Prelude The Gift of Love Traditional/arr. Shackley Welcome

Introit

You walk along our shoreline where land meets unknown sea. We hear your voice of power, “Now come and follow me. And if you still will follow through storm and wave and shoal, then I will make you fishers but of the human soul.” (hymn 170)

*Call to Worship

In the sanctuary, the Holy One calls us. Along ordinary paths, in our daily work, God calls us. Let us respond with our whole heart, singing God’s praise and giving thanks. With grateful devotion, let us worship almighty God.

*Hymn 395 Blessed Jesus, at Your Word

*Invitation to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

(silent confession) Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our failure to be what you created and called us to be. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Forgive us, we pray. By your loving mercy, help us to live in your light and abide in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

*Assurance of Forgiveness

*The Peace of Christ

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

O brethren, ain’t you happy, ye followers of the Lamb. Sing on, dance on, followers of Emmanuel; Sing on, dance on, ye followers of the Lamb.

O sisters, ain’t you happy, ye followers of the Lamb...

O I’m glad I am a Christian, ye followers of the Lamb...

O I mean to be obedient, ye followers of the Lamb...

Scripture Reading Luke 5:1-11 Sermon “Tina’s Eyes Glow in the Dark” Sharon Youngs *Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed (traditional)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Prayer (hymn 822, verse 3)

‘Mid times of sorrow and in times of pain, When sensing beauty or in love’s embrace, Whether we suffer, or sing rejoicing, We belong to God; we belong to God.

worship notes While there is technically no “season” of Epiphany, we continue with symbols of Epiphany (the star on the front of the bulletin and the Moravian star in the narthex) until the beginning of Lent on March 6 (Ash Wednesday). Until then, these Sundays are known simply as Ordinary Time. The liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green.

Our anthem today is Phil Dietterich's arrangement of a Shaker tune transcribed in 1840. Shaker villages resounded with passionate and often beautiful song, many songs written as dance tunes. Shaker worship included a strong component of dancing and foot-tapping in songs and reveal the gentle and deeply spiritual nature of their worship and worldview. Music is the surest way to see what drives a culture, and Shaker songs depict a people whose beliefs were the heartbeat in their bodies.
