“By Golly!”by Bobbie MaysDirector of Communications

The letter was dated July 25, 2015. It was from Stockton, CA addressed to Pastor, First Methodist Church, 200 So. Church St. Jackson, TN. It began:

“Good morning: I sure hope this letter brightens your day! I was at an antique shop here and found these two old circa 1915 picture cards of your beautiful church. They are old time classics for sure. I thought to myself, By golly, I think I’ll send them home where they can be appreciated.”

He went on to say how our heritage is important to us all. “Lots of changes, too... I gave $8 for the two postcards (pictured). If you want them for $10 or $11 or so, why that’s ok. Throw in a little postage if you want, too. My wife says if I hear from you I will have to take her to lunch. I am eighty-seven years old and still going strong.”

He concluded with this message:

“I like to call my little hobby a “re-distribution of happiness….our world sure needs it. PS: Send along about your place today if you want, too. I enjoy souvenirs. I got your address off the net. Thank you and Godspeed in our work.” -Lowell Joerg

Pastor Dan and I responded with a note of thanks, a little donation, a recent newsletter and an FUMC tote bag. He was also given assurance the postcards would be added to the church historical preservation archive.

No one could ever have dreamed that these two postcards, one of which was mailed to Mrs. W. W. Wright in Orlando, FL and the other to Mrs. E. McAdams in Macon, GA would have made it from one coast to the other and back to Jackson FUMC… 100 years later!

By golly… what an amazing and unexpected piece of mail! PS: Mr. Joerg is committed to taking his wife to lunch now!
