Thank you for visiting the rectory last weekend, and seeing my “Polish Christ-mas Tree” I hope you join us this Tuesday, December 15th

for our Advent reflection, at 7 p.m. in the church. This time we will have two speakers coming to us from the Newman Center at UIC, and talking to us about “Emmanuel, Prince of Peace.” Fr. Michal is a friend of mine. We were at the seminary together and studied Spanish together at Middlebury Collage in Vermont.

Fr. Michal Lewon was born in Poland in 1981 and spent almost half of his life in the United States. He was educated in both the U.S. and Poland and was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Chi-cago in 2008. Fr. Michal has been assigned as a parish priest serv-ing the parish communities in Riverside, Chicago Heights, and Mt. Greenwood. Fr. Michal currently works at the Newman Center at UIC and he is involved with the School of Catholic Thought helping to organize the programs for students to grow in their faith through intellectual knowledge of the Church’s teachings by studying doctrine and the

lives of the Saints. He has an interest in the Ignatius, Franciscan and monastic spiritual-ties. Ecumenism and Interreligious dialogues are very important to him. In 2013 he spent a few months with the Custody of the Holy Land living in different Franciscan monasteries.

Sister Diane Marie Collins, OSF is a Franciscan Sister of Chicago. Sister was born in Chicago, IL. Sister obtained her B.A. in English from Marillac College in St. Louis, an M.A. in English from DePaul University in Chicago and an MSW from Loyola Univer-sity in Chicago. Sister Diane Marie ministered at Madonna High School as teacher and school social worker. She served her com-munity as vocation/formation director as well as in congregational leadership. Sister enjoys music, playing the guitar, reading myster-ies and discovering the uniqueness of each person she encounters.

Father Karol formally welcomed several new Parishioners at 5pm and 10 am Mass last weekend. The Welcome presentation, sponsored by the St. John Fellowship group, honored those who have become registered members of St. John Parish. As the Welcome invitation which was sent to these new parishioners stated: “Since its beginning in 1897, we at St. John have been greatly blessed and would love to share our best wishes and a bit of that spirit with you.” As each invitee responds to the invitation, a “Welcome Bag” is specifically prepared for that person. It is filled with the following gifts which are meant to convey a warm welcome and meaningful symbolism; Crucifix-that you remember the greatest gift you ever received. Chocolate-that you will always be a child in God’s Eyes. Bible-that you acquire a deeper meaning of Jesus Christ. Bread–that you may never know hunger. Holy Water-that you remember your Baptism commitments. Candle-that Jesus will always be a light in your home. Wine-that joy and prosperity may reign forever. New parishioners include: Bertha Hernandez, Glenda Levon & Maria Meraz & family.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week, our celebration of Advent makes a transition in ritual and texts. Beginning December 18, the countdown of nine days (a novena) to Christmas sees a heightened sense of expectation, and also a turning from the call of the Baptist in the wilderness to the events leading up to Jesus’ birth. In ancient Spain, Decem-ber 18 was once celebrated as the “Feast of the Expectancy,” and customs grew up to heighten readiness in the homes. Some customs arise from monastic life and practice and spill over into our parish life. Beginning tonight, those who pray Vespers will sing in the opening phrase a beautiful title of Christ. These titles belong to a col-lection of opening phrases called the “O Antiphons” after the awe-inspired “O” sung on the first note. There’s a playful code in the titles: O Wisdom, O Lord, O Flower of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dawn, O Ruler, O Em-manuel. When you take their Latin names—Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, and so on—the titles form an acrostic when you read them backwards: “ERO CRAS.” In Latin, that is translated as “I will be there tomorrow!” It’s as if Christ were answering the prayers of the waiting people in the words of the prayers themselves. —Rev. May the God of peace make us completely holy. May God keep us blameless in spirit, soul and body

for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Forever faithful is the One who calls us—

God our Father! Expectant, let us live in joyful hope for the revelation of the glory

of our God and Savior, Christ Jesus! To him be glory forever!
