y después visitamos la Ciudad Vieja de Cracovia, la cual estaba todavía decorada para la Navidad. The office of religious education is thinking about summer. Even when

the warmer temperatures are something to look forward to, we are

actually looking ahead to our Summer Bible Camp. For two years we

had the blessing to prepare a summer experience for the children at St. Mary’s, this summer will not be the exception. This experience is only

possible thanks to the volunteers who faithfully commit to collaborate.

Today we want to make an invitation to all those parishioners who are

12 years old and over, and would like to collaborate with our summer

bible camp. For more information on how to volunteer, please feel free to contact the office of religious education by email

Lenten Regulations

Once again, the celebration of Christ's Passion and Resurrection draws

near. In our preparation for Easter, the Church invites us to observe the

penitential and grace-filled season of Lent which commences on Febru-

ary 26, 2020 with the observance of Ash Wednesday. Lent is a time of

renewal for the entire Catholic community. It is also a time of spiritual accompaniment as we assist the catechumens and candidates who will

be welcomed into communion with the Church during the Easter Sea-

son. In order to assist the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to take

full advantage of the Lenten season, our Bishop, Most Reverend Nich-

olas DiMarzio wishes to draw attention to the following:

Abstinence - All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are

required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fri-

days of Lent.

Fasting - All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are

bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice in-

volves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions dur-

ing the day.

Easter Duty- After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucha-

rist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Com-

munion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of

the year. By special indult, in the United States, the period for fulfilling

this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First

Sunday of Lent (March 1, 2020) to the celebration of Pentecost (May

31, 2020).

The Solemnity of Saint Joseph: The solemnity of Saint Joseph should

be observed with proper solemnity even though it falls within the sea-

son of Lent.

Una vez más se acerca, la celebración de la Pasión y Resurrección de Cristo. En nuestra preparación para la Pascua, la Iglesia nos

invita a observar la época penitencial llena de gracia de la Cuares-ma que comienza el 26 de febrero, 2020 con el Miércoles de Ceni-

za. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación para toda la comu-nidad católica. Es además un tiempo de acompañamiento espiri-

tual mientras apoyamos a los catecúmenos y candidatos quienes

serán recibidos en comunión con la Iglesia durante la época de la Pascua. Para ayudar a los feligreses de la Diócesis de Brooklyn a

aprovechar al máximo la época de la Cuaresma, nuestro Obispo, Su Excelencia Reverendo Nicholas DiMarzio desea atraer aten-

ción a lo siguiente:

Abstinencia – A todos los feligreses entre las edades de 18 a 59

años se les requiere abstenerse totalmente de comer carne el Miér-

coles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de la Cuaresma.

Ayuno – Todos los feligreses entre las edades de 18 a 59 años

inclusive están obligados a ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el

Viernes Santo. Esta práctica se limita a una sola comida y evitar comer entre comidas. Sostenimiento liviano se puede comer en

dos ocasiones diferentes durante el día.

Deber de la Pascua – Después de haber sido iniciados en la Sagra-

da Eucaristía, todos los feligreses están obligados a recibir la Sa-

grada Comunión por lo menos una vez al año. Este precepto debe ser cumplido durante la época de la Pascua, a no ser que por una

La Solemnidad de San José – La solemnidad de San José debe ser

PARENTS! Here’s what’s going on at our Youth Night this weekend!

PARALLEL UNIVERSE: a night on GRACE Do we fully understand God’s grace? During the Mass, we hear the word “grace” quite frequently. We may talk about needing God’s grace. We may even know, or remember hearing, that the sacraments are outward expressions of God’s grace. Simp-ly put, grace is God’s life within us. Grace is God’s favor and help toward us and is given to us because of God’s love for us. When we receive grace, we not only participate in God’s life, but are also transformed (CCC 1996-1997). Grace allows us to become adoptive sons and daughters of God. This makes a difference in our lives because the gift of God’s life within us helps heal our soul from sin, make us holy, and prepare our soul to enter God’s presence in heaven (CCC 1999). While grace is open to everyone, we need to choose to receive it. God freely gives grace, but we must freely respond to it. Sac-ramental grace is encountered through the sacraments. When we receive the Eucharist, there is a particular grace we receive. Mass is a profound place to encounter God’s grace. It is a place in which we are challenged to “look harder,” realizing that God draws near to us and gives us His very life within us every moment of every day. That is grace! CONVERSATION STARTERS 1. In what specific ways is God currently present in our family life? 2. How can God’s presence — God’s grace — transform our hearts? 3. Did we go to Mass this past week? Why or why not? What else can we do to make Mass a priority in our lives?

¡PADRES DE FAMILIA! ¡Esto es lo que pasará en la Noche Juvenil este fin de semana! UNIVERSO PARALELO: una noche de gracia

De manera sencilla, la gracia es la vida de Dios en nosotros. La gracia es el favor y el auxilio que nos viene de Dios y se nos da por el amor que Dios tiene por nosotros. Cuando recibimos la gracia no solo participamos de la vida de Dios, sino que tam-bién esta gracia nos transforma (CIC 1996-1997). La gracia es lo que nos permite ser hijos e hijas adoptivos de Dios. Esto marca la diferencia en nuestras vidas, pues el rega-lo de la vida de Dios en nosotros nos ayuda a sanar del peca-do, a ser santos y a preparar nuestras almas para entrar a la presencia de Dios en el cielo (CIC 1999). Aunque la gracia está abierta para todos, necesitamos escoger recibirla. Dios nos da la gracia libremente, pero debemos res-ponder a ésta también libremente. La gracia sacramental se recibe a través de los sacramentos. Cuando recibimos la Euca-ristía hay una gracia especifica que recibimos. La Misa es un lugar reservado para encontrar la gracia de Dios. Es un lugar donde se nos reta a “a mirar fuertemente” dándonos cuenta de que, no solo Dios se acerca a nosotros, sino que Su propia vida misma reside en nosotros a todo momento. ¡Eso es la gracia!

St. Benedict Founded Western Monasticism

Soon after the fall of the Roman Empire, Benedict of Nursia created his monumental Rule in 529, the first real guidebook to institutionalize monastic life. Convert-ing a pagan temple into a Christian monastery in Nursia, Benedict gathered together two brothers who wanted to live a common, Christocentric life. Benedict’s Rule was groundbreaking in that it fostered prudence and human-ity, providing both spiritual and administrative guid-ance.

faithfully execute the admonitions of thy loving Father, that by the toil of obedience thou mayest return to Him

from whom by the sloth of disobedience thou hast gone away.”

Muy pronto después de la caída del Imperio Romano, Benedicto de Nursia creó su monumental Regla en el año 529, las primeras guías a seguir para institucionalizar la vida monástica. Convirtiendo un templo pagano en un monasterio Cristiano en Nursia, Benedicto reunió a dos hermanos que querían vivir en comunidad y llevar una vida centrada en Cristo. La Regla de Benedicto fue inno-vadora en lo que adoptó prudencia y humanidad, propor-cionando guía espiritual y administrativa.
